During the cool spring of 2023, GEM avocado trees close to a Bacon avocado tree set more fruit than those far from it, suggesting that the GEMs were pollenized by the Bacon.

Thanks for sharing I plan on pairing my GEMs with the newly released BL 516 LUNA despite the fact that Bacon is the only B-type that is known to do well here in the 831 northern central coast. I like the idea of a dark ripening hass like B-type hopefully LUNA can produce🙏🥑

What a contrast! Thanks for sharing. I have noticed my Pinkerton's production was greater when I had B pollinators and Mexican varieties around.

I've noticed the same with my Pinkerton.

Cool stuff. If your trees are dripping with fruit, you better have been dripping a lot of fertilizer!

The Bacon does have a lot of fruit also.

how do you determine the position of the gem trees as they are "facing" the bacon tree? for example, if the winds blows West to east, you place the bacon the the most west side and the gems along the East, NE, SE side?

I don't think it matters since it is flying insects that move the pollen between the trees. If you watch them work, you see bees and flies go between the trees no matter the direction, as far as my observations go. The most important factor is distance between the trees: the closer, the better.

Hi Greg: Happy pre-New Year !!! Loved to video. How old are your GEM trees shown in the video? Thank you, Joe

Hi Joe, Thanks! Those GEMs are on a farm in Fallbrook (not mine) and they are 5-6 years old.

Will Fuerte, Nabal, Sharwil or Zutano be just as effective with Gem or are there more prefered A/B groupings?

Maybe. Some people are beginning to study this right now, but I don't know of any studies finished on it yet. In some studies in the past with Hass, different B types have pollenized more effectively in different locations so that might be the case with GEM too. Regardless, having any B type always got Hass to yield more (over the course of a number of years) compared with no B type.

So, Greg, the GEM is an “A” flower type and the Bacon a “B.” So there’s enough similar flowering overlap between the two varieties to get that very good production? Would other “B” types also work?

I think any B type will help any A type, and even an A type will help an A type (to a lesser degree), especially in certain years like this one where the spring weather is very cool. But studies have found that some B types are more effective as pollenizers than others. Bacon has always done pretty well in those studies, as has Zutano and Ettinger. Fuerte and Sir-Prize have done well too. (Hass is usually the A type used in these studies.)

The GEM is so dramatic! It hides its fruit from outside view but, when the foliage is pulled back, astounding abundance of avocados on long stems, weighing down their limb. Mother GEM lays some of her offspring directly onto the leaf litter. Even the boughs drape down on the leave litter. I don't trim the skirts. If GEM wants to do it, who am I to doubt her wisdom?
