@@yeatesmakes Hi Mark, I've only recently discovered your channel, but I'm very grateful THAT I found it! What an inspiration and creativity! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us.... One question about the laser copy transfer: is there any trick? I manage to transfer magazines without any problems, but printing my own photo and transferring it to gelli is just not possible... Thanks and greetings from Austria 😊

For teaching and buying in bulk, in USA if you set up account with GelliArts you can buy for resale pricing, if you have a business license. Then they are wholesale pricing. 1/2 the cost. I was teaching Gelli printing and did this. Also allowed me to sell the plates to students in class.

I welcome new manufacturers as gelli and then gel press have dominated the market with their exclusive rights of plates from the medical gel manufacturer here in the US. Cutthroat business! Love your videos, enthusiasm and sharing techniques with us, Mark. Cheers.

Very impressed with these plats and have loads of questions. But also a little comment, I recently bought a second 8x10, gel plate brand, it is absolutely identical, packing and all, to the Gelli plate one but much cheaper for that size. I noticed that the materials were made in Taiwan, this is mentioned on both packs. The speedball plate is a totally different thing according to reviews. The baren looked good and it looked to me as if you had some differently sized plates there. I really liked the large square…. And the baren. I can’t wait for your pastels video, I have loads of the stuff, and pastel pencils too….. Seeing your techniques again is always useful. I am using my plates almost daily now, slowly working out what I can make happen best, so a recap is always welcome. I love the printmaking potential of these things, and how it is a great way to generate new ideas just because of having to work with its limitations. What a generous package of plates that was! The makers clearly see you are someone who can demo them well.

You've summed up so well what makes the gel plate appealing to me. As someone with a fair bit of traditional printmaking experience, it IS the limitations of the gel plate that encourage problem solving and finding ways. I'm yet to find a single piece of printmaking kit that is more versatile in what you can achieve. They lack the refinement of block printing or intaglio but more than make up for it in versatility and immediacy. Lovely comment, thanks : )
@susantische7655
@susantische7655 Год назад
I believe the reason for the similarity is gelli brand brought the item to market many years ago-having it manufactured to their specs, then gel arts brand somehow obtained the exclusive rights and gelli has to purchase from them, thus the higher price. These were made in US and was not aware of the location change.

I just checked the pricing at TEMU (most plates sold out) and on Amazon. 8x10 plate at TEMU is USD 28, Gelli is USD 27. It looks like price advantage has evaporated. However there are some perforomance differences as you pointed out Mark in your brilliant review of techniques here. THANK YOU !!!
@qso3566
@qso3566 Год назад
What I don't like about the TEMU page is that they're claiming the plates are hugely discounted ... for instance, the regular price of the 8 x 10 is showing to be $42 which is ridiculous but they're applying a 39% "discount" ... I don't like those kinds of sales tactics.

Excellent result overall. If the plates are cheaper it is tempting to push them to the limit to see what can be achieved. I have been wary of using anything a bit grainy on a costly gel plate but a small cheap one offers scope for new art pathways. There is a people's art joy to your work with lively experimentation which is appreciated. The chair is a neat, satisfying image.

@@ArtyAntics I teach gel printing and store all my gel plates on an acrylic plate on one side, and a sheet of paper on the other. Some of the oil will leak into the paper, but there are no bubbles that will affect the surface of the gel plate. I love that you reviewed this plate because mine arrived in mail this week and I’m totally a beginner. It beaded really badly so I googled and washed it well in dishwashing liquid. Tried various brand acrylic paints, I mostly have Atelier Interactive, Atelier Free Flow and some cheaper pouring paints. All very difficult to achieve smooth coverage. Some lovely effects at times but no solid colour. Mixed the thicker ones with gel medium or flow medium. Ok but still not great. Finally I tried a cheap Reeves black I had. And voilà!! Rolled beautifully. Is that what was the problem? Wrong paints? Is there a guide for ones that work best? Thank you for your wonderful videos. I’m so inspired.

Thanks for releasing this on my birthday! What a thoughtful gift. How did you know? Lol. Really nice review of so many of the techniques from the last two (or so) years. Almost a Master Class in gel printing techniques. But no masking tape? Tragic! However, you included another raven, so I forgive you. When will that one be hitting the shop? There are classroom packs of gel plates, from various brands. They generally are available for only the smaller plates, and they usually are slightly thinner. The 8 x 10 is the largest I recall seeing. There are fewer options now than there used to be. (I suppose supply chain issues may be the cause.) But I just checked and found 10 packs of 5 x 7 plates from both Speedball and Gelli Arts for USD $126.49 and $144.00, respectively. I suppose inflation has taken its toll; they used to be around $10 per plate. Still, a good deal more reasonable than buying them individually. Although, you'd think the manufacturers would provide educational institutions access to order directly from them, in really large quantities. What kind of price would be reasonable, for education purposes? Regarding the video, itself, I particularly appreciate the section on image refinement directly on the plate, before printing. That's something I frequently forget to consider. That footage is a great reminder that each of these techniques is, at root, just a tool with its own strengths and weaknesses, and that the final image is the thing that matters most. I can't wait to see more about chalk pastels for gel printing! (Are you possibly using pan pastels, too? I've seen a couple of YT titles that mention them.) In any case, thank you for another excellent episode! It's always good to know whether newer alternatives of anything are as good as the originals. Hopefully, the competition will have a beneficial effect on prices.
@lizday8140

Nice! I know my new Gelli Arts plate acted like those plates at first. I think it's the oils from the manufacturer that causes the slickness of the pull. I would venture that as you use them, the plates will become as grabby as mine did after a session of gel printing and the old newsprint method will work better on them. I think people who clean their plates with mineral oil each time probably don't experience as much stickiness as those of us who don't. I think the raven needs a perch!

Interesting! Yes would be great if they can lower the market prices and make it more accessible. I've seen people using pan pastels as well but I don't have any. There are also slight differences between Gel Press and Gelli Plate brands. I think it's connected to magazine transfers as well but would have to double check. I have made my own plates with vegetable glycerin and gelatin for small adult classes ( small classes not small adults lol). They're reusable if they get damaged. Just melt them down and re-set. Don't know if there's an issue with it being pork gelatin as it may not be halal. I didn't get good results with vegetarian gelatin but I only tried one brand. Or go old school with pure gelatin like the Victorians although this may limit you to paint / stencils / texture rather than the more interesting techniques you have explored. Guess it also depends on your art technicians time. Either recipe is fast to make and then you leave it to set. Make a big sheet and cut it up or use smaller trays. I also bought some thick 4mm acetate sheets for storage / protection.

@pippi pippi.. I bought Gel Press brand, as they were more reasonably priced, but have yet to get a successful magazine transfer.... Could be the wrong magazines I'm using, or perhaps the Gelli arts ones (or these chinese ones) are simply better for that technique🤔.

@@craftdipper Magazine transfers are tricky. I would search for specifically 'gel press' magazine transfers on RU-vid or Google. I have been able to do them on my home made plates. Vogue style magazines are best.

Great review thank you. What is it about the crow. We have a couple of resident crows who watch over the fig trees. As soon as the figs are ripe they bellow out to their buddies and very quickly the murder arrrives. A staggering and majestic flock devouring the fruit. Oh to capture that on a gel plate!

Hey, another terrific vid -- I did click on the temu link -- alas, the verification thing (puzzle piece into puzzle) didn't accept me -- failed over and over -- I tried it a number of times -- wanted to check out the prices . . . I'm very interested . . . Anyway -- ty again for great tips!

Your videos are mostly above my skill level but the possibilities make me soldier on. You ordered from Temu? I have been cautious to do that. Maybe…

Great information video as always. The images pulled off really cleanly, do you think it was because the gel plates are so new?

I can see you have some traditional printmaking techniques with your approach. I am used to working on a large etching press also with monoprints, chine collé and collagraphy. My last prints were made using a mini electric drill. I have just started with the gel plate a month ago and am so far enthralled with the journey. I like that I can just go into my studio and be a tad more spontaneous and use what I have, without driving to our printmaking studio. You've given me tons of ideas on how to expand working on a gel plate. Is this Gelelf a kit or did you chose each plate individually? Thank you so kindly for an abundance of ideas.

Hi Janis - thanks for your kind message, I'm delighted my videos are useful to you. The Gelfelf makers sent me their whole range in hope of a favourable review and to get some airtime. I admired their confidence to send me their stuff with no pressure to give a favourable review. Turns out their plates work really well so I was happy to give an endorsement. I reckon they will be available in UK soon.

I have been able to purchase their products in. New Zealand via Temu. I only bought one of the small sizes, but have been enjoying using it too.

You gave those plates a good workout Mark! Just wondering how you printed on the tissue paper. Did you use a carrier paper to feed it through the printer?

Hi Gina, yep, I glued the leading edge to a carrier paper, just a normal sheet of copier paper. Glad to know you're still out there tuning in : )

Thanks for the lovely comment - not sure you can buy the whole package I got. The makers sent me their full range leaving me free to review it if I wanted to. Fair play to them!!!!! Most people who contact me want me to do a sponsored review where I am obliged to say good things about their products!!!!! I was impressed they were so confident in their product they were willing to risk an impartial review. Turns out their plates work really well so their confidence was not misplaced!!!! Some comments suggest they are a bit low on stock. i know they are just starting out so you might need to be patient!

It looks like GELELF is priced about the same as the other brands, at least on Amazon as of this date. Perhaps another pair of hungry hands is now in the middle. I empathize with your situation . . . creativity is seldom properly funded. df

I just looked at the price of the larger sizes and the regular price for them is really high. The discounts will help, but still...why say they are really trying to cut the costs if you have to rely on a discount at the time of purchase? 🤔
