@@fragel32 I always find it funny when someone says something offensive and then says "no offence". Also, I don't think you're being fair. That wasn't the best clip for getting a feel for what Ali G was about. It didn't get much of a chance to develop and coming at this fresh without any prior knowledge would have been confusing for any generation. If they'd have started with a better clip then I bet they'd have got it immediately. I'm a Gen Xer by the way and I remember when we were criticised by older generations in the same way. It was nonsense back then and it's nonsense now.

He's a character played by Sacha Baron Cohen. Started as small sketches on the 11 o'clock show(also notable for breaking Ricky Gervais), then got his own show + did a movie all playing Ali G. Also known for Borat, Dictator, Bruno + more, all recommended. Absolute troll and legend of the modern era. He really did have balls of steel for most of what he did.

Yea he is the guy that played Borat and he played the french guy in that movie taladega nights. And he played that character Bruno. He is really good at playing characters and trolling real people. He does interviews as Ali G with real politicians and very serious people and it is sooo funny. Can you please do more? There is one where he interviews religious leaders. And one where he interviews a guy that has an animal sanctuary. And one where he interviews scientists. Please please do more soon. I love your channel. ❤

He is a White, Jewish London Comedian/Actor named Sacha Baron Cohen and "Ali G." was his first major successful character. He played many others including "Borat"

He's the original king of trolling, long before youtube and social media, The people he interviews are 100% never in on it lol, nobody expected to get trolled back when these were filmed because it wasn't even a thing, He turned up with a big tv crew they had no idea.

HERE is the answer: "n 2003, cheeky Ali G managed to bag a chat with American liberal progressive feminist author Naomi Wolf. After just a few short minutes, the interview ended in absolute chaos after Sacha bravely shared some of Ali G’s controversial ideas on feminism. Naomi stormed off set and later branded Sacha a “racist” for impersonating a black interviewer. She also threatened legal action which, she says, led the producers to drop her appearance from Ali G’s new American series.

It's not a skit. Ali G (played by actor Sacha Baron Cohen) is making a funny and ironic interview, but the other people are real and don't know that Ali G is just a role.

Context: Its a comedy set up where Sacha B Cohen plays Ali G - an Asian character who has adopted and identifies as a Afro/Caribbean hiphop character. The premise is that he's a Kids TV presenter discussing serious issues with experts. He plays it as being stupid,therefore trying her patience. The Ali G character does this to all his interviewees. The lady in the video is a real author feminist. Sacha Baron Cohen adopts a similar approach with his other characters e.g. Borat, a 'TV reporter from Kazakhstan'.

The character is based on certain groups of urban British Asian youths in the 90s/2000s (in the UK) who embraced certain aspects of Afro/Caribbean inspired Rap street culture, to appear reactionary and fashionable. They often play a mix of rap/drum 'n bass music loudly from their souped up/blinged cars, adopted the idioms, style of dress and way of speaking, distancing themselves from their strict Asian culture and upbringing while out (until they returned home) - this is what Sacha BC is parodying with Ali G. The humour lies in his repeated attempts to come across as a cool guy, but backfires when his pretence drops when mentioning his family (Uncle Jamal), where he lives (Staines, close to the Asian communities in West London and Heathrow Airport) etc. Layer on that he's meant to be a kids TV presenter relating to disaffected youth about important issues, and seeking out experts to (politely) enlighten him is what creates this comedic recipe of dismay, cringe, and unitended embarrassment for his interviewees and us watching at home. 😄

Tough to watch…..genius comedy but also pretty obviously comedy totally going their heads….such a small change of perspective or realisation to be in stitches. Just find it hard to comprehend these two can’t work out he’s a comedian after two sentences.
