Wow, this is such an old video - it always makes us happy when someone comes across it. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment, we always appreciate it :)
Sensei, we have always done this through my Hanshi’s school in Indiana. For a time in the early 2000’s he was spending time with Meriman Sensei as Hanshi was making sure his school was in line with the Jundokahn kata wise. You’re the first person outside of our family tree of black belts/school owners to know “straight line bunkai” as we call it. Thanks again sir for the excellent material.
Ah, your lineage is excellent, Jett! We know Sensei Meriman indeed. The straight line kata is invaluable, especially when looking to better understand the bunkai, and to reinforce the rule: don't be fooled by embusen. Just because we change directions in a kata, it doesn't mean we are facing a different opponent: just trying to save space!
@@GojuRyuKarateCentre allow me to be more clear- my Shihan/Hanshi opened the first Goju Ryu program in Indiana along with Mr. Glen Kenney. I wouldn’t say Merriman Sensei was part of our lineage. Shihan and Mr Merriman fostered a relationship for a few years to make sure we were close to Jundokahn in our kata, applications/analysis.....
@@GojuRyuKarateCentre had the pleasure of training with him several times during that period and I joined he and shihan for a after training dinner. He had fantastic experiences to share.
Great video! Love the fact that you use kata as a basic tool to develop your karate. In my humble opinion there is way too much focus on sports karate these days, where kata has become ballet. Athletic performance over understanding the true meaning of the kata and being able to apply it.
Thank you so much for these kind words! We definitely believe that kata is the heart of karate, but that it is only as good as the intent behind it. Kata for the sake of points isn't really kata - like you say, it becomes a dance.
Thank you! This is one of our earlier videos - we now have a lapel mic and only film in landscape, which has really made a difference to our quality. Thank you for taking the time to watch and send feedback, always appreciated 🙇🏻♀️
