I just realized Luffy mastering gear second by focusing it to specific parts of his body instead of all throughout his body is literally the exact opposite of how Deku is mastering One For All in My Hero Academia
Luffy is a rubber person rubber so he can focus the power without worrying about them snapping his bones but deku isnt a magical rubber person... He's a magical regular person so his regular person body can only handle so much force before his bones give out meaning he has to spread out the power evenly. This comment was meaningless but i have nothing better to do
Wonko very true, and luffy doing strength training means his base strength is getting stronger. That was a big highlight of the nightmare.Luffy he was just stronger. Maybe that was a foreshadow too.
Well it probably did in FMAB when Ed used it to fused some of his soul to philosophers stone to do first aid to himself and did that again to destroy the stone in Pride. That probably did shorten his lifespan since he literally used his soul. And in FMAB, soul is the ingredient for philosophers stone.
but I'm sure that it will do it with Luffy. maybe Roger had a similar thing and that's why he was sick. and Luffy will be sick or is about dying when he finally becomes the pirate king.
N'aber youtube I mean, yah, but fma is a short form anime (64 ep) so they have more leeway in giving actual consequences without writing themselves into a hole later on.
@Goku Think of Katakuri and his awakening. Turning the ground, walls ect into mochi and using them as weapons. That's what i imagine Luffys awakening will be like minus the ability to generate rubber out of thin air.
@@janemba42 well i think he has a mild awakening since its kinda stupid that phython releases air to change direction, instead the air changes to a rubber property to change direction
@@reymichaelsungazornosa4040 That doesn't make sense though. It's called muscle balloon. He can control his stretching directly with haki or with just the muscles themselves so doing that would waste more energy and would be slower. The only thing that can be seen as an awakening is the fact that he can stretch so far now but we know it's not because he was already using that technique before he found out what awakening was. Oda isn't going to gloss over a major plot point for the main protagonist like that.
Luffy’s arm catches fire cause rubber has a property to combust under high speed, and I guess the haki makes friction or something to better this. I think
i always saw it as gear 2nd running through his arm so fast that it generates fire, and that the haki was there to protect his arm from actually being burned as well as add extra power
@@queenn2305 Yea it was confirmed to just be becuz of friction, but even then in the fight with Hody he was underwater, so it doesn't make much sense.. just "anime logic" I guess.
I freaking love the evolution of the gears....the second is about speed and precision while the third is raw power but decreases speed. Gear 4 mixes both and is clearly costly as he's utilizing so many resources.
Gear 2nd is my favorite mainly because of how it looks and the abilities is gives Luffy. Gear 4th is really cool conceptually and I love how creative Luffy has become when using it, but it just isn't aesthetically pleasing to look at. One of the things that makes Luffy's stretching look so cool is his long, lanky limbs and thin build but you lose some of that with Gear 4th. Granted, Snakeman form is a little better because the contrast between the size of his upper and lower body isn't as severe.
There's actually an interesting case in the anime that i'm somewhat sad you didn't mention, and that's its sneaky use in the One Piece movie, The Giant Mechanical Soldier of Karakuri Castle, but I can understand why since you're a manga purist. As for what happens in that movie near the end of it the big bads giant mech tries to crush Luffy, only for him to catch it, but because of the compression being put on him Gear Second activates without him even knowing, and Luffy ends up hitting him with what he believes to be a regular Bazooka, but it's actually a Jet Bazooka, and I haven't seen the movie in a while but I think he comments that something about it felt different
Luffy using gear second on only one part of his body after the time skip, its still always everytime we see throughout his entire body, but what you said about gear second not draining his life anymore is true.
"... so one-sided, it puts Mobius strip to shame..." LMAO!! Also, ( 4:23 ) while going gear 4th, Luffy bites into his arm first and then coats it with armament...
@@YonicTepz494 , hmm... I am sure he bites into it, then coats it, and then blows into it.... Bites into it first... 217.23.10.62/manga/One-Piece-Digital-Colored-Comics/0783-018.png then coats it and blows air into it... 217.23.10.62/manga/One-Piece-Digital-Colored-Comics/0784-006.png
There's a lot of talk about Luffy reducing his lifespan throughout One Piece so I have a feeling Luffy is gonna die at a very young age, I'm thinking late 30's early 40's
Some Dragon Ball comparisons: -Gear second is kinda like ssj3 Boost in attributes (though not by the same amount), but is a bitch to maintain when not fully mastered, and even then it's still decently hard to manage -Gear third kinda like kioken x20 Not spamable and drawbacks mainly come after use -Gear fouth is UI (mimus auto-dodge*) Great attack and defence, but comes with some limits and once you get out of the form, your more dead than T-series Tank man: Full Stomach = Veku Omae wa mou Shindeiru * although snake man can look in the future or something on those ends, UI's auto dodge works differently... kinda... maybe... Still less powerful than Karen when she took the kids.
I think it is pretty obvious that gear four is basically just Luffy's nightmare form from thriller bark adapted so that it can be used naturally with his Gum-Gum powers rather than extremely situationally with Moria's shadow powers. And it was a good idea on Oda's part to bring it back, too. Luffy with a huge upper body, unnaturally colored skin and demonic eyes was such a striking design that it would have been a shame for Oda to confine it to only like 10 chapters in Thriller Bark.
Love the work as always GrandLineReview! Just wanted to let you know about a small issue with what you said about gear second: It isn't about increasing his blood vessels' volume (which would actually decrease his blood pressure) but actually forcibly pumping his limbs to superhumanly increase his blood flow. The reason he can survive this is because his blood vessels are made of rubber and thus can withstand far greater blood pressure than humanly possible. Once again, I love the fact that there's a thoughtful and eloquent youtuber out here representing one piece!
0:00 "Even if I'm not that strong, I have friends that I want to be with, so I've got to be stronger than everyone, or I'll lose them. So I've thought of a way to fight with my all, so that I won't lose to anybody. You won't be able to keep up with me anymore. All of my techniqes have evolved to the next level." -Monkey D Luffy I just love this quote by luffy. This really ties into the sabody arc, where Luffy wasn't able to protect his friends, and the marinefold arc, where Luffy couldn't protect his brother, so took a 2 year hiatus to get stonger.
@@allenwright123 Joel Ap said Oda plans everything ahead of time. I tell you he did not. Keyword: Everything. Go and do your research. You will be able to find about incredible twists in which he did not plan ahead of time and just did it on the fly.
@@jaykenarn6223 He said in an SPS that he has the rest of OP "mapped out" ..idk what he means by that, but he's also said that he has the finale planned out in case of an emergency. This means he has what's happening from now to the end all planned out, not what happened from the start, he just did w/e for the start.. tho he probably had haki planned from the very start at least, cuz of that bit with Shanks.
Especially significant considering the relation the "Monster Trio" have with deities from various religions/mythologies who eventually wage ware against heaven. Luffy (must like Goku) is seemingly a Sun Wukong allegory, though that one is the most tenuous. Far easier of a connection is Zoro's connection Asura, the deity who would destroy the realm of the gods in Hindu mythology. Sanji has "Diable Jambe" - the leg of the devil. Obviously, a reference to Satan who, according to Christian mythos, will one day wage a world-ending war on heaven. It's interesting to note that Mariejois is referred to as heaven. Oda's planning and teasing via symbolism is absolutely amazing.
Why would it be named that though? Even if that was the japanese word for "Fifth" or "Five" (which it isn't), it would make no sense to change the naming pattern from the previous gears.
All Paramecia fruits have a potential awakening, as shown with the Ito Ito no Mi, maybe Gear 5th will be when Luffy awakens the Gomu Gomu no Mi, and beat the last two Yonkos, Shanks and Blackbeard. The One Piece also exists I guess. Yeah not like the entire series is named after it or anything.
@@juanthadon86 that I might be a nice way to look at it in the fantasy world. by heading search and typing in Grand line review plus whatever else isn't that hard. And the simple fact have you saying just in case they overlooked it would imply that they're not willing to go back and look again hence the lazy part. Just my opinion though. GUYS/GALS! I have an idea about the gears, I've heard of this before. You see, each gear represents one of the 4 main body systems: - 2nd gear: circulatory system - 3rd gear: skeletal system - 4th gear: muscular system So the next gear (5th gear) would represents the last main body system. Unfortunately, I don't what that system is, does anyone have an idea? -Double D
@DeltroxTv He's already immune to blunt force trama, and the only thing that could hurt him are sharp objects, which he can already counter with armament haki.
1:30 "this fight became so one sided that would put a Mobius Strip to shame." This is, hands down, the best commentary I've ever heard. Ahh, the joys of physics jokes...
My conclusion from this is basically haki is just like the gates in naruto everyone has them only a few can awaken them and luffy uses haki to awaken the gears just as might guy and rock open up their gates but it comes with punishment. So it all kind of makes sense the THE GEARS R BASICALLY OPENED GATES.
Honestly the only reason its like Kaioken is the purple skin, which is an anime thing and not a manga thing. so its more of a reference by toei to their former most popular show than it is one by Oda. One Piece does have a lot of Dragon Ball influence for sure, though.
"activation of gears do shorten his life span everytime" I'm calling it right now: Luffy will die of old age right after he became the Pirate King. (although I clearly don't wish that to happen)
@Joseph Joestar that would be worse do you really think luffy will even accept the idea of immortality at the cost of his friend dying and even realizing that he will be forever alone and undying will watching all his friends dying of old age he WILL turn insane
Since everybody knows that Luffy's fruit is really a Mythical Zoan, it has a similar number of gears to Chopper's points, Chopper has: Brain Point (hybrid), Walk Point (normal), Heavy Point (full beast) and his additional forms of: Jumping Point (Mobility), Guard Point (Big), Arm Point (Power Arms), Horn Point (another damage dealer), Kung Fu Point (Combo), and his forced awakening Monster Point(Awaken) which totals in: 9 different forms. Meanwhile, Luffy has: Gear 1st (normal), Gear 2nd (Power Arms), Gear 3rd (another Damage dealer), Gear 4th Bounce Man (Combo), Gear 4th Tank Man (Big), Gear 4th Snake Man (Mobility), and finally Gear 5th (hybrid/Awaken), there is about 8 of these. Considering the symbolism of the number 8, it's best Luffy stays at 8.
I'll never forget the day that volume came out. And i love that we didn't need a training arc to get there. It's just implied that they think about new techniques when they take a dump, and training by themselves. With a few exceptions, training arcs are a waste of time
I wonder if there's going to be a Gear 5, combining all of the previous abilities into one? Gears 2-4 in the whole body, with Gear 5 sprouting up mid-attacks? Anyone else have any ideas for 5?
If luffy's body is in layers, i got an idea What if he had a gear that makes him fly in some way? Well ig not a gear but a utility, what if he blew into his skin and purposefully put holes on his feet and flew? I know this kinda breaks the laws of physics and if it was just a singular hole on each of his feet he would turn over but i still think it could work if the holes were on another part or smthng, it would be used to save himself from the sea if he fell or something. Edit: layers of rubber
It was never stated Luffy would not be able to move after Gear 4. The only reason he let Gatz carry him was to preserve energy. He can still function and use other gears after 4th. This was from an SBS
The best guess as to why Red Hawk ignites is partially gear 2. When activated, it does increase his body temperature as it explains why a lot of smoke comes from his body. Adding that along with the amount of friction/speed the punch travels at causes it to combust into flames.
This ability shortens his life span is just a mistranslation on the anime part . When Rob lucci in the manga commented about gear 2 he meant that it's taxing your body too much since you can't handle this new power and that might shortens your life span but now he's using it effortlessly. I mean is oda nuts to give luffy a power up that's killing him.
Gear second : faster speed and attacks Gear third : bigger attaks Gear fourth: faster speed and bigger attacks , + haki Gear fifth: I don't know , i don't know what type of genius bullshit oda will do in the future
LOL he might turn into a giant man with full body haki and become smoky has hell and be crazier than gear 2nd and snake mans agility with extra arms when he fights and legs and probably flames all over his body it like red hawk and possibly Ryuo he will definitely destroy Kaido with that but it will shorten his life a ton.
What about Whitebeard and Enel? At the end of the marinefort war Whitebeard was also Steaming and glowing reddish before He tried to kill Teach which to me looked pretty much Line Gear2. Also On Skypia Enel Turned into a giant more round being with a more spiky hairstyle and a posture that resembled Gear 4 pretty much. Even though with this Form i could agree if you people say its no Gear Form. I mean Enel Himself is still a Big mystery overall
imagine if there was a gear 5 gear 5 would be like gear 4 but if he inflat his body even more he would be the same size of king Ghidorah and his power is quadrillion times stronger🤔
It doesn't look like he focuses on a single point of his body but rather notice post timeskip, Luffy uses both Gear 2nd and Gear 3rd in short bursts rather than extended usages. It seems that by doing so, he's able to undercut the drawbacks because he's not over extending his limits and endurance, thus allowing him to fight much longer at much higher rates. By using the power rapidly, but in small bursts, he gets the powers he needs for the moment, but not enough time passes to truly experience any real drawback. Now instead those drawbacks appear in Gear 4th because Luffy hasn't found a way to use that form in bursts, probably because it isn't possible so instead, like pre-time skip, prolong usages drain him much more quickly.
Fourth gear in my opinion is one of the most versatile techniques in luffys arsenal. It can take on a whole lot more different forms and bc Luffy spent two years perfecting it, Oda gave himself the opportunity to make as many fourth gear versions as he wants with a simple explanation of how Luffy is the way he is. Two years spent perfecting that form there's no telling what madness Oda came up with for Luffy. Tank man standard form seems interesting. So far we've seen Balance type with Bounce man and Speed type with snakeman. Tank man gotta be focused on pure defense. And then there's the Power type form that may or may not be in Odas plans.
For the red hawk theory you didn't know how his hands went o. Fire, the answer: speed he moved his fist so fast that it caught on fire and the haki protects his arm
