As a late Boomer this really tickles me. The Gen Z kids are TOTALLY amazed; they have no idea what's happening! Great work as an ambassador for the hobby de G4MAD
It's always fun when people come up and ask what you're doing. It's even more fun when they stick around to see you work. I ran into a teacher I was mentoring at a park a while back. He watched me do my whole activation. At one point I worked France on 20m and he couldn't believe I was talking to someone in France with the little tiny radio I had on the picnic table. It was great LOL
That's awesome! Totally agree. I've had some pretty funny interactions out in the wild. Most of the time, people are just confused why I'm doing morse code. Loved these two guys. Asked genuine questions and were really interested in it. I'm just lucky I switched over to 17meters and was experiencing my first cold spell of the night and then one very timely QSO. Hard to chat in pileups 😂. Thanks for watching Evan! 73 de KI7QCF
😂 great video Forrest! We need more young blood in the hobby. Great progress on your part in 6 months. I actually have you listed twice in my hunter's log. 73 from KM3STU
@@newsjunkie3000 awesome! Thanks so much. Yeah totally agree I want more guys/gals younger than me getting interested in the hobby! It’s so much fun. 73 hope to catch you on the air again soon!
Fantastic job being an abassador for the hobby. I can see someone being a bit annoyed getting an activation interrupted. But, who knows, these two guys in 6 months may be doing CW also! 73's KF8AUV
Well done good sir! I love how they were astonished by a simple technology, and you displayed its effectiveness superbly. Way to make the "Heaviest Catch" out there that day. 73 from N0MLP.
Great job advocating for the hobby! I often think about getting new people interested in the hobby and it's great to see their interest light up and what was interesting to them. I often want to do my best job advocating when somebody comes up and asks questions, but it's so hard to pause things on the spot. I'm thankful when Becky can then be the advocate while I try to get to a stopping point. We've often talked about making a little mini documentary with the purpose of getting people's interest in learning Morse code. Something that would include pieces of History but also the elements of why it's so fun and relevant to learn today. I have the beginnings of an outline for such a thing. If we end up making it, we would put it somewhere so anybody who wants to can link to it maybe with a QR code to hand out for people who want to learn more.
Haha Huge + 1! 99% of my interactions out in the wild are unfortunately much less cordial as people are interrupting mid-exchange. I ironically had a guy come up to me during my first ever DX in a POTA activation. Had a P2P with New Zealand and the guy was asking me questions I had to tell him to [please] hold on! haha! The reason this real-world scenario turned into a good video was due to a perfect storm where I felt 20 meters dry up, hopped over to 17 meters and started calling CQ and it was super slow, then at the precise moment they gained interest I randomly was able to get a QSO and explain it to them live! Mike! That's an incredible idea. You should absolutely do it! It would be a great resource to point people towards the hobby. I 100% share the same motivation as you. This CW experience has been so captivating for me and I've instantly felt an urge to invite others to participate and experience the excitement that comes from it. That's really why I share my journey on RU-vid. Only a few months ago I was watching Thomas K4SWL and Aaron W4ARB on RU-vid and it really motivated me to keep going and give it a shot. 73!
Awesome. Your KH1 works excellently. I always get the same question from people, like, "What do you guys talk about?" The answer is that we exchange call signs, signal reports, and names. That's it.
@@dustinhasselbach6378 hahaha!! Yeah a few times I’ve been tempted to respond: “if I told you what I’m doing, I’d have to…” but I resist! 😂 thanks for watching 73 de KI7QCF
I love chatting about this hobby with strangers! And they stumble upon me quite a bit out in the wild. Loved these two guys! Genuinely curious about it and asked great questions.
On April 13th I woke up and decided I was going to go activate a park. This was about 3 weeks after my first CW QSO. I didn't plan it. and I wasn't ready. I just went and did it. I know it's the cliche but I really do invite guys to just go out there and get on the air with a POTA activation even if you don't feel 100% ready. Remember it's YOUR activation. At your pace and at your proficiency! My first 10 activations I probably copied 1-2 characters at a time and sent question marks inbetween. But it was worth it, because as a result I progressed so much faster. So, if you WANT to do it. Do it! I promise you won't regret it. Hope to catch you on the air! 73 de KI7QCF
@Utahforrest hey, just wanted to reply one more time. I saw your reply early this morning, and I thought, "F... it, imma just go out and make a fool out of myself." I made 20 CW contacts at US-1984 over a few hours (plus one SSB and one FT8 hunting 13 Colonies). The best part is that I didn't feel like I made a fool out of myself. Thanks for giving me the encouragement I needed to get out and try CW. 73, de WR4Y
So cool to see people of my generation actually expressing interest in this. I could tell you that most Gen Z have no interest whatsoever in sending “dits and dahs” on a small paddle.
Thanks for watching. And cool to hear you're part of that generation. I'll admit I was an originally licensed Technician in 2017 and knew of morse code but it didn't interest me at all. But like I mention in the video, a youtube video was what sparked it and the rest is history. I'm finding as people engage with it for the first time and see it in action it's pretty incredible to them. But I 100% agree, on the surface as an activity I think it doesn't interest many!
I feel like the dialog cut after "His name is Todd, he's in Tennessee" / "Oh how do you know that, just from Morse Code?" should have been "nah, PoLo looked him up for me" 🤣 73 de KI2D

@@W6IWN_Radio Thank you!!! Glad I found your channel as well. I could go for some good SOTA content! Im starting to get my feet wet with SOTA! :) 73 de KI7QCF
yo dude drunk again, dad white nikes , dude you hear voices ? Hey you coders Mores code that is...story time. some old people I've met some had strokes can't talk, fingers kinda move, but they are all HAM's and talk to each other daily on the key just like old times , makes them happy to talk to each other. Is that cool or what ? dude!
You did a great job, there. I think it's really fun when folks react to Morse code in the park. Funny, I also describe us as Nerds all over the world. Hope that doesn't bother the rest of you Nerds. KA5TXN
