This song and Helter Skelter demonstrate Paul McCartney's mastery of vocal rock singing. Its almost hard to believe its the very same singer of other Beatles songs such as, "Blackbird", "Mother Nature's Son", "I Will", Yesterday, "And I Love Her", "Here, There and Everywhere", "I'll Follow the Sun", "Martha My Dear", "Fool On the Hill", "When I'm Sixty Four", etc. All of where he used a softer singing voice. In the 1977 Paul demonstrated this again with his soft singing of his hit single, "Mull of Kintyre", along with the "B" side rocker, "Girl's School". And similarly in his 1976 live version of his rock songs "Hi, Hi, Hi", and "Rockshow" where he still showed his rock voice. And the fact that even in his 70's and 80's Paul is still singing "Helter Skelter" is truly amazing.

The Beatles are not only known for their huge variety of great songs, great musicianship, massive influence on rock music, but also for setting cultural trends in hair styles, clothing, and fandom. The Beatles have been one of my favorite bands since they came to America in 1964, and I'm thrilled that you are playing their music on your channel. If you choose more live performances, I would recommend some of their live early performances on The Ed Sullivan Show. Twist and Shout, She Loves You, I Want to Hold Your Hand, Til There Was You are a few of the live songs. If you react to recordings, I would recommend She's leaving Home or Let It Be. I enjoyed your reaction, and more Beatles.

As someone who was in choir in middle school and high school so I can easily hear and tell if some notes are higher than others and if a singer is singing in his chest voice, the crazy thing about this song is Paul's belting those lyrics noticeably higher than Freddy Mercury in Don't Stop Me Now and Bohemian Rhapsody.

As previously mentioned, Paul practiced this song for a week to shred that vocal. He really wanted a caustic, desperate sound. I interpret the song as Paul talking to John, saying not to leave him (and the Beatles). "I'll never let you down", a direct reference to John's "Don't Let Me Down". Also, "I'll never make it alone". All leading to the breakup of the Beatles.

Had Led Zeppelin not been formed and recorded their first album prior to this song's release I would have sworn that they based their early sound on it, especially Robert Plant's singing style. In any case the Beatles were not a rock group. They were many rock groups, a new one almost with the release of each new album, with many sounds, most of which they have invented or perfected.

The Beatles were not just 'one' of anything - they had mutiple songwriters, they were multi-instumentalists - they had played together for many years so they were 'tight' - they were signed by a classically trained producor (George Martin) who not only gave them freedom to expand, but also brought totally new ellements to their recordings - and they had a technical team, at Abbey Road, who were skilled enough and willing enough, to realise some truly extraordinaty, ground breaking sounds and recording techniques.

Paul's last truly great song recorded with the Beatles. Johns' guitar work is outstanding. John loved Oh Darling! and felt he should have sung it instead of Paul. George's bass playing is impeccable while Ringo's drumming is as steady as the North Star. In 1970, had the Beatles stayed together and toured to promote their Let It Be film, I suspect Oh! Darling would have been included in their set list. Great reaction itsprincess, RNB

Your reaction put a huge smile on my face. It was so fun and I grew up with the Beatles and I'm into all kinds of music and I played in bands my whole life and really I know a lot about a lot of different kinds of music but still, they remain one of my favorites. I absolutely adore Oh Darling. Not just Paul's amazing vocals but John's in there too and just the guitar work and Ringo on the drums and Paul on the bass, it just sounds so good. They were hard to categorize because they were just the Beatles And they also evolved quite rapidly over their very short decade-long run. But if you really want to hear something where Paul gets into some more intense screaming than this, Helter Skelter is often regarded as one of the earliest precursors to heavy metal. It came out in the late 1960s.

People tend to be very rigid on what they consider to be a musical genre like 'Rock' these days. The 60s and early 70s were a period of free musical experimentation where the rules of popular music writing, recording, touring and marketing were all still being made up on the spot. Everyone was being influenced by and 'digging' each-others music, borrowing, trading and even stealing musical ideas, and they were generally being allowed to do whatever the hell they wanted. Hence you get a lot of groundbreaking 'classic' albums and unusual songs from a hugely diverse array of artists, each with their own unique thing that's very 'them'. I doubt the Beatles would have considered themselves a 'rock' band as we understand it today, they were just doing 'their' thing.
@braudabo
@braudabo 3 месяца назад
Of course they defined themselves as a rock band. Maybe initially more as a rock'n'roll band, because that's their basis. Hard rock and uptempo tracks were always part of their discography.
@cuebj
@cuebj 3 месяца назад
The Beatles and Stones have said very clearly that it was pop, not 'rock'. Up to mid 1960s, it was classical, jazz, folk, pop. Rock 'n roll was a subgenre of pop. Keith Richards, especially, says how 'rock', as a distinct genre, was coined in later 1960s... while he preferred 'to roll'.
@cuebj
@cuebj 3 месяца назад
@@braudabo They didn't. They were pop of which rock ' roll was a subgenre. They were a rock 'n roll group through Hamburg and up to Brian Epstein advised them that leathers and rock 'n roll music would only get them so far. So they transformed and put on suits and wrote and performed the best pop music ever for teenage girls and the rest of the world bought into it. Rock as a word and genre didn't appear till the later 1960s to describe the later developments of blues into heavy blues. Of course, The Beatles went on to make some of the best rock as well as the best pop music since they had already been the toughest punky rock 'n roll group in the toughest performing environment of the Indra and Kaiserkeller clubs in Hamburg

@itsprincess- The Beatles are by far the greatest group ever. Paul killed it on Oh Darling and this is one of there best songs. I wouldnt say you could label them really mainly a rock group bc when they first came to the U.S in 64 they did alot of pop stuff with songs like she loves you and I want to hold your hand. Only later did they get into stuff like rock, Psychedelic and so fourth. Check out there song Hey Jude.
@patticrichton1135
@patticrichton1135 3 месяца назад
Their songs in 1963/64, '65 and ''66 WERE called "Rock n' Roll" songs by other artists at the time that didn't always appeal to most teenagers and mostly loved by our parents, were "Pop" songs (which is actually just short for "POPULAR" anything you heard on the radio and which sold well on records were "Popular songs" SO even then you could also say they were a "pop/ rock n' roll group. Music in the '50s (when rock n' roll started creeping in) and '60s was a combination of genres, it wasn't so categorized as rigidly as it seems to be now. That's why the Beatles AND other groups in the '60s were each a mixture of styles. I know because I was a teenager during that period and the radio or our record player was ALWAYS on in our house when I was growing up. PLUS my Dad was a musician who played 4 instruments, so I was exposed to all sorts of music styles from the day I was born.

Only a few decades ago, the term "rock" encompassed musical styles from practically the entire spectrum. There was hard rock, folk rock, prog rock, jazz rock, heavy metal, art rock, soft rock, country rock, rockabilly, etc etc etc. It was all some kind of "rock." There was a time when it seemed that popular music would continue to progress and expand. Suffice it to say, that most definitely did not happen.

The thing with "rock" is it can mean 1000 things. The "rock" is almost more like an attitude (and usually needs loud guitars/drums). They were one of the originators but messed around with most the genres (most the good rocks bands do). Same with r&b/hip-hop, all my favorite ones mess around with the genres a bit. Outkast, Kendrick, Frank Ocean etc etc. Still love my old school Stevie Wonder though.

When they first became noticed in North Ameica, with their two big hits "She Loves You" and "I Want to Hold Your Hand", I didn't think that much of them. They sounded like noise to me; the Number 2 hit at the time, prevented from reaching Number 1 by these two, "You Don't Own Me" by Lesley Gore - that sounded like music to me instead. That's probably because I was a child, not a teenager with angst and all that, at the time. But later on, they recorded hits I was able to admit were real music - "Michelle" and "Yesterday", for example. As for Elvis Presley... people of my era are familiar with the story about how the Ed Sullivan Show wouldn't show his hips gyrating as he sang, as that was considered too risque. I was reminded of that story when I watched Alizee Jacotey singing "J'en ai marre"... rather more interesting to watch in my provincial view.

More like the industry likes Autotune so all they need is a face to pose and mouth and have some sort of sound come out of their mouths that the tech can convert into something resembling singing and playing. Twas ever thus but, in the old days, the pretty boys and girls who couldn't sing or play were fronts for professional session musicians. Even The Byrds, first records were played by the Wrecking Crew with Roger (Jim) McGuinn, who had been a very young session player, allowed to play and get very positive comments from The Crew. WC also played the Beach Boys records with Good Vibrations stitched together from scores of pieces of tape. Cinema did much the same with real singers voices mimed by the pretty star, unless Julie Andrews or Judy Garland. The really big thing The Beatles did was insist, as callow youths at their first session, that they did their own thing and were, effectively, prepared to knock their last chance on the head if they couldn't do their own thing.

Completely agree. There was a time when singers could really sing.

Paul could sing extremely high and soft, he could roar like in this song, and he could do everything between. He was an amazingly talented musician. I think John and often George wrote better songs, but nobody could touch Paul for all around talent.

As good as this song is, in Beatles World, it's really in the bottom half of their library.
