Unit 0, Lesson 1 The Basic Operations Virtual Class Video
What basics do you really need to understand in order to master GED math? Turns out, not that many. And probably not the ones you think. Unit 0 digs deep into those few crucial pre-algebra concepts to lay a strong foundation for GED Math.
In the first lesson, The Basic Operations, we dive deep into understanding the four basic mathematical operations, their symbols and definitions and some crucial vocabulary.

My excessively long notes (summarizing the whole lesson) *Operations* _Addition_ (+) combining any sized group or and/or pieces of the same kind of thing (unit) sum: an addition expression (problem) or its simplified expression (answer) (ex: 5 + 6: the sum of 5 and 6 is 11) _Subtraction_ (-) removing groups or pieces from a total difference or distance: a positive subtraction expression or its simplified expression subtract a negative number with parentheses inverse of addition (ex: 25 - 6: the difference between 25 and 6 is 19) _Multiplication_ (parentheses or proximity) combining the same number of the same sized groups or pieces product: a multiplication expression or its simplified expression scaling: enlarging or decreasing size by a scale factor (like x2 or x1/2) (ex: 5(6): the product of 5 and 6 is 30) _Division_ (fraction bars) breaking a total into a number of the same sized groups or pieces quotient: a division expression or its simplified expression inverse of multiplication (ex: 6/3: the product of 6 and 3 is 2) *GED applications* _Example 1: mathematical reasoning_ addition must combine the same type of thing 8 apples + 6 oranges =/= 14 apple-oranges, so 8x + 6y =/= 14xy 8 apples + 6 oranges = 8 apples and 6 oranges (or 14 fruit), so 8x + 6y = 8x and 6y 3/5 + 1/5 = 4/5 3/5 + 1/4 =/= 4/5 _Example 2: interpreting word problems_ Juana has $15.79 on her GameOn play card. How many $0.25 tokens can she purchase? she has a total amount, 15.79. she wants to purchase multiple pieces of the same thing and each is 0.25, so they are same sized pieces. breaking a total into same sized groups is division. 15.79/.25 A recipe calls for 3 1/2 cups of flour. Joan wants to make 1/4 of a batch. How much flour does she need? she wants to make less than a batch, so she's scaling it down (multiplication). 3 1/2(1/4) The all time record high temperature in Prescott, Arizona is 105°F. The record low temperature is -21°F. Find the difference between the record high and record low temperatures. "difference" is subtraction and is positive, so start with the bigger number. 105 - (-21) _Example 3: writing algebraic expressions, equations, and inequalities_ Find the product of 2x + 1 and x - 6. "product" is multiplication. (2x + 1)(x - 6) Which expression represents the distance between the two points, C and D, on the number line? a. C + D b. |C + D| c. C - D d. |C - D| "distance" is subtraction and is positive. it's impossible to know if C - D is a positive number. absolute value makes numbers positive, so |C - D| will be a positive subtraction expression. (d) Translate the phrase "twice the sum of a number, m, and 12 equals 5" into an algebraic equation. "sum" is addition, so the sum of m and 12 is m + 12. "twice the sum" means m + 12 two times, or 2(m+ 12), and that all equals 5. 2(m + 12) = 5 Maki has some number, m, of marbles. Leilani has 5 less than Maki, or m - 5 marbles. Kainoa has twice as many marbles as Maki, or 2m marbles. Write an expression to represent their total numbers. different sized groups are being combined, which is addition. (m) + (m - 5) + (2m)

I'm so glad I found you. I didn't get to finish school when I was younger but was always an entrepreneur. I run a tech company, but I have an opportunity to expand my career. Unfortunately, I need a diploma to do so and this is exactly what I needed. This is underrated and undervalued content.

35:20 I'm sure I'll get it as I learn, but I don't understand why this problem with Joan requires multiplication rather than division. Start with the amount of flour needed for the original recipe: 3 and a half cups. Now, we want to make a quarter batch, which means we need to find one-fourth (1/4) of the original amount. To find one-fourth of a number, we can divide it by 4. Divide the original amount, which is 3 and a half cups, by 4. 3.5 cups ÷ 4 = 0.875 cups Therefore, Joan needs 0.875 cups of flour to make a quarter batch.

That is another way to say the exact same thing! Taking 1/4 of something (multiplying by one fourth) is the same as taking one piece out of four, so you can also divide by four, effectively breaking into 4 pieces. I love that you made that connection and wanted it clarified! It shows that you are really using the mathematical reasoning that you need for the GED (and life), way more than memorizing processes. Plus, that is actually a very good example of WHY we divide fractions the way we do. Dividing by a fraction is equivalent to (another way to do the exact same thing), multiplying by it’s reciprocal (flip) So multiplying by 1/4 and dividing by 4/1 (or just four) are the same Now think about how you would apply your logic if I wanted 3/4 of something! I could multiply by 3/4 (the scaling method) but we could also use your logic to figure it out another way! One that doesn’t require knowing how to multiply with fractions. Can you figure it out using your same reasoning?

@@LightandSaltLearning Thanks for the reply, I'm still only on the second video of the crash course and my brain reboots the moment I see a fraction, so I can't answer your question just yet. I'll be going through the videos to slowly learn!

Hi. I'm new here. I haven't been in school for years and have to take my math ged. I am lost and don't know which videos of yours to start with. Recommendations, please, so I can add it to my list and start studying. I've passed all subjects and now I have to focus on my math. Worst subject for me 😢. It's been over 20 years since I was in school.

Go to www.lightandsaltlearning.org and use our Crash Course rather than trying to find your way on RU-vid. There the videos are organized in a logical order to learn, are accompanied by practice activities, and there are directions to help you to know which videos and practices to use based on your learning needs.

6 over 3 is so confusing to me, I'm used to them in fractions and fractions have slightly different rules at least in my brain. I'll trust you but the fraction bar is messing with my symbol knowledge, I'd probably just leave that as an improper fraction of i saw it out in the wild.
