Marcus Fenix saved this game, honestly. It would have still been pretty good even without him, but it really was the right move to have him in throughout the whole game.
When you've been through what he has, not just from the war (and that's not even counting just the games, the comics, the books etc) and the aftermath, you'd probably feel the same. Fits who he is perfectly.
I really like Old Man Marcus. It’s clear he’s haunted by past ghosts and disappointed his son is living a life he never wanted him to. If you watch the Gears 4 trailer it looked like Marcus and his family were set to live peacefully and close together but it seems that Anya’s passing really fractured him and his son’s relationship. I have something similar in my life so I know how it is. The thing is, that’s exactly how Marcus’ relationship was with his own dad, Adam Fenix. Their relationship was also strained because Adam hid the reason behind Marcus’ mom’s disappearance and Marcus never forgave him for that so he enlisted into the COG with his second family, the Santiagos. Now JD is in the COG with his little family. Marcus is reliving those haunted memories. No wonder he’s missed fighting the Locust/Swarm “in a weird, messed up sort of way.” Fighting was always his escape away of his family problems. God, I love Gears.
I guess you could say Marcus had it coming since it bit him back in the ass and now he feel the same pain his dad felt and wished he did forgive him a lot sooner after realizing why Adam kept his mother's death a secret since he didn't want to risk war between the humanity and the locust and tried to prevent it but sadly failed to keep peace between them and Marcus hated himself for being an asshole to his father and wished they could've patched things up between them only to be separated from each other and only to be reunited with each other for hours before his death and doesn't want the same for him and JD.
For some reason...Marcus looks...scarier. It's not just because his voice is more baritone, but also probably because he's a dad now, and dads are usually intimidating to be around.
Exactly. and it just hit me. her mother died. which was the closest thing to the last queen. so they means the swarm is going to go after her now isnt it ?
Actually the reference Dom an absolute ton. The tomatoes. James' middle name The biggest one though is the knife JD uses to stab the Jin-bot. Its Dom's knife, and the same knife Marcus uses to kill Myraih with at the end of GoW3.
+Jeff Merchant I thought he was 45 but... WE STILL HAVE UNCHARTED AND LITTLE BIG PLANET AND METAL GEAR SOLID AND RATCHET AND CLANK!!! AND BLOODBORNE AND THE LAST OF US AND SPIDERMAN!!! AND MANY MORE!!!
did anyone else noticed the KR-37 Designation on Baird's king raven? The KR-37 unit was used in gears of war 2 during the start of the assault in landown and was right above delta squad for some time during the mission. holy shit, that bird has made it so far.
You could pick up that locust dog tag too, looks like the insignia at the end of Gears 4. In Gears 2 it was that place with all the religious markings when you meet the Kantus for first time.
16:50 JD: “You’ve been in her position. Did you wait for backup?” Flashback: Dom and Marcus rescuing Adam Fenix, and then rescuing Maria Santiago without backup. Marcus: “Ah, shit.”
3:20 Marcus: "Didn't catch your name." Kait: "My name is Kait, daughter of Gabriel Diaz and Reyna Torres. Granddaughter of Myrrah and heir to the throne!"
Listen I love GOW. But this story felt very under developed. Remember gears 1 and 2 the story was great. Going deeper and deeper into the locust. The vile creatures you see in the prologue. Destroying cities. Killing soldiers. It really felt like you were fighting a war that ment something. This just feels like a quick adventure for us and his friends. I didn't make any emotional connections. So when that girls mom died I felt zero. But yet when Maria died. I felt like someone died in my family. You barely knew her, but you loved Dom because he was your brother. Always by your side. M iddle of the locust HQ and he's mowing down with you. So when he lost someone, and hand to do it by his own hand, you felt it. You felt that sadness in the games tension. Another example, tia killed himself, I dropped my controller. I remember the exact moment. I felt utter despair. And don't even get me started and when dom died. I think TRUE gear fans get the gist of my point. Good game but not a great story.
Last point sorry, when you finally killed the locusts queen in three, it's almost indescribable how good it felt to see marcus stab that bitch. Yet when you kill that Crystal headed guy, I was just like " OH cool, a curb stomp." Just saying
Yeah this game story didn't feel special or anything at all to me as the other gears did. They were a little decent but that was all watching Dom died was probably the most sadness thing I 've seen playing a game
I agree 100% and I'm one of those people who feel this game is nearly perfect, I only have nitpicks with it. They definitely need to do better with the story next time around.
when Marcus says trust me ive been their he means rip Dom wish he was still here without them there wouldn't of been gears of war "brothers to the end"
If it weren't for Marcus, I'd probably not be interested in Gears of War 4. He's seriously the best thing about the series and I'm glad we'll see him again in Gears 5
I hope they make a DLC where we could play the story line from gears of War 3 to 4 so we could find out what happened in settlement 2 and how anya died.....I miss anya 😟😭
Fuck, old man Marcus it still sexy as hell. Though I'm still really upset that they killed Anya off but kept everybody else (except the obviously been-dead ones). She was one of my favorite characters in GOW3!!!
Marcus Fenix, the old man Logan of Gears. Lost so much family & brother's but he keeps fighting. This whole series is awesome! Thank you for making this video btw. 🐺🤘
Gears of War 4 is awesome, great story and great gameplay, like the previous Gears of War games were. And when I first saw that cutscene of Marcus being released from his pod, it got me emotional. JD reflected me there when he was trying to get Marcus to breathe, as I was hoping he doesn't die. I am so used to playing as Marcus Fenix as the main playable character; it would have felt like a formal break up, if he were to die in this game. Great writing, The Coalition! From my experience in playing this game, you are worthy of preserving one of my most favorite Xbox exclusive video games of all time! Great stuff!
First time goin through this game and finally seeing the old crew was amazing. Seeing that even as old men these dudes still act the same way and kick ass the same way
To be honest Atreus evolves into a well rounded warrior who grows to love his estranged father in a coming of age, father and son type journey. JD just makes me wanna put gears of war 1 back on and just pretend like I’m back when I was ten. And yes I ten is way to young to be playing gow
Anyone remember when Marcus and the others made it out of the Rift Worm? Seeing Marcus survive being podded made me remember when the whole crew had to cut their way out.
If they would have/If they kill Marcus Fenix I wouldn’t play the series. It would be like killing off Master Chief, Kratos, Rick Grimes, Sam Fisher, etc. Tired of childhood heroes being killed off. Don’t do it!!!
EpicCoalition 1 well it’s both gear 1 and 2 but it’s a little bit updated the shoulder pads are white and he has new knee pads other than that it’s the same
mudkip96 That makes some sense, but Queen Myrrha is more human than any of the other locust. I don't think RAAM would be the grandfather because Kait's mother looks completely human, and has red hair (which I think is a clue, but Myrrha has white hair if I'm right.)
Also, I love that Marcus thinks that he knows the "Swarm" 9:20.... Ooooo I got your ass now.... 9:33... Taste grenade mother.......uh oh. 9:56.... Oh GOD! IT's LIKE THAT VIDEO THAT BAIRD KEEPS SENDING ME!
NesDogg yeah same but I knew they ain’t gonna kill off one of video games most biggest bad asses and not to mention the first 3 games main character by some pod bullshit if he goes out he goes out like a badass
A) Im more scared of the Locust now than from Gears 1-3, B) the Gears series is getting darker, I like it C) holy fuck the Locust symbol in the end. D) great video
I can't wait to see Gears 5, since they've learned from Gears 4 (which was a great game but had its issues) and because Rod has said "Gears has to be Gears *of War* at some point", meaning Gears 5 will have larger conflicts like Gears 2.
The Locust scared me more. They were more cohesive and were a lot more powerful than the Swarm. The series is actually lighter than it used to be, due to the more bright lighting and more youthful, upbeat characters. The Locust reveal felt a little convenient. And the last I do agree with.
The scene where Marcus almost died got me as emotional as JD the first time I played this game, and I got relieved as hell that he survived. He's my favorite character in Gears of War. If they ever make Marcus Fenix playable in one mission (at least), in Gears of War 5 or 6, to save JD or something, that would be a treat. I'd get the "Home sweet home" vibe.
1:05 is when Marcus realizes the JD will have to fight a war like he did. JD will have to suffer like Marcus did, go into battle with a significant chance of never making it out, and lose friends like Marcus lost Dom. But worst of all Marcus fears all the fighting he did was for nothing.
I've always said that iconic video game characters are who they are because of their classical voice actors. Once you hear a perfect voice for a character in a game, you can't picture or hear anyone else do the voice unless the previous voice didn't suit the character by accident, but John (Batman: Under the red hood Joker) aka Marcus Fenix Fred (Black Ops zombies Nikolai) aka Damon Baird I could go on with more iconic character perfect voice matches but you get the idea. John's Fenix voice makes him intimidating in the GOW games and I can never unhear that Fenix voice.
