The guy making all those rhetorical statements? He sounded like he was trying to act like he was morally superior on some level and that he had something profound to prove; but he doesn't seem to be able to explain exactly what that is. he's coming at the General with a big bag of nothing; he's all false-bravado and gibber-jabber. He's pathetic as a debater. He's got nuthin' and he knows it and so does the General.

Orville: A lot of people have wondered why Westmoreland was kept in charge. One theory is that of the various candidate 5-star generals available, none except Westmoreland would accept the job.
@tunafish8769
@tunafish8769 3 года назад
Nobody could have won that war short of turning North Vietnam into a parking lot. Even if we had done that victory wouldn't have been certain. It was a no win situation. The NVA and VC were willing to absorb the losses. The French, Chinese, and Japanese, all learned that the hard way .
@WmGood
@WmGood Год назад
Orville, why not have Westy continue mucking it up?? The MILITARY INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX was literally making a killing ( irony intended here ) and they wanted to keep it rolling as long as they could to get fat contracts they could then poss on to others in brother-in-law deals. If there had been competent leadership pursuing the war it would have been over long before Westy was out. Of course there is a problem with the army itself in that competent leadership there was few and far between. The whole thing was a confluence of poor management decisions at all levels of government and military over a cash cow for the Military Industrial Complex. Making money is the name of the game. Never mind how much suffering and anxiety was created. .

@daphuc502
@daphuc502 Год назад
@@Leoluvesadmira actually Vietnam gained major grounds after tet offensive , the American rolling thunder and severe bombing of North Vietnam had forced millions of well trained well disciplined NVA soldiers to start moving down south. The abandonment of forward bases such as Khe Sanh resulted in the overrun of NVA in the South. My uncle fought for NVA as recon commando , in 1966 , he were moving down south by vehicles , while another uncle , who were also recon commando , moved down South by marching through treacherous jungles on foot in 1969 due to heavy US bombing of roads during and after Tet , which resulted in more training , hardship that would harden our will to fight the Americans to the very bitter ends.

Outdoor Adv: It appears so - and that is very unusual for an American general. Perhaps it is because deep down inside, he knew he had no idea how to run a war. He was, after all, a notorious "rock painter" as American soldiers called their dud officers.

@keithammleter3824
@keithammleter3824 3 года назад
@@outdooradventureHungary : He was indeed an artillery officer early in his career. But blaming that on his rotten performance and his lies to the President, Congress and the press as General Commanding in Vietnam is like rating Gen Macarthur a reconnaisance specialist, or Winston Churchill a horse expert or even just a news reporter. Or rating Paul Keeting, one of the best prime ministers Australia ever had, a mere rock band manager (of some pretty ordinary bands), for that was what he initially was. Or regarding some ivy league university chancellor a mere restaurant waiter, should that have been how he paid his way in his 20's. The fact is, once ANY military officer gets to multi-star general rank, what he did initially is long behind him, and they all had to start somewhere. Pershing and Patton began in cavalry - by the time they were generals they had probably forgotten what a horse looked like. Eisenhower was a football coach - which does not on the face of it explain anything. Westmoreland was a "rock painter" - a general that would severely criticise an officer for not having the correct, neat, and clean uniform and ignore the officer's first hand field report about something urgent. Westmoreland was obsessed with numbers and blind to reality - characteristics which are not inherent in artillery and just as undesirable in artillery. More of a fault acquired later when he was promoted way beyond his ability.

@@keithammleter3824 Võ Nguyên Giáp was a history teacher, completely self taught in military matters - fighting in the front ranks (wounded in action) as a youth and reading like a maniac military books. As an organizer and strategist he had a natural talent for military affairs. Westmoreland's skill was lacking. Personality of a leader in military matters - matters. Washington suffered significant defeats against the British but his main trait was that in defeat he was even stronger and kept the faith in final victory alive, he didn't crumble like Moltke junior in 1914 or Russian generals of the 1st and 2nd army in 1914 East Prussia or Hooker at Chancellorsville in May of 1863.
