In March of 2015, we talked about the Sims and Gender Performance. We talked about how-even though The Sims has always been a socially progressive game series-at the time, each player’s semi-autonomous people-pets had to adhere to the gender binary for seemingly no reason other than “because.” Well, as of June 2016... that’s no longer the case! You can still create a MALE or FEMALE sim. But, there are more more options if you want them: you can create a sim with a masculine or feminine frame, with a preference for masculine or feminine clothing. You can decide if your sim can get other sims pregnant, get pregnant themselves, or neither, and… you can choose how your Sim uses the toilet. All of this has been the result of and has in turn generated tons of criticism of The Sims and videogames in general, including the recent Rimworld, which has been the source of a heated discussion about how gender is factored into videogame development. Let us know what you think in the comments below!

I love how identity and politics only exist to some people when they are outside of the norm. Hetero couples is not political but gay is. White people is not political but black is. Male protagonist is not political but a woman is. Weirdly enoght all those "non political" choices are probably choosen because they will reach a bigger acceptance in their market share or in other words, they will resonate better with the political ideals of people
@doriannousias6725

That's not true at all. Trump engaged in Identity Politics when he focused his campaign on the white working class. What you're describing is the effect that the mainstream zeitgeist has on our perceptions. If we lived in a Matriarchy then championing men would be political, because it is more obviously pushing the boundaries of social norms. If people truly want identity to be depoliticized then equal rights for all is the best way to do that

i believe it becomes political when decisions are made to further a cause or agender rather than to purely genderate profit.
@beultra3083

True, but his pandering to Whites was mostly in the context of how they've supposedly been screwed by other groups.
@sunsetsoverlavenderfields
@sunsetsoverlavenderfields 7 лет назад
This is isn't true. The politics are still there when it is a hetero couple or when it is a white man. It just is the norm so it does not attract attention by the mainstream; people don't think twice about it. It is contrary to the norm to have a black, gay, female protagonist in media, and therefore it becomes a sensation, something people notice and are inclined to comment on. When a piece of media only features straight white characters, it blends in with every other piece of media featuring straight white characters. However, the fact that this is the case should show how political it is, and where the balance of power lies right now.
@muleFUEL1
@muleFUEL1 7 лет назад
I agree, and it's sort of like what Mike said, there is always identity politics, but only when it is acknowledged does the politic come to light. I feel this is the problem behind our social justice driven ideals if the 21st century. For so long we have been fine with the norm and felt no reason to question it. But as people began to demand equality for all races, sexes, and sexual orientation (as they rightfully should have) and we brought to light the politics underlying this norm. Men don't necessarily want to overpower women, it is just that is was a social norm for quite some time. Thankfully most people are able to accept this shift now without much fuss, but there will always be a very vocal minority that blows things out of prepositions, on both sides and talking about the issue always brings out the vocal minority which causes huge arguments and even undermine a valid and just point of view.

So at the moment of writing this comment we need +41 different terms to describe gender. At which point does the concept of gender become completely useless, when there are hundreds of different terms to describe any combination of traits or preferences or whatever a "child realizes" he/she/it/.../etc. has?

As someone that works as a journalist and periodically has to bring up her criticisms of media content I feel too often I have to bring up the point originally summed up by Patton Oswalt (I think, I cannot find the exact source anymore, Google only finds my reuse of the line) "Criticism is about helping, not hurting." Yet too many people see criticism as an attack on the piece of media being criticized and by proxy an attack on them for liking it as is. This frustrates me to no end because as this video points out early, we criticize things we clearly enjoyed or put value in because it could be made better; not that we want to tear it down. Some of my favorite movies and games I can criticize till the cows come home but I still adore them. We need to hammer home that criticism is an act of wanting to help.

As someone who is particularly neutral in a lot of discussions on political issues, I have observed that regardless of where you sit on the spectrum, there will always be people who view criticisms of a piece of work as a personal attack and will respond with the likes of "get that negativity out of here" and so on. The divide of ideology in our culture has grown wider because people are unwilling to reflect on their own biases and instead double down on their preconceived notions of how the world around them works (and that is a criticism of both/all sides of any discussion, my own included). I feel that offering more options in games and general media for those who are transgender, don't identify with the gender binary and are not heterosexual, as long as (and I'm trying to word this carefully) it's not the only option is a good thing. I feel the same way toward media that assumes heterosexual as the the default for most, if not all, main characters - having that as the only option in a lot of games is really quite boring. In short, people should stop treating their subjective opinions as facts and stop confusing criticism of a work as a personal attack, or vice versa (calling their personal attack of someone a criticism).

@alicepow593
@alicepow593 7 лет назад
I think you sort of touched on this, but that's why I want to say things about it, but there's definitely this double standard when it comes to classifications like "Identity politics" or "gender" or "race" or "sexual orientation" where we tend to only think of the marginalized group as possessing this quality. Only lgb people have sexual orientations. Only poc have a race. Only women and trans people have a gender. Only the inclusion of diverse identities is identity politics. This of course, ignores the fact that even in a group of straight, white, cis men there are identity politics. There is race. There is gender and sexuality. The only difference is that the identity politics in that group are probably going to align with the previously established norms, so it's unnoticeable. And this is a trend I see a lot. There is a false deflation of the power of privileged people. As long as that straight, white, cis man isn't pointing a gun at your head(and even sometimes when he is) then there can't be any power going on because it doesn't irritate the social order, so nobody notices it. It's like choosing to not vaccinate your child. The parent can see the needle. It is a very real thing that pokes their child and puts something in them that the parent sees as harmful while ignoring the actual violence of a disease that could kill their child. The parent sees their non-vaccinated child as neutral even though that child might be spreading said disease. They see the people insisting on the vaccine as the violent ones because it's so easily recognizable. This is a bit of a messy comment. Thanks if you made it through. I hope it was followable. Also, please only respond if you have actual things to say and not just non-sense, trolly, whining about identity politics. Thanks.

I agree. I see this issue all the time. People say things like that you can't be racist against a white person, while that is clearly categorically incorrect. You can assume priviledge where sometimes there is none, you can assume social status and education and an easier lifestyle, while there are white folks that lead terrible lives, that suffer from depression, from cultural guilt, who drop out of school, who are homeless and destitute and unloved. Yes, you can be racist against a white person. And you can be unaccepting of a cis gender. People don't escape identity politics simply by being in the majority. It's something that affects all of us all the time.
@HannibalHanslaughter

@alicepow593

That's not what I'm saying at all, Alexander. You cannot be racist against a white person. You cannot be cissexist. White people don't have problems because we're white. Cis people don't have problems because they are cis. They might have problems, yes, but not because of their identity. I'm saying that there is identity politics in leaving marginalized people out. If you are a group of white, straight, cis men then there is identity politics in the fact that you have not included any marginalized people. Economic oppression is a thing too, yes, but you will not be homeless because you are white, or cis. There are most homeless people in the US are white, but that's because most people in the US are white. People of color are disproportionally more likely to be homeless. You can be prejudice against anybody, but there is no system of oppression which effects people for being white or cis.
@MissHeathen
@MissHeathen 7 лет назад
+Alexander Beuchat " _People say things like that you can't be racist against a white person, while that is clearly categorically incorrect._ " All those things you listed that white people suffer through had nothing to do with color, lol. You confuse classism with racism, while they work hand-in-hand white people seem to suffer most under classism. The reason you can't be racist towards white people is because they're not being oppressed or discriminated against by their color with Black people collecting some benefit from that racism, making whites feel shame about their white skin, not being able to be seen as a human. White people don't experience that. Racism is also is tool for oppression. This is why Black people don't have political power, economic power, or institutional power equal to white people. White people just aren't experiencing the same life as PoC. Even white a LGBT+ person would still not understand what Black Americans go through on a daily basis. No, you *cannot* be racist to a white person. Being "racist" to a white person will do nothing to harm their white-privilege, and that's what everyone with dark skin wants. Not to be white (while some do bleach their skin in other countries), but to have that privilege to be seen, respected, protected, and loved even. If you read books written by Black scholars you'd know this. 14 year old Black girls know this basic info.

I think it's reasonable for people to not want to engage in that sort of discourse, but I think it's equally unreasonable to shut down that discourse on the internet. I think the term now used is "conflicting access needs", when people need different things from their spaces and these needs conflict. Some people want to critique a game, and some people want to play something without others telling them the act of them playing it is problematic. I guess the solution is to keep yourself from clicking articles that you already know you don't want to read, and to reasonably label discourse so that people can choose whether to engage in your conversation or not.

Identity politics usually infers that division is intended in order to pander to a group. Your definition makes the term useless and fails to identify the truth behind the charge leveled by at least half the electorate on the liberal political machine in the US and elsewhere against typically more collectivist portion thereof. Identity politics are divisive in nature and typically involve an us against them mentality and cause the other side to have to defend themselves. I don't appreciate the deflection or your dispersing it into the populace, lol, though I am not at all surprised.

Did you know the group of black folks the Dems are most struggling with is working class blacks? It's interesting, though, you think the conservatives feel threatened, this is not typical of US conservatives as they hold a vast majority of the firearms... When they defend themselves, you call them afraid? PLEASE, attempt to leave your bias and see what truth they're believing it that could bridge the gap. Though some differences are fairly intractable. Do they hate gays or do they agree with many gay people that baker's shouldn't be the target of anti-discrimination lawsuits that look like money grabs? I mean, which one is it? The media says if you want to keep Christian bakeries from being treated like piggy banks of wedding presents for gay couples you hate gay people. Doesn't that seem like a false dichotomy? Are you even trying to be fair about their perspectives?

Your systems failed so hard they lead to such racism and racial division, not only, but your economic policies fail so hard you need to force them on the rural folk in order that you can use the Federal Reserve to bail yourselves out, lol. I owe my lack of losing things to cargo pants and shorts. Criticize them all you want, I have kept track of my wallet, pencils, pens, phones, and much more by having those pockets on the sides. Stuff always fell out of my upper pockets, that just didn't happen with cargo. Also, I am a male. I would say that the article pointing out how the code was written was a little witch hunty. Critiquing something like the sims is not the same as critiquing a single person project. The sims has a team that is going to look at whats being said and then bring that up to a separate team to talk about changing whatever needs to be changed. When we look at the same or similar critiques being pointed at a single person team he now has to worry about bug fixing and making the game playable (since people have already payed and he feels obligated to at least make the game playable and most likely update regularly) and also commenting and trying to say why he wrote what he wrote to a most likely angry vocal minority while also going through his code and figuring it all out. This isn't a team of community managers talking to a team of programmers. This is one guy whose name is most likely out there getting hounded by people to do what they want while also not understanding the work that has to go in to make certain things work. When you yell at the sims team no one gets actually yelled at. You are yelling at an entity. When you yell at the single dev of a game he is doing from his own heart you are actually yelling at a human. People need to see that there is a person behind every indie project and not be so hard on them for making something that obviously people are enjoying even with its current bug/feature/whatever it happens to be.
@pbsideachannel
@pbsideachannel 7 лет назад
Are you saying the creators of small, though noteworthy, projects are beyond criticism because it might hurt their feelings? Because if so, I have a bunch of YT commenters for you to chat with :) I also disagree with the description of the piece as anything close to "yelling". I thought it was pretty even handed and didn't smack of emotional appeal at all. Maybe there's something I missed?
@medicdroid2012
@medicdroid2012 7 лет назад
PBS Idea Channel No of course not. No one is beyond criticism. But I can that because of this article people will have gone too far in how they went about talking about this. I wasn't describing the piece as yelling but the talk around the piece. iirc the piece was well written and had alot of solid points. I am more talking about some of the comments, tweets, and probably messages he got taking it too far. Turning a conversation into a one sided yelling match with most likely someone being compared to hitler as the internet does sometimes. .
@anja8595
@anja8595 7 лет назад
I agree that it should be up to a creator whether they want to constantly rework and improve an existing creation or moving the criticism on to their next project. It'd be rude to expect them to add a feature just because you want them to. But say the problem was the game crashed at certain points? Would you consider it a witch hunt if players pointed it out to the developer? Would it be fair to expect players to pay for that game if that bug ruined the experience for them? I don't know. I guess as a creator, you create something hoping it's good enough for engagement, and as a consumer you choose what you want to engage with. Then a creator can choose to reflect on criticism and implement it (e.g. Stardew Valley is a 1-person team who acts on criticism) or not if they so choose. Choosing not to do so has consequences. Choosing to do so has consequences.

I think in this case it's more of a case of you can't expect the game devs to consider everything and that is usually solved with criticism. The issue here is that the current mood in these types of topics are pre-heated and more often than not start with "no cargo pants for women, OMG cis-men controlling the media!" and less "Hey can cargo pants be included for women? We like cargo pants too."

I think that one of the problems of criticism focused on identity politics is that, while they can uncover political issues, they more often than not become victims of their own criticism. I've been thinking about the infamous Polygon articles on the Witcher 3 series. If I understand correctly, the article argued on the base of diversity from an American perspective of how diversity is, denying the Polish roots of the game's lore. I don't know, there's something strictly fishy about identity politics having to define an other from their own view.

Considering my sheltered religious upbringing that realization helped me immensely with my sexual self-discovery, and I can see where there would have been a lot of confusion in my late childhood otherwise when trying to make sense of other feelings and actions that had been going on the entire time.

I have a question about gender identity. I'm not very informed on this stuff so this question might sound very dumb, and I'm talking about people who don't identify as male or female. My question is, what's the difference between being not identifying as either male or female and just not following gender norms? If someone was born a woman, has female body parts, doesn't change their name, and likes to be called using female pronouns, how is that different from being a woman? There are plenty of women who don't wear dresses, so that's not important. People use the term "special snowflake" a lot, but it does seem like if you don't change anything about yourself and you act exactly the same you just want to be a part of the "LGBTQ club."

Gender is defined by what the culture identifies as "what women are supposed to do" (feminity) and "what men are supposed to do" (masculinity). If a biological woman doesn't act within the traditional cultural definition of femininity, then she is less feminine. This is a scale, so it isn't simply feminine or non-feminine. But WHAT you do (your gender performance) can be different than HOW you identify (your gender identity). So one could hypothetically go through their day-to-day life not adhering to their traditional cultural gender scripts, but at the same time not identifying as another gender (a misalignment between performance and identity). This is fine because we should respect people's identity choices. So, regardless of how someone performs their gender, if they do not identify as being gender non-conforming, then that is fine.
@EpicBexy
@EpicBexy 7 лет назад
Gender identity is more of a spectrum. All people are individuals, that is a known fact, but that means our brains can be neurologically wired differently, that means all of us have different brains :) . Nonbinary people (those who identify themselves as neither gender or don't mind being a bit of both) simply have a different thinking and view of the self while those against the gender norms can be so dang hetero/binary when it comes to identity ("I am a manly man" or "I'm so girly") but don't limit themselves or refrain from activities that is assigned to a gender, like sports, diaper change or makeup .
@OutOfNamesToChoose
@OutOfNamesToChoose 7 лет назад
TrevorSpace Animation I'm also trying to get my head around it. It almost seems like all the genders outside of LGBTQ are virtually non-existant outside of the internet (or in daily life anyway), though I suppose when you subcategorise a lot, the subategories become significantly smaller. As strange as these groups would be to me if I were to meet any, I'd try to be accepting; However, to expect the average person like me to learn about each individual group is too far, seeing as most learning is done through repetition in daily life. What I absolutely despise, however, is the confusion between sex (i.e. genetically determined) and gender (an identity). It brings about the further question: to people who lie outside of an LGBT+ individual's social circle, what further benefit is there of identifying yourself as anything beyond male or female? I can only understand it being important within the field of law.
@YuGiBrohhh
@YuGiBrohhh 7 лет назад
TrevorSpace Animation If you're actually trying to learn something I can attempt to explain. There are some gender neutral people out there that choose to be gender neutral, like myself, and those that never really found attachment to either gender while growing up. What both groups have in common is the idea of questioning what society exactly wants of us. When someone thinks I am a woman, suddenly a bunch of assumptions are made. They think they know what genitals I have, that I like pink, that maybe I like Justin Bieber, that I like makeup. Many people assume that I am in school to become a teacher or to study gender, even though I am in science. Being a woman suddenly puts me into a box that I did not ask to be in. By rejecting gender, not only does it cause unendingly satisfying confusion in those trying to shove me into their stereotype boxes, it also frees me from the responsibilities placed on me to be feminine. I don't want to wear makeup, I don't want to look pretty, I don't want to like pink. I want to do cool science shit and make cosplay. Would it be a lot easier to just stay with female pronouns? Sure. But the point is that I want to disrupt society's idea of binary gender and in doing so I also get to live free of the expectations placed on me to be a lady.

The developer of RimWorld did point out that there was a bug relating to the "who hits on whom" part. Specifically, bisexual men are currently (erroneously) absent. But other than that: "Characters in RW aren't attracted to anyone. There is no player-facing "attraction" mechanic or statistic that the player can perceive at all. What these numbers really are are probability factors on romance interactions, which is a rather different thing." (and the probabilities are based on "quick research to get some ballpark numbers, simplified them to be implementable and easy to read, and put them into the game"). Just like DF, RimWorld is about emergent gameplay. And a single bug (or out-dated statistic) can result in a perceived really-big-problem. If females don't get sad when rebuffed, or if intelligent males can't learn that "no means no" or that the lesbian doesn't want to partner up with you, there's a bug (or "the men of RimWorld are designed to be giant dicks").

I have two roommates that I care a lot about and we consume a great deal of media together. What I've found over time is that we're all fairly critical, but that we don't necessarily agree in our conclusions. This has spun countless debates and arguments between us, some of which lead us to dismiss one another's opinions and others that have ended in reluctant agreement. The love we have for one another and for the media we're passionate about has, beyond all other factors I think, determined the outcome of these discussions. Sometimes we find each others criticism indignant or unfounded, other times we observe it but consider it inconsequential. Yet it seems that whenever we cede to one another, it's because we value each other and we know that the passion that we feel /must/ be genuine. Online, where many debates are anonymous and spontaneous, it can be difficult to relate to someone's criticism without a defensive stance. We assume much of what we don't know about each other, most often that a critic must despise or not care for the media. This isn't often the case, since why would anyone imagine fixing something they didn't value in the first place?
@MegaMitchZero
@MegaMitchZero 7 лет назад
While it is important to point out the politics that exist within media (because I agree, that it is impossible to separate the two as any creative expression or art is going to contain attributes influenced by the creator's world view), when people state that they don't like their video games or movies getting "political" it has more to do with the fact that those people view media as an escape from the harsh realities of politics and the confrontation and divisive nature of any exchange of differing ideas. The political nature of the games they play are not immediately obvious and it is so much more comfortable not to think about or over-analyse. Ignorance is bliss as they say, and indulging in a little bit of that sort of ignorance can be comforting. Politics pull people out of that comfort zone. Like, for example, when Mario stomps on turtle shells, we are enjoying the journey it is taking to rescue the princess. But, if someone comes out and says "the male hero rescuing the female victim is an overdone trope", certain people who just want to play the games for the sake of having some fun will get defensive. They may not even disagree with the idea being stated, but it's bringing an over-analytical nature to something which to a general mass audience is merely supposed to be some harmless fun. Of course, on the opposite end of that spectrum, are people who will find problems in literally everything even where none exist. The world would be a better place if people could just say, "this is what I have observed from my personal experience" and people could respond "well, I disagree for these reasons" and people could engage in discussion from then on without being condescending to each other. But in a world in which bad ideas can cause legitimate harm to real world people, it is completely understandable why people get defensive, and some people even get a bit verbally hostile. So, politics cannot be separated from media. However, media should not prioritize political messages (unless that is their specific purpose).

MegaMitch If one is content to simply jump on turtles, why then would one read an article or watch a video clearly labeled as a critique of the character that jumps on turtles, instead of continuing to jump on turtles? I argue that they wish to form a better understanding of what they are doing, and be better able to navigate the discussion around it. . If we want our society to change, then certain conversations, systems and behaviors need to be challenged (critiqued). Whether individuals wish to participate in that conversation is up to them. I don't think anyone enjoys having their behavior challenged, but there is a personal responsibility in the degree of one's response. It is not reasonable to be violent, verbal or otherwise, to criticism.

In a game like The Sims, I can understand that gender roles and identity can play an important part in player experience since its basically a soap opera of gibberish speaking virtual people and made to appeal to a very wide and diverse audience. But in a game like Rimworld, a small strategy game developed by one man, where the goal is to survive on a alien planet I don't particularly see gender roles as a top priority feature. The article was written in a way that made it seem like the dev did what he did on purpose which may or may not be true.. Frankly, its a nonissue and if something like that gets in your way of enjoying game then I would very much urge you to reconsider your priorities in life. But then again, I'm a cis-gendered white male so what do I know.

A tangential relation to the topic at hand, but the same issue occurs in the artistic community, especially photography. I'm a member of a few photography groups, some actively encourage (and even require) constructive criticism of shared photos, and I find that more and more, those who share their photos are unable to understand that criticism is with the view to help foster improvement. When I see a very average photo, and all people do is at best say nothing, and at worst say 'lovely shot' when it really is not, all we wind up with is a person who finds that their shot is as good as the status quo, or not in need of improvement. This results in the skill of photography being watered down, and eventually people who are truly good at what they do being accused of Photoshopping.
@shirosenshiesq
@shirosenshiesq 7 лет назад
It's pretty clear cut when it happens, never subtle. Someone posts an average photo, someone posts some constructive feedback, and the immediate responses include variations of saying that: - they/the client liked it, - that they didn't ask for feedback (whether in a 'feedback mandatory' forum or not), - accusations of being nasty (typically, even the politest, most well written constructive feedback is seen as 'nasty' by these people), - that they're a professional (i.e., have been paid, thereby construing that payment for work is equivalent to quality of work), - accusations that you have never shared photos (implying you don't have a right to share feedback), - that your own photography isn't a level to warrant your ability to provide feedback (even though it always, ALWAYS is better), Plus a few others. If you go into their Facebook business profiles (and there's always one), you can see a stream of terribly average photos, all with comments no more detailed than 'lovely shot' or 'very nice' or something along those lines. My theory is that a person gets it into their head that they can take up photography, so they either buy the cheapest DSLR they can afford or what they perceive to be the most expensive looking one, don't understand the basics enough to learn it properly, and stick to auto mode. Family and friends, who are so used to seeing mobile phone photos on Facebook, see the immediate quality hike that comes with a DSLR's sensor (even on automatic) and assume that it's as high-quality as it's possible to get (simply by virtue of not knowing better) and, being friends and family to an already narcissistic person, at best just praise them out of loyalty, and at worst praise them to avoid conflict. Next thing we know, our photographer has an inflated sense of self, and as soon as they join the real world and share their photos among true professionals and experts, the bubble bursts and we find conflict. The other issue is that too many of these people are also setting up safe spaces for shitty photographers to pat each other on the back about their terrible works of art, with zero tolerance policies on 'negative comments,' which are mostly always just constructive, polite criticisms to help improve people, but deemed to be negative if they're anything short of blind praise. By contrast, a person receptive to feedback will either thank you for your thoughts, sometimes make those alterations and reshare to show you, or explain politely why those alterations aren't part of the scope (for example, one sharer took a photo of a kangaroo in a field, in B&W, and I suggested that colour may look better since it was a low-key photo. They responded that they agreed, but the competition was specifically for black and white photography of a native animal). As for tracking, only way I'd know is to literally just read every post, and mark down how receptive the sharer was to feedback.

Politics is the negotiation of power. Something is "apolitical" to those to have the power when that thing only reinforces and does not threaten that power, because no negotiation is happening. To those who do not have power, most things are political. One resents when the "apolitical" is made "political" because it represents a threat to their power. To learn to see something as political is to learn the ways in which it intertwines with power you probably didn't earn.

I'm not sure I like this review/criticism distinction, mostly because I see something's politics, "what it is, how it functions and what it does, both itself and to us," as intimately connected to its "worthwhileness." Like, no matter how beautifully written and shot a movie is I'm not going to enjoy it nearly as much if it also happens to be nazi propaganda. Inversely, a major reason I like Steven Universe so much is because I approve of its politics. Sure, you can love something and also criticize it, and I'd even go along with the assertion that it's the most worth-while and influential things that are most worthy of criticism. But when when we feel disappointment when the things we love fall short of our expectations, doesn't that detract, at least a little, from its "worthwhileness"?
@AgusSimoncelli
@AgusSimoncelli 7 лет назад
First of all, when the fuck are you going to upload a video again?? (Not trying to be aggressive btw) Second, I think that "worthwhileness" is not necessarily the same as "likeableness(?)", he does characterized something worthwhile as something influential or meaningful later in the video, which would be the most correct definition. I think that he just didn't cover the idea negative criticism in the video. Also, I can only speak for myself of course, but I do tend to (maybe) overthink and be more demanding with things that I love or that I'm hyped about (or either things I totally hate), which leads to a higher scrutiny and criticism of that thing.

I got to the part where Mike said "The people who have high expectations for something are invested in its success, not failure." I paused there, and proceeded to go on a Tweetstorm about how this reminded me of the Rimworld debacle on Rock Paper Shotgun. I was inspired and wanted to get it out before the video went on to derail that train of thought. ... and then I returned to finish watching the video. And naturally, it jumps straight into Rimworld, saying basically the same things. Just, y'know, more articulate and well-researched. Boy do I feel silly! Oh well, credit where it's due. But, you and me, PBS Idea Channel. We get each other.

OK man if you were stuck on an alien planet full of disinterested lesbians you'd be bummed out too. But let's talk about the "intersection" of money and politics since that came up in the video. 7:00 There are a lot of people in the media who have discovered that outrage can get you traffic, and traffic gets you revenue. A lot of the identity politics I see nowadays is just the natural evolution of clickbait journalism. In one year Anita Sarkeesian managed to outrage herself into more money than my parents have in a retirement account saved up over an entire lifetime. You can make a lot of money upsetting the easily offended. So yes, I would call most modern media critics today "enterprising crybabies".
@JohnnyStreets

Great video, and in my opinion, an incredibly important concept to understand. One of the frustrating parts things of attempting to discuss Anita Sarkeesian's videos was the inability of so many people to understand what she was even trying to do. They took her criticism of tropes within gaming as equivalent to tearing down the games themselves, going so far as to disbelieve that she was a gamer herself. When you watch the videos, it's clear that the series is an attempt to improve something she loves, rather than an attempt to tear down something she hates. Too many people do not understand the difference or refuse to.

Holy crap, this whole episode made me want to stand up and applaud non-stop basically from half a minute in up to the end. This is so very important, and something I keep (and _will keep_) saying every year to my musicology students. Criticism _assumes_ a work's worth to talk about it. Politics is _always_ present when you're addressing an audience, and maybe doubly so if you're constructing the very rules of this address as you're doing it. Well done and thanks, Mike. Thike.

I feel like I'm probably getting into muddy territory here, but in the interest of "criticism" and respectful discussion, here I go. "Identity Politics" is already a loaded word, but I'm going to try and maneuver around this. In your video, you (maybe intentionally, maybe not) suggested that identity politics is an inherent feature of different types of people engaging. I actually think your criticism of gender runs counter to that. You laud the Sims in its eschewing of labels to identify different gender expressions, but in my experience, identity politics does exactly the opposite by painstakingly assembling labels to form an "identity". I personally feel that the way you tackle gender is more progressive than identity politics. People aren't a hodge-podge of identity labels, but exist in a space outside labels. If anything, the labels serve to box us in further and in a way play to the strengths of a white supremacist society. So, in the same way that you've "queered" gender, I think the more progressive approach is to queer identity as well. This is not something I typically see in "identity politics" proper. That's not to say that identities can't helpful in analyzing systems of oppression, but I think it's important to keep in mind that for many of these "identities", they can be something we perform, but also something that is applied to us without our consent. Race, for example, is something that is applied to us by society, rather than having any solid biological basis. I think especially when talking about systems of oppression, it's important to see how identity can be used as a tool of oppression. Now, I'm well aware that people can use their identities in an self-affirming way, but I would argue that this is partially a reaction to the oppressive application of identity in our society. So, I guess what I'm saying is that identity politics isn't an inherent feature of people of diverse backgrounds engaging, but a feature of our society, which loves to label people, in particular. Hope I didn't come off too ranty...
@donatodiniccolodibettobardi842
Jon Laing don't you think, that labeling other people is inherent feature of, well, people? Labeling gives us cognitive ease about predicting something/someone and estimating the potential reaction. Things that act too randomly are considered dangerous. Things, that are act predictably and in accord with label are considered to be safe. When labeled things start to deviate from the usual behavior, breaking our predictions apart, our sense of ease diminishes, we might feel threatened or sometimes curious, but the most common reaction is frustration. Labels isn't things they represent, but rather non-scientific theories (and even scientific theories have limited predictive power. It's hard to consider, that label is not what it represents. Labeling may as well be a defensive mechanism developed by apes to feel sense of confidence and power over the outside world, whether it's people we care and beware of or non-living phenomena. What shakes that sense of ease, comfort and power cannot be easily accepted. Society in this are not foreign entity, that imposes it's labels on things and forces us abide - it's labeling power derives from our need to label and categorize things. You can try to change a society, but in doing so you can't ignore the root cause. The problem I see with "thousands of gender" is that people will still find a way to adapt, to create new stereotypes and to force people to abide. And out of this people will rise "a society", that will do it because they parents did it. And so on. Consistent non-authoritarian take on other people identities and behavior requires feat no less, than telepathy. A power to read and feel someone's mind. To actually _know,_ what others are feeling and for them to _know_ what you are feeling. That way most of the labels will become irrelevant.
@HeadlessZombY

this made me realize a bit more of what's happening in this situation. The reason there's so much societal stress over this issue I think goes deeper than traditional values being at ends with them. Our language can't currently support the distinctions between people efficiently enough for us to easily tell one identity from another, because of this, even people who do not care are resistant to explanations of gender identity. Our language can't support the ideas we're trying to express and so the entirety of society grinds against it. This massive creation of words is a symptom just as much as all the rest of it. We can go into explaining each difference in a lengthy process but that doesn't work for the actual amount of information being said, we feel that it should be a single word or phrase and yet our language simply doesn't have one that expresses that idea.

"race" is biological though. Not in the matter of "we are human they are not" but rather that there are very small, subtle differences between different "races". For example, asians are generally shorter than people in the west. This is because of the diet the people in the east have consumed throughout thousands of years and therefore they have developed certain genes that makes them shorter. Same with people with dark skin. They have dark skin because the enviroment they or their ancestors lived in have made them develop a gene that protects from the sun better, etc. But idk, I guess it really depends what you mean when you say "race". Whenever I hear "race" I think of simply ethnicity. If you mean "race" as in the more racist terms, then I think can agree with you better.

The purpose of gender was probably originally to help stratify the workforce into specialties. For example, Women do X kind of work to support the community, Men do Y kind of work to support the community. Given that falling reproductively into one sex or another is the most common mode of biology, at least in humans, the concept of gender is linked to sex; it's not difficult to tell which members of a community are able to carry pregnancies, as a crude diagnostic. Babies, and the production of them, are one of many ways that humans can be divided into categories of roughly equal size. You may find that there are, in fact, many such ways to divide humans. I would categorize gender as we have it today as an evolution of that concept, which has undergone many changes throughout the millennia since its inception-- much as is the case with biological evolution. As a result, many concepts are wrapped up in the concept of gender that might Culture is not a stagnant force, rather it is an ever-changing ecosystem of values and performative behaviors, for good or ill. What value this system has is a judgement that can only be made with any force by each individual human being.

I think there's just certain topics that no media can touch without bringing in some bit of politics. I don't think anyone would argue that the game of tetris itself is political, but when a game starts getting into ideas like gender, sexuality, and roles, it's impossible to do without bringing the baggage that comes with it. Even if the dev is the most tolerant person ever, his views and bias will make their way into the code, and the game's situations.

A review is a subset of critique. A review is meant to describe to other potential users the experience provided by the thing reviewed, while critique is meant to describe to the creators said experience, while also providing personal opinion of the direction of the development process. Reviews describe what is and what you'll get. Critique describes what is, what should be, and what the critic hoped to get. Reviews describe the present. Critiques describe a possible future and how the present might get there. Reviews are resigned with the fact that the product is finished and it represents the final experience. Critique hopes to change what is in favour of what should be.

It's interesting, because I live in Brazil, where one of our biggest debates of this year, is that our congressmen are trying to create a project calleg "school without politics" were any lesson in school that might incline a student to agree with left-wing ideology (and not only, teaching about the importance of Karl Marx or criticizing capitalism in class, or teaching abour the Russian Revolution without painting Lenin as the Devil, but of course that includes debates of a liberal agenda such as abortion, drugs, gay rights, race equality, gender, and all other themes that a teacher could potentially bring it up in class), will be banned from schools and the teacher potentially fired. This project is under the impression that our youth are being manipulated in school to elect left-wing partys for the last elections, and that school is no place for politics, only for education, as if those subjects were separated. What most of the critics of this project claim is that in facts wanting to create an environment without politics, is politics, is a political act to ban politics were it is inconvenient for groups of power.

Hey Mike -- have you ever thought about doing a video on The Beginner's Guide? Are you even aware of its existence? It sort of purposefully didn't get a lot of media coverage when it first came out. I bring it up because I think it's very related to this discussion here; this idea of review vs. critique. Beginner's Guide asserts a lot of very intense ideas about how an audience "should" respond to or treat a piece of media, and why. It brings the fundamentals of audience/author communication into serious question, so much so that I actually hesitate to confidently submit any of the sentences in this paragraph. I really think you should make a video on it, though, because it's exploring a lot more than just that and it really deserves to be analyzed. (And it has been analyzed, mind you, but a lot of this analysis has been focused on that "core" discussion about the audience/author relationship and I wouldn't mind seeing the discussion expanded a bit further.) At any rate, I think you'd get a lot out of it even without making a video. So here it is if you aren't already familiar. Cheers. store.steampowered.com/app/303210/

I'd like to see an Idea Channel about identity politics and media portrayal. I'd like to see this because I'm autistic. There are many characters in the media of past decades who are identifiably autistic to one degree or another, not labeled as such, who are treated as neurologically typical within the context of the story. The primary example I can give is Allison from "The Breakfast Club." At the end of the story, she puts on makeup, changes her hair, changes clothing, and is paired with the jock, and lives happily ever after as a neurotypical girl.

I remember playing when I was 7 back when it was only the old one that didn't really let you do all these things. It would of been fun to play Sims and have all these choices. Make a female that can impregnate or the opposite, a male who gets pregnant. Its just a fun idea of roleplaying with life. Thats the purpose of the game. But I get what you mean! We shouldnt make everything like this as some sort of anti gender biasing. But imagine if they took it further. A review is made in order to inform consumers of the quality of the product based on the reviewer's bias. If your personal bias, likes and tastes match that of the reviewer the "score" will carry a meaning to you of whether to engage with said product, at the same time if your tastes don't match it will also inform you if the product is for you but on an inverse level. Criticism is the personal bias of a person often but not always against a product, it holds no weight on whether enjoyment can be gain from, but instead attempts to conform the product to the users own bias. a reviewer informs but a critic's attempt, is to change the readers views to match, and affirm those of the writer. A critic cares not for the purpose, audience, culture or artistic principle of the item being criticized but instead judges said item on their personal, political, social and cultural views with out consideration toward the creator and their views.

I can sympathize with this view. Being a straight male, I'm at a disadvantage of understanding this though. It seems (like all psychological issues) if we create a classification, someone will identify with it (even if the were previously unaware that that was who they were). It seems a logical conclusion (again coming from a point of second hand experience at best) that most (not all) people buy into these classifications because they want to be special and different. It seems more simple to just rate the following statements: "I am attracted to those that I assume I can procreate with unaided by scientific intervention." and "my mental self image matches my physical self."

I had this same argument about politics-free media with my theater teacher last week, and it was really interesting. It was incurred by an in-class discussion of a post-colonial reading of The Tempest. The debate basically devolved to one about the merits of historical criticism and new criticism (in which I was firmly on the side of the latter). Just thought it was a funny coincidence. It's kind of amazing, I had to deal with something like this today. I watch a D&D campaign on Twitch and someone criticized the show, arguing about a lack of diversity and that the channel should have put that in to consideration. I get that. I'm all for diversity, but also I know the circumstances of why the show is a mostly white cast. It's because the game was a private run campaign for a year before they were asked to put it on the air. They weren't going to change up the people they had been playing with in a story that had been running for over a year at that point. That's not fair to the players. I explained this as calmly as I possibly could. Apparently they didn't want to hear it and I had to block someone I had once respected. It happens. I'll get over it. But it really drives home the problem with outrage culture and criticism in today's culture and that people easily mistake the two. Sometimes you end up being critical of something you haven't put as much research in to as you thought you did. Sometimes you see people who just want to be angry and see anyone trying to rebut against that argument or defend themselves as a personal attack. They WON'T give it a chance. They want to be mad at it and hate it for being wrong. This kind of mindset in turn makes people automatically defensive of criticisms and assume the worst about anyone being passionately critical about anything, which just becomes this infuriating spiral in to the shitshow that is internet fights. It's why I'll still get my head bitten off for vocalizing certain tropes in film or games. "OH MY GOD IT'S JUST A MOVIE GET OVER IT." I'm hoping that we can get out of this mindset in the near future. I think criticism is healthy. I think it's also healthy to disagree with some criticism and actually discuss it like civilized human beings. I think you can learn a lot about yourself and the people around you.
