I'm glad that they tried real hard to keep the chainsaw. Because it became one of the most iconic weapon in video games. Once you see the chainsaw gun , you know what game you are playing

This is such a great "time capsule" of what game development used to be like in early 2000. Calling a guy "walking hr nightmare", discussing boob size of an NPC, taking about crunch in the open, actually playing live demos on stage... This stuff just doesn't happen anymore.

I was there for the midnight launches of Halo 2 & 3, Gears 2 & 3, Wow vanilla, Burning Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King....kids today have no idea what it was like to gather with a hundred fans of gaming in the middle of the night and buy your game at 1 in the morning. Those were the days!

I’ve gotta give it to the guy, he lead a team to develop and make one of my favourite games series of all time.

Holy shit this was back when E3 actually mattered to the industry, like, A LOT.

The "Created by Geoff Keighley" at the end felt like a post-credits stinger lol

Epic also didn't want to sell the maps as DLC, they wanted to do what they did with Unreal on PC forever, keep giving free content to keep players engaged and around. They believed more in the day 1 sales of the games in the franchise, so they wanted to keep people there so they'd get huge sales on Gears 2 and so on. MS ofcourse saw things differently, and that began the 1st map packs delays that went on forever, until Epic got upset enough to start putting out little blogs explaining that the maps were actually done early and it was MS struggling with them. They eventually gave in to MS after a final behind-closed-doors sitdown where clearly MS dropped bags of $$$$ on Epic, and the transparency disappeared and the $DLC$ map packs became a thing in Gears.

I am 3 and a half minutes into this and it's already so insane to me that a company willingly published this. Insane how much culture has changed, but I guess it really has been 20 years 💀

To think, this guy had it all. He literally had a hot tub in his house overflow. He was living the dream. Gears 3 releases and he decides to LEAVE to make his own "overwatch" called lawbreakers. He then lost it all.

What a great time capsule of what life was like back in the day! It's the perfect blend of cringe and nostalgia. The fact that the game still holds up today goes to show how much of a labor of love this was for the team that worked on it.

They nailed it forsure, I'm so lucky to have been a teenager when this game came out. Great times both online/offline.

In adressing the locust drone AI in the game they obviously forgot to focus on Dominic Santiago because his AI is just horrible and an annoyance to play with remember?

The "I can't yell at anyone here, because everyone's working hard" immediately followed by "Mike's a good manager of people" had me going "he doesn't really sound like a good manager of people if he's disappointed he can't yell at anyone" I was thinking "I'm not sure I like any of these people," and then the "my girlfriend is 19, and I'm 31" guy appeared and convinced me I definitely hate these people. They're all genuinely unlikeable.

Hey, just wanted to say thanks for uploading this! I remember watching it on MTV when it aired and I had the sudden urge to watch it again. I feel your description for the video is spot-on as well and seriously...thank God for the chainsaw! Gears of War was the game that got me hooked to the Xbox 360 and I can't believe how far it's come. I actually just bought GOW 3 and I can't wait to get started. Thanks again!

Not sure why this showed in my feed. Before this launched in 2006, I was invited to a launch party in Chapel Hill at a small bar. I think hosted by Xbox live. Maybe 150 people all got to play got a tshirt, chatted with Cliff. Was a great time.
