Its so nice to see/hear someone do a demo "normal' video with just simple chords at first with a/b between the 2 different pickups. way better than someone actually trying to show how many notes they can play in 2-3 seconds. excellent demo video . thanks so much
Thanks for appreciating that! It has always been a pet peeve of mine when onion demos a guitar with tons of saturation that you can't tell the tone of the guitar itself! Merry Christmas!
@@guitarguitarsguitars1711 Keep in mind that this is the "plus" set - they aren't supposed to emulate single coils like the Gatton set. They are supposed to sound more midrange. Thanks for listening!
@@guitarguitarsguitars1711 Yup I made the same mistake when i put my barden in also. Tele tone gone hahaha, i fixed it pretty quick when plugged it in and heard that hahaha
THANK YOU so much for demonstrating the tone right out of the gate with strummed chords. I hate when the "lightning boys" do a demo and play so fast that I really can't get a feel for what I'm hearing. I love the JBE. Thanks again. Kevin O'Rourke
The JBE's are very sensitive to height adjustments. I almost sold mine because I didn't like the sound until I got to messing with it and got it dialed in perfectly. Now it's my favorite set of pickups. They can really do it all.
Thank you for the informative comparison. In other videos I liked the Danny Gatton JB pickups which preserve the Tele character. For my personal taste the JB pickups (presented in this video) destroy this traditional Tele sound character. A Tele is not a Les Paul - therefore I prefer Tele pups being bright and sparkling.
I gotta say I love Joe Barden pickups and those are great sounding, but I gotta say the stock pickups pretty spanktacular to. Good luck with both sets because both are great. Great video👍
i prefer the sound of the fender pickups because i like the highs. do you think boosting EQ on the JBE's could get them close? i am playing direct and just looking to reduce hum
Really nice comparison! Where the text says “parallel” for the pickup/switch position, I believe you mean ‘series’. A standard Tele 3-way switch is parallel in the middle setting, and the 4-way switch adds a series config. Thanks for the great video!
The stock pickups actually sound a little better. I'm a telicaster guy. I think Barden pickups sound great in teli's, but for some reason they just don't hit the spot in that guitar, maybe they need to come up a little.
Ken, you are so right. After I did this video I raised them just a bit, about 1/32 and you can't believe how different they sounded! Thanks for listening!
Enjoyed your last video on Acoustics and been contemplating a Telecaster Build and your Pick up review and comparison was what I was thinking myself, JBE were creamier but still doing more research for the Dream Tele build
I like the standard Telecaster bridge. It's very clear. The Barden neck could be awesome with a stock Bridge pickup. The stock Bridge would even them out. And if you want alot of gain you could flip to the neck pickup or both to cancel hum and get extra low end. I love soloing on a neck pickup with a bunch of gain. Or use the neck for rhythm with gain and add the bridge for solos when feedback dosnt get in the way as much. More low end and no hum neck with a standard Telecaster bridge could be an awesome combo. Especially using that neck pickup for jazz
Thanks for the demo and what a beautiful guitar! I would think- lighter guitars need hotter pickups to achieve the same fullness- btw that 4th position is series neck/middle rather than parallel- cheers!
Whoops, sorry about that! And I agree with you in that if those original pickups were in a standard Tele, they might sound fine, but in a Thinline body, they were way too banjo like for me. Thank you for checking out the video. All the best!
You sure you grounded those things properly? The JBE bridge has a ton of hum coming out of it at 2:57. The single coil bridges was way less noisy in the video 😂
I also have Joe Barden pickups on my Tele and it sounds completly different then here. It sounds like the tone knob is roled down when he playes the Joe barden pickup.
Thanks for the demo, nice job. Honestly, I don't get the appeal of Barden p/u's. I had a set put on my Strat back in the 80's and it came back from the shop DOA...I was shocked at how sterile they sounded, so... I've stuck with single coils ever since. The Josephinas sound great b/t/w...never heard those before. Very cool.
I actually liked the stock better. I find many vintage teles and stats sound thinner than modern instruments. I would just use a pedal to fatten the tone when needed. You just painted over a Rimbrandt to look like a Picasso because you prefer the look of a Picasso when you already own a Picasso. Love your channel, just stumbled across it.
Hi and thanks for checking out my channel... theoretically, I agree with you but I wanted the guitar to be usable for what I do. If I didn't change the pups, I'd sell it. Also, since the video, I've tweaked the pickup height and it sounds much better. Thanks again and happy new year
The JB sounds like a blanket is over the guitar amp. Also the JB are not aesthetically pleasing as you said earlier at least for me. Otherwise I’m sure that they’re high quality...
It would be great to get rid of the 60hz hum but, with those JBE humbuckers, you've completely changed the sound of your guitar. Evidently you didn't want your tele to sound like a tele anymore, but hey, everything is subjective. If you like, you like it. Cheers!
Thanks for watching. They did sound better after I adjusted the height. Also, I agree with you - the "Moderns" stink, but the regular JBE sound more Tele like
To me the Barden pickups sound just like humbuckers ... with the double rail construction I guess that is what they are! If I want humbucker sound I will buy a Gibson! The Telecaster has its own sound and to tell the truth, I like it better than most Gibsons!
Keep in mind that this is the "plus" set - they aren't supposed to emulate single coils like the Gatton set. They are supposed to sound more midrange. Thanks for listening!
Great video. One small thing: When you have PU selector in fourth position the title says “Stock parallel.” Is this supposed to be “in series.” Or maybe this selector is not the one I’m familiar with.
Thanks, great comparison. I'm thinking about changing out the Pups in my Richie Kotzen Tele and was looking at both the Barden Modern and the Josefina pickups.
I would depend on the style of music you are doing and the tone you are looking for... the Bardens are great, but you really have to take some time to adjust them... the Jospehinas are primarily vintage sounding - enjoy the hunt
Excellent point! I love most every pickup Fralin has ever produced... and while this may sound superficial, I am not crazy about the look of the split blades but that's not a big deal
@@guitarguitarsguitars1711 thanks. I'm asking for a comparison because I have a semi hollow g&l that feeds back. I'm hoping you noticed less feedback with the bardens than the original single coils.
@@guitarguitarsguitars1711 i installed the modern t pickups tonight. Almost no feedback! The bardens have three different ways in which they are grounded. I expect that has something to do with their stability under high gain and volume.
@@mdallen5 I hope you like them. When I first installed the Modern Bridge pickup in my Thinline, I didn't care for it... then all I did was lower it about 1/32nd from where I had it and I liked it much better!
I definitely like the JBE neck pup - sounds exactly like I'd want a rhythm pickup to sound. However, I think I like the thinner sound of the original bridge ... a bit more of that Tele twang. Very curious to hear that combo - if the soldering iron is still hot ... :-) Take this with a grain of salt from a guy who's never owned a tele.
Thanks for listening! I am in agreement with you that the original bridge had more of a classic Tele sound, but it was real thin sounding in light of the fact it was in a Thinline body. The new bridge is almost too humbuckery for me, but I may be able to solve that with a height adjustment. Thanks again
The Barden's are too dark. Did you account for the pots and caps? The Josephina"s are way better for their purpose. the Thinline was not meant to be "meaty". use a Fender DR or Twin R mic'd for a true comparison. Or just get a Les Paul if you want hot output
Did you purchase this ThinLine originally from Wildwood ? I saw Greg Koch play a vey similar one. Missed it... To my ear the original PU's are perfect !! Shouldn't change them at all.
Guitar, Guitars, Guitars Aaah… I knew it !! Since I missed it, I ordered a rounded '59 neck .(87 to .97) that I mounted on my Thinline. I have a couple of SD SH-2's pickups with a coil-tap that sound awesome: best of both worlds ! Cheers from France
I treat my guitar like a tool, not like an untouchable work of art. If I think I might be able to improve it's performance , I make that change. I didn't destroy the Mona Lisa, I made the guitar do it's job better in my opinion. Love traditional tele pickups but in some situations the Bardens do a better job.
Can't compare the tone of two type of pickups as performed on this video. Once you see a Telecaster Fender guitar, your imagination should hear a sound of its unique sound that been playing more than half of century. Thicker sound doesn't mean we can have a better sound. I would install JBE pickups on other guitar body instead. The JBE pickups on this Telecaster can not handle any type of country music or some type of other music style if we consider seriously .
Send the too expensive burdens back and get you money back. Your guitar sounds fine man. Guys quit fallin for all this gear hype and turn the knobs on your amps and guitars jeez.
