What means gender diversity and gender identity nowadays? And what does gender diversity include? What if you are born with a body that does not meet society’s typical idea of ‘man’ or ‘woman’? Gender diversity has become more and more important and discussed. That´s why we are investigating the world of gender diversity, identity and sexual diversity.
You’ll no longer hear the announcement 'ladies and gentlemen' when travelling through a train station in the Netherlands. This has been replaced with 'dear passengers', to include all travelers: ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls and everyone who does not feel comfortable within that traditional binary. Before we are born we are already put in boxes. From then on, we are socialized to understand the world through so-called ‘false oppositions’ that are like the sun and the moon, as if they cannot both be present at the same time: if you are a man you are not a woman, and vice versa. In this documentary, we explore the future of sex and gender with people who do not fit their assigned ‘box’ or who do not wish to be pushed into one.
With the introduction of civil registration around 1800, a strict classification in 'male' and 'female' was made official in Europe. Specific rights and obligations were linked to each of these two categories, such as inheritance law or conscription. But accepted norms do change: in 2017, the Dutch chain store HEMA got rid of labels as 'boys' or 'girls' from children’s clothing. Slowly but surely we find more gender neutral bathrooms. Facebook offers users a choice of 71 gender identities and the possibility to define your own. And we also see some change in traditionally strictly regulated domains like sports: in the US Patricio Manuel is the first transgender boxer to fight professionally in the male division.
In school we learned that a man is born with XY chromosomes and a woman with XX chromosomes, but the reality is not all that black and white: all kinds of combinations of chromosomes, genes and hormone levels are possible, with infinite variations in sex characteristics.
People who are born with a body that does not meet society’s typical idea of ‘man’ or ‘woman’ are intersex. They often experience taboo and are exposed to ‘normalizing’ medical treatments because they do not fit society’s understanding of what a 'normal' body is. Belgian supermodel Hanne Gaby is intersex and she is proud of it. She fights for recognition of intersex people and against secrecy and operations on healthy children. She knows from experience that these interventions do not help children, but damage them, even before they’ve had a chance to think for themselves about their bodies and gender identity.
What does a future look like in which babies are not registered as either male or female, in which everyone can determine their gender identities for themselves, free from the strict rules that society imposes when it comes to 'masculine' or 'feminine'?
Featuring, amongst others: storyteller and #BLM activist Janaya ‘Future’ Khan, model and intersex activist Hanne Gaby Odiele, boxer Patricio Manuel, artist and poet ALOK Vaid-Menon, Naomie Pieter (co-founder Black Queer & Trans Resistance Netherlands), Annelies Tukker (international policy officer at NNID, Dutch organization for sex diversity), John Swiatek (husband, intersex ally and model) and Jonah Lamers (sociologist and video producer).

vpro documentary there are only 2 genders and its called biology. Gender is based on your chromosomes which are xx or xy. This can not be changed. Time to move back to reality people

The argument against non binary has nothing to do with biology, people who consider themselves non binary are perfectly aware of whatever is between their legs, the idea of non binary is truely centred around language and the binary social constructs our society forces us into.

@@Obs23456 Lol no one's crying here, binary as a social construct is just a fact. Even the argument that there is only "two sexes" falls flat because intersex people exist and they have for millennium, and that's according to your "biology". Even overlooking that, it only takes a glance at Native American (and even Indian) history to see that third gender groups have existed for thousands of years, only to be made outcasts once the British/Europeans invaded and made the people assimilate to their Judeo-Christian values. Even then, just looking at recent history, we can see the gender binary evolving and changing. It was only in the 1950's that blue was considered a color for girls and pink was a color for boys, but then society changed it's mind when the marketing for kids toys changed. In the 1800 to 1900's baby boys wore dresses. This is not something new, it only seems that way to you because you have been raised in a society saturated in Christian values, and you haven't actually done any proper research into those who came before you. If you are going to try to make a valid point on the internet, I'd suggest getting an education and not blindly insulting anyone who's opinion you disagree with. I can't take you seriously until then.

However you could argue the fact that society could shift someone's perception of reality, but "social construct" could never be a description of someone's reality which is inherently individualistic.)

@@Obs23456 Ok so first off there seems to be some miscommunication here. You don't know what the binary is. The gender binary doesn't actually have anything to do with biology, which was my first argument, but you got non-binary mixed up with intersex (hence your argument about abnormal chromosomes which can apply to intersex but has nothing to do with people who identify as non-binary). The word binary itself means two parts. The gender binary is a classification system created by Judeo-Christian society that puts people into two boxes according to the sex you are assigned at birth, and with that come the social consequences of being whatever sex you are assigned (you also can't ignore the Judeo-Christian influence as the concepts you classify as "normalities" were either created or heavily influenced by Judeo-Christian values, hence your complaints about "society's hedonistic tendencies" but I digress). Now the social consequences attain to the pronouns you use to refer to someone, your outward appearance and personality traits, and this also includes gender roles. Biological men are required by the binary to present themselves as "masculine" e.g. tough, strong etc. And they are to present this with their clothes, physical maintenance and mannerisms. On the other hand biological women are required to be seen as "feminine" e.g. soft, delicate etc. The idea behind the non binary movement is the separation of "masculine" and "feminine" (which are arguably just personailty traits and stylistic expressions) from the the biological sexes, and presenting a new viewpoint of gender as a spectrum. What's between someone's legs should not be means to relegate anyone to a specific role in society, nor should it affect how they act or choose to express themselves style wise. Non-binary people aren't necessarily intersex, in fact there are plenty of people who aren't intersex who identify as non-binary. It simply means that they present themselves non-conforming and use they-them pronouns (pronouns we already use in the English language to identify someone who's gender we're unsure of). Most non-binary people don't even find the gender binary oppressive in of itself, it is only oppressive when it is forced upon everyone. When I mentioned the third gender groups among Eastern and early Western cultures beforehand, it wasn't to convince you that there is "naturally a gazillion genders" it was to explain the idea that this isn't a new thing, and that societies were able to function normally with people who didn't identify with the binary, but they didn't try to destroy the binary either. This isn't about biology in the grand scheme of things, not really, if you met someone who looked like a boy, dressed like a boy, acted like a boy but had a vagina, then if you didn't know what his genitalia actually was, then you'd consider him a boy. It's about how society treats people, based on what they *think* is between your legs. I'm glad that you are trying to learn things on the internet, good for you! However while the internet is a great tool for learning as it holds a wealth of information, I'd suggest to also try expanding your research outside of technology. Open up some history books, and you'll the baby photos taken of the royal and aristocratic families of old, and you'll see these baby boys in dresses (not draped in cloths, full on dresses with petticoats). You can educate yourself on so much more than a pixilated screen. You seem like some 14 year old who thinks cringe compilations are funny, but since you have actually attempted to put forward some semblance of an opinion, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you are not some ignorant child who wants lord their "supiror intellect and logic" against "the retards" and that you actually wish to learn and expand upon your knowledge. So go out, take a step back from the keyboard and learn that the human species is so incredibly complex and constantly evolving. I wish you luck. (Also I don't fall into the binary, so you're definitely wrong there buddy)

About 43 min into the video d!ocumentary we hear about "Gender Registration", a deep concern of mine. We have been labeled "Male" or "Female" but nothing inbetween. "Intersex" is not a binary category. People who are intersex simply can not be classified as "Straight", "Gay", or "Lesbian" regardless of whomever they partner with since intersex people are both or neither "Male" and/or "Female". For this reason, inclusion of the "I" within the "LGBTQ" umbrella may be a good thing. Although I personally have reservations about being included in "LGBTQ" umbrella, many of these reservations are gradually beginning to dwindle in light of a global awareness of the existence and nature of the Intersex Community. It is my belief that as Global Awareness of the "LGBTQIA+" umbrella becomes ever more INCLUSIVE, the concerns of my Intersex Community, especially the dastardly manipulation of New Born Intersex Babies, will be evermore brought to light and dealt with accordingly!

The comedy really writes itself with these types. On the one hand they want to get rid of the rigid gender/sex binary, but on the other hand if you are a gay girl who is not effeminate, you must be a boy. Caster Semenya being forced to undergo "sex tests" and hormone therapy really sickens me. She's a woman. Just as there are women who surpass the average height for women, yet are still women, there are women who have higher testosterone than the average woman, and yeah, they're still women.

I think the debate is supposedly biological sex vs masculine/ feminine gender. My question is how do we account for gender differences in the BRAIN that are not evident in the body's physical characteristics. On tests like brain scans, is it true that there are discernable differences, as I've heard someone say? And if so, what causes that? If that's a fact, it should quiet a whole lot of endless bickering about gender and transgenderism vs intersex conditions. Hope it helps further understanding and discovery. I find it fascinating, not threatening ❤

@A M. What you're talking about are gender roles, not gender itself. If gender wasn't innate then whatever your parents raised you to be, no matter what your sex was, you would adapt to without protest or dysphoria. Gender roles are what society expects from their ideals of men and women, but gender itself is something you know innately.

P. Taylor there’s a difference between criticism and hate. Before I watched this documentary I thought the whole idea of gender diversity and there being more genders than male, female, and transgender bogus. But the fact of the matter is, how these people choose to live their lives doesn’t bother me. It’s the people who are so ignorant to change that they feel threatened by a man in a dress that need to grow up. We live in a world that’s defined by what box you fall into, and for some it’s easy to check that box. For others they spend their whole lives trying to figure out what box they fit into. Sure it’d be better if there were no boxes at all, but that’s idealistic. So why not create a new box? Why are some people allowed to comfortably live in their own box, and others are told to conform?What’s so wrong with human beings feeling accepted within their newfound box? I think the growing up part needs to be done by the people who only see the world in two categories.

There’s two genders. Anyone else claiming anything else is just a belief. The same type of belief that a Buddhist or Christian would have. It’s an ideology. And you are free to believe that, but just like with other beliefs. No one has to believe what you believe. Just because I don’t believe in Buddhism doesn’t mean I’m afraid or hate Buddhist. The same with this gender ideology. Just because I don’t believe in this gender theory. Doesn’t mean I’m afraid or hate you for believing in gender theory. You just can’t force me to believe what you believe. It’s not a matter of respect. I will always refer to a man as a man and a women as a women.

Actually, the sex you develop as depends on the strength of a hormonal signal. Because hormones can exist in an infinite range of values between 0 and 100 percent, sex itself isn't binary, but can in principle exist anywhere on a continuous spectrum ranging all the way from fully male to fully female. Admittedly, most people fall fairly close to one end of that spectrum or the other (which is why we have the illusion of a binary), however there are a minority where the hormonal signal was intermediate between male and female levels, or high for some parts of their prenatal development and low in others. In that situation, you can end up as a person with a mixture of male and female characteristics, who doesn't necessarily fit tidily into a male or female category. Intersex (and transgender, which is really a subset of intersex where the brain is the main organ affected) people are real, it's just that we've largely been rendered invisible through a combination of forced infant genital surgeries, and social pressures to not visibly be a person "between the sexes".

@@kake12 Even using a purely genital based definition of intersex, around 0.5 percent of the population in Western countries are born intersex. It's just that the medical system reclassifies most cases of what are actually intersex as something else, e.g. "hypospadias". Also, genitals aren't the only part of the body that have sexually dimorphism. The skeletal structure and musculature are sexually dimorphic, as are the endocrine system and the brain. All these things undergo their critical development during their own unique "window" in prenatal development, which doesn't necessarily overlap with the one for genitals (weeks 7 to 12 after conception). The true number of younger people who've undergone some mixture of male and female development is probably several percent of the population in Western countries, thanks to the way the use of hormones in pregnancy has been recklessly promoted by the pharmaceutical industry.

"In school we learned that a man is born with XY chromosomes and a woman with XX chromosomes," In fact, that's an oversimplification that leaves out a couple of crucial steps in the middle. All being XX or XY actually does is determine whether you develop ovaries or testicles. Everything from that point forward depends on hormones. In the presence of testicular hormones (and assuming you can respond to those hormones), you'll develop as male. Otherwise you develop as female. That's why it's possible to have XY women and XX men, and people whose development has left them with a mixture of male and female characteristics. This dependence on hormones means that exposure to external hormones (or hormone mimicking chemicals) can cause the process of sexual development to go spectacularly wrong. Something I'm trying to bring wider public attention to, is that the medical use of hormones in pregnancy is no exception in that regard, and that there's plenty of us in the older age bracket who ended up gender blended through prenatal pharmaceutical hormone exposure. www.quora.com/What-causes-a-person-to-be-transgender/answer/Hugh-Easton-1

this plus the X and Y chromosomes were never going to be called sex chromosomes to begin with. They were gonna be called idiochromosomes or heterochromosomes and this was because it was focusing on the DIVISION of the chromosomes and meiosis not the traits these chromosomes carried.

LG and B are sexualities, I don't think that trans people should be lumped in with us. Gender identity is not sexual orientation. Also, there are only two genders, anything else is an idea, a mental construct. If I focused on thoughts about being a woman repeatedly, I would eventually feel like a woman. Thinking generates feelings, feelings generate thinking. All these made up genders are not a thing and I don't agree with any non binary issue being a civil right. Be whoever you want to be, if you want to be the opposite sex - no problem. It's easy to identify and call you by your pronoun - but when you have some sort of ambiguous and non sensical identity and then try to force me into referring to you by it, not happening. I've encountered men, who dressed masculine, acted masculine freak out when I would refer to them with any kind of masculine pronoun.... It's really more of a self esteem issue, with some bordering on mental illness. Letting a pronoun affect you emotionally to the extent I have seen not only in my experience but in the media and various other accounts is nothing short of alarming. This is not how an emotionally healthy individual acts.

Without the binary you cannot identify with the other. No binary, no man. No binary, no woman. These people aspire to the aesthetic ideal of the other, defined by the binary that nature imposes on us and which they readily identify with and reject simultaneously. This is why the woman pretending to be a man starts with “ hello people, you look beautiful”, it’s an aestheticism. The mutilation, a form of suffering in the name of an ideal. One could go as far as saying that it is in fact a type of worship of the binary, since in the act of suffering against the other, towards the aesthetic ideal, it actually confirms that ideal. They can never be male enough or female enough. The pursuit towards the ideal is never complete. When they realise that it is unattainable, suicide becomes their relief.

Im transgender myself and everyday i keep fighting the feeling of wanting to become a beautiful woman, have had this problem since i was 4 years old!!! drives me crazy , i get so angry in my life because here in England we are expected by society as a person born male to be tough and unkind but im not like that i want to wear the pretty clothes do my makeup and live as a woman , ive only just come out after all these years and am taking baby steps but hopefully will get the right to live as i want to live one day, i swear if not i will take my case to Parliament as its not fair, we have human rights to do what we want to our body and express ourselves as we wish.

It is easy to understand and also possible to jump out of the window, from very high building. Fly may be beautiful. In that very moment man is beyond binary being alive or dead. There is a good reason for how society defined gender. This ideological document would like to abolish it for the sake of tiny minority that cannot fit in. I don’t identify myself as transgender. I am a female and I have two children. I was married. However, I notice from time to time how people I don’t know would adamantly defined me, while out in the community. I have issues with hairs on my face, arms, and legs. However, when I look at videos like this it open my eyes about how I can relate. I am glad I did not have to conform because my appearance was not extreme and I am comfortable with the gender I am born with.

They're all so beautiful... you know i think this is great becasue I think Ive always thought of intersex etc as like an 'unfortunate' genetic anomaly: but with the media push on trans people Intersex people really do exist as an argument from an religious back ground that it really aint what about you got going on down in the never regions- but ones ability to connect as a spiritual being and the sexually the rest will just fall into place; sex is after all an expression of love, if its was soley procreation it wouldn't be so pleasurable!

Gender studies pretty much unanimously disagrees with you, what we deem "natural" isn't removed from our social and cultural lenses. Gender isn't more natural than skyscrapers, but it doesn't mean it isn't observable or experienced. There is no "natural" before the application of our culture lenses, because that is in itself the way we see.
