Below is a preview of some of the story and some of the questions we'll be covering. Today's story is "The Cat in the Rain" by Earnest Hemingway.
There were only two Americans stopping at the hotel. They did not know any of the people they passed on the stairs on their way to and from their room. Their room was on the second floor facing the sea. It also faced the public garden and the war monument. There were big palms and green benches in the public garden.
Question: What’s the setting of the story?
In the good _____ there was always an artist with his easel. Artists liked the way the palms grew and the bright colors of the hotels facing the gardens and the sea. Italians came from a long way off to look up at the war monument. It was made of bronze and glistened in the rain. It was raining. The rain dripped from the palm trees.
Question: Which word most likely fits in the blank?
A. Clocks
B. Weather
C. Remote
D. buildings
Water stood in pools on the gravel paths. The sea broke in a long line in the rain and slipped back down the ____ to come up and break again in a long line in the rain. The motor cars were gone from the square by the war monument. Across the square in the doorway of the café a waiter stood looking out at the empty square
Question: Which word best fits in the blank?
A. Beach
B. Pilots
C. Shirt
D. Wallet
The American wife stood at the window looking out. Outside right under their window a cat was crouched under one of the dripping green tables. The cat was trying to make herself so compact that she would not be dripped on.
Question: Based on what you know so far, do you think the cat is likely to play a major or minor role in the story?
A. Major role
B. Minor role
‘I’m going down and get that kitty,’ the American wife said.
‘I’ll do it,’ her husband offered from the bed.
‘No, I’ll get it. The poor kitty out trying to keep dry under a table.’
The husband went on reading, lying propped up with the two pillows at the foot of the bed. ‘Don’t get wet,’ he said.
Question: Which of the following literary devices is this part of the story an example of?
A. Dialogue
B. Metaphor
C. Onomatopoeia
The rest is all in the video! Thanks for watching.

I picked door because it mentions they walked passed in the door, meaning they are now inside the hotel. To me, it makes more sense that the maid would wait close to the door instead of the umbrella. It doesn't make much sense if they are inside and the maid is standing close to the umbrella when it doesn't rain inside the hotel....

Hi coach, I have a question in the time 22:16 the answer you said was umbrella, I thought the same but I remembered in another video you explained something as a rule and it was about the word "an" comes before words that start with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u) that tip I copied that's why I remember. Ok, in this case there is a word started with "u" but there is not the word "an" that's why I changed for the other possibility, door. Please tell me about it, because I don't understand in case I'm wrong. Thank you, and I am still preparing me for my last assignment Language Arts. Take care coach!

Hi, thanks for watching and for your question! This is a good question. I can see why this would be confusing. If the word before the blank is "an," then the missing word is almost always going to be a word that starts with a vowel (a, e, i, o, u). However, the missing word can still start with a vowel even if the word before the blank isn't "an." Does this make sense? Thanks again for watching.
@mariapidelaserra981
@mariapidelaserra981 8 месяцев назад
@@TestPrepChampions thank you coach. Probably I see the rule incomplete even the word "an" wasn't there. Now is clear for me, to be honest is more complicated now because could be or not, that is the question...(joke) The rule only work when the word "an" is on the sentence, is clear now. Thank you for your time
