In this vedeo I show you how to create a charcoal image transfer on the gel plate. By using charcoal sticks and acrylic paint this is a simple alternative image transfer method. Facebook / markwillsartwork Instagram markwillsar...
This is possibly the best use I have ever seen of a gelli plate. I love this technique. Thank you so much for sharing it and your explanation was fabulous.
Hello! I just liked and subscribed to you channel! How generous of you to share this with us. I am a total beginner with a new gel plate and it means so much to get good (understandable!) information. I am a senior and also appreciate there not being loud crazy music! 😉 I look forward to future videos, learning, and being inspired by your lovely work! 🙏🏼
you have found one of the best uses for the gel plate--ever!!! thank you so much for sharing. YOU ARE AN ARTIST!!1 YOU COULD USE A CRAYON AND CREATE SOMETHING WONDERFUL! I look forward to seeing what else you do.
Wow, this is one of the best gel plate tutorials I've seen, simply brilliant. I like the fact that this is original art, whereas a magazine pull has copyright concerns for me. Your techniques are amazing and your teaching skills are exceptional. P.S. I love the fact that there is no music in the background as i find it so distracting. Can't wait to see more from you, I'm so taken with your style and ability!
I agree and thanks for reminding me Kathy! I commented already but somehow forgot to mention that! For me, Mark using his original art makes him stand out from the crowd.
@@MissIdolize if your new to gel printing, and you are looking for something a little different tutorial wise I would highly recommend “Yeates Makes” he inspired me to try gel printing and has a lot of really informative process tutorials, much more than me.
I've just recently been trying gel printing monotypes, and your videos are by far my favorite. I haven't been too knocked out by the "artsy-craftsy" look of my prints, but your techniques have shown me that I can get back to the more fine art look of my previous oil paint/clear acrylic plate monotypes. Thank you so much!
Thanks Mark, that means a lot coming from you. Your videos where what inspired me to try out lots of different techniques on the gel plate as you were the only one really that I could find that was doing more fine art print style gel plate stuff. Always love seeing your new videos and where your pushing gel plate printing towards. 👍🏻
Fantastic clear demo Mark. I have been struggling with getting good results using image transfer from a gel plate. I also prefer the idea of creating my own artwork to use..... so thank you very much! will have a go....
Thanks for this! I've struggled like crazy with image transfers and am excited to try this! I have everything I need too - the gelli plate, the transfer papers, the charcoal, and mixed media paper. I'm going to do this tomorrow! So happy to find a way that I think will really work after all! Thanks again!
Cool. Yes you can get some really interesting tones if you blend parts of the charcoal out, a little tip, if you rub some charcoal onto a separate piece of paper to produce charcoal dust, you can apply that to the transfer paper with a blending stick thing or an earbud, might be known to you as a que tip?? Anyway you can achieve some lovely soft tones to add dynamic range to your image. Let me know how you get on!
@@gelwithmark Fabulous tip! (Yes, Q-tip.) Thanks! And I am about to experiment with white charcoal on the tip of the nose of the horse I copied from my inkjet print. Curious if white charcoal will do something. But whatever, this is doing great so far!
This method is positively delicious! I agree with you-it’s much more “arty” than the magazine transfers that everyone else does. Thanks so much for sharing!
Finally, the gelli plate grows up to be a really fantastic printing tool. You are wonder, I adore your images as well, Quite contemporary, love it love, oh did I say I love it? Holy Bum Snot I am hooked!
@@gelwithmark You can do the same transfer technique you did, but using stick chalk pastels. Pan pastels can be placed directly on the gel plate, then the print pulled with acrylic, or gel medium. There are a few video tutorials on RU-vid. 😊
Thank you so much, I don't really like the magazine transfer, I want to give my transfers a more personal style. So your method is perfect! Thanks again!
Yes I’m totally the same as you in regards to the transfers. You don’t have to use tracing paper either you can use normal paper too, it gives you much more scope for varying the tonal values. Enjoy.
WOW. That is gorgeous. Love the photos. I'm definitely going to try this method/medium. Thanks for a great tutorial/demo and thanks for no irritating music! Awesome.
Hi Mark, thanks for generously sharing this process! I have tried this out with my high school art class and they love it! They are creating some amazing stuff! Great change from the usual Lino, etching etc. and very immediate!
I really enjoyed this tutorial. The description of how to follow this process was very easy to understand for how to have success in using charcoal sticks to transfer original images. The resulting pull off a Gelli Plate creates an original, one of a kind piece of art. Thank you for sharing this technique of yours. Kudos to you!
Thanks for your comment. In regards to the 2nd face, when I was doing this print, it wasn’t a case of “do I think this images needs something else?” it was more I want to see if 1- I can add a second charcoal transfer over the top of a transfer that has already been added to the plate and 2 - I’m always trying experiments to see what might happen and what happy occurrences might be achieve through these experiments. 🙂
Brilliant Mark…well done on your first video, having watched many other gel plate tutorials,I was wondering why nobody had experimented with charcoal and had put me off having ago because I simply thought it didn’t have great results but you have shown me it can..can’t wait to give this a go!!!Thankyou so much for sharing and look forward to seeing more from you.Good luck with your new channel 👍👏🏻
Had a go this morning Mark, just did a trace from a magazine and charcoaled over the top of it as per your tutorial and it turned out great!Youve given me the inspiration to draw something of my own now and have another go!Many many thanks.Keep up your amazing artwork and I look forward to your next video!!!😍
Great stuff Mark, simple and effective. You present the subject well and I’ve no doubt this channel will take off. I can’t wait for more videos from you. Good luck 🤞🏻
Thank you so much for sharing this, I love the idea of being able to create prints from my own charcoal sketches. I will definitely be giving this a go!
@@gelwithmark Hi again, I absolutely love this technique of being able to combine your own drawing with printing. I have videoed myself trying it out and will publish the video at 4pm on Friday here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mtNSP_z4wIk.html I have given you a shout-out and linked your channel in the video description. Many thanks!
Thank you for posting this! I want to get into monoprinting. I am already an illustrator with only a minor interest in collage and I had issues with image transfers too on my first attempt...and I was using vintage magazines.. I want something a little more artsy and want to draw my own stuff, but wasnt sure how to approach it. Thank you again for this technique.
Congratulations! You made the jump! Your video is great--very smooth! I love how the charcoal transfers look, as well as the torn edge. Can't wait to give it a try! I'm also really feeling the powerful imagery. It still feels different to me than your other gel images I've seen, most reminiscent of the man series, but so much more powerful. Keep up the good work! I can't wait to see what comes next!
Perfect video. I have a Brother laser printer at home and couldn't get a Gel print from a black and white copy until I ran the paper twice through the machine. This is because home laser printers don't get enough ink on the paper
@@pascaleputz1027 I would like to find some other type of transfer method that I could use though as I have some very intricate illustrations and some nice photos that I’ve draw/taken that I would like to be able to use in my work some how, just haven’t managed to find a suitable transfer method for that tho, I’ll keep investigating.
@@gelwithmark I know it's not the same but yould print them on Deli or tissue paper which becomes transparent when glued down with e gel matte medium. To feed this fine paper through the printer you'll have to "glue" it to copy paper or use Freezer paper
This is my first video I’ve seen by you and I have to say this is amazing! And like you, I’ve never been able to get laser prints to work. I can’t wait to try your method. Thank you!
OMG! I am completely astonished. What an amazing idea and technique complemented with clear instructions. Thank you for sharing this with us. I look forward to seeing what comes next.
@@gelwithmark I admit I’m more excited than anxious although quite honestly when I’m so excited over a new venture it seems to be the time I most often flub it all up but, I’m digging out a soft charcoal pencil and going to give it a try. I’ll watch the video again and have a go. Thanks.
Nice self portraits! I have used this technique on the gel plate. Vellum works if you don't have tracing paper. Parchment paper baking liners work, but that gets the characteristic long, warped lines when it contacts the plate...which is a look that might work well for you, depending on your subject. I haven't tried waxed paper or freezer paper with charcoal, but for masks and stencils, of course. I imagine the charcoal would release from the latter two most effectively onto the gel plate. I will have to try it with my vine charcoal! Welcome to the bright-shiny world of RU-vid Tutorials!
@@gelwithmark I just used tissue paper and it worked well to see through for alignment on the plate...even for spot application instead of whole-sheet. Such possibilities!
thats brilliant because you always have to use a lazor toner and i onlyhave an ink printer that wastes alot of ink. so glad i found thia alternative,,thanks so much.
My pleasure. Hope it works out for you. I have some more videos on my channel where I combine this process with soft pastel pencil and more complex acrylic painting, check it out if you’re interested.
Fantastic! Love the creativity and abstract. I'm with you on the inability to get Laser prints for a reasonable price and location. Thank you for sharing.
Soft pastels do work yes, I use pastel pencils in combination with charcoal most of the time I do my transfers, pastel pencil for the outline and then charcoal for the shading.
Loving this, as for an illustrator. Going to give it ago. I had a challenging time with the zine and laser prints but as you said these are original works of art. I have subscribed. Thank you for the inspiration!
😂 yes the nails, I have two young daughters and I’m made to visit their pretend nail salon quite frequently oh and my customer name has to be “lovely Linda” when I’m booking in! 😅
I love this as I haven't been able to get other forms of transfers to work either, the only method that has worked for me has been using oil pastels. Also, I would rather have original images that I myself have created rather than a magazine, etc as I feel I am stealing someone else's work. Big thank you for this
