Gem Spa & St. Mark's Place - Whatta Town! 

Born and raised on 2nd St & 2nd Ave! Gem Spa was its coolest in the early 70’s...I’ve been there a countless number of times! RIP GEM Spa

New subscriber; I also came over from the Action Kid channel. In 1967, when I was 15, I worked in a head shop on St Marks in a basement storefront. Very cool: sold paraphernalia in the front and the good "stuff" out the back. In between was a room that had, in the middle of the floor, a huge invisible electric eye with strobe lights. There was an old Victorian stuffed chair facing the "eye" with speakers mounted on each arm rest (remember, this was high tech in 1967). So you would visit the "back room", then sit in the chair and watch the eye while some cool Big Brother & the Holding Company played through the stereo. Good times - good memories. Awesome video. I used to love chocolate egg creams when I was a kid growing up in Brooklyn, Lime Rickie's too! St. Marks certainly was a very cool street, if you hung out there you'd see every manner of person and the mini drama's that they were involved with. One night in May 1969 while waiting to see Led Zeppelin at the Fillmore, I hung out there for an hour or so, all sorts of people were passing by and one guy in particular seemed to be connected to much of what was going on, it was like he ruled the neighborhood.

Good stuff brother man, put a lot of memories for me; born in born in 1969 I live in 36 Saint Marks but originally in 127, I remember the clothing stores Andy's cheapies shazam's and The Late Late Late Show( what's up Frenchie this man looked out for this brown boy let me tell you, move to Paris and I never heard from him again😢) The record store I used to hang out with call free Bing later it became sounds, and let's not forget St Mark's Place movie theater and in a cool ass haircut spot called "open till midnight" also special shout-out to "the Electric Circus" AKA the How Club. Growing up then and look at it now has not changed much, because the energy of the people that bring it to life that's what I'm talking about all right. Be safe everyone🖖
