Singular they dates back to the 14th century.. Why are you people crying about this now?? I can only find one connection between the recent outcry over the singular 'they' and that is homophobia.. Can you give another reason?
@@Sandmann629 in my language, the neutral gender "he". they don't teach you about they as the neutral pronoun, only that it is used for multiple people. you have to learn yourself
Take my word for it, as a brazilian I'll tell you that this dude favored passing of laws in Brazil that made it into literal CRIMES exactly the kind of joke he did in this clip, so now he ran to the US to tell this jokes, and EVEN THERE he's against freedom of speech. Dude's a real piece of work.
Its called acting for comedic effect, this is 100% just a made up joke.. Stop believing in everything you hear.. Reading something this stupid was quite traumatic, he's litterally a professional comedian. Do you also believe actors are real? You know Armageddon was just a fiction right? Godzilla... never actually happened.. I do have a bridge to sell you, its super cheap and can be yours at a speeecial prize just for you..
@@goatreaper4363 Great comment, nothing to say only assuming that you somehow know my state of mind. Why would I be mad? Because I said "stupid"? Half of that comment was jokes on Moody. What a worthless comment, but fine, you're entitled to your opinion. I'll leave you with a Jimmy Carr favorite so its not a complete waste of time: If you want my comeback, you gotta scrape it off your moms teeth..
Sadly, 200% of 0 is still 0. The singular third-person pronoun "they" has existed since the 14th century and is literally older than the singular "you" (because like it, "you" also started off as being purely plural of which the antiquated singular form of was instead "thou") By his own words, that he said that his friend was bringing along "a friend". Singular antecedent was literally right there, apparently context and phrasing just doesn't exist in his world, apparently.
@@lilblock3564 Are they really delusional, or are you just hateful of an entire demographic of people? Geez, it's like we literally didn't have two entire major lessons in history to not be hateful of an entire group of people just for them being how they are when they're not harming anyone. You made a claim of them being delusional, go on then, prove it. Read through what I've sent and present your case, lest your position gets cleaved apart by Hitchen's Razor.
@@pedroHernandez-np9rq It's still used for both singular and plural, no matter how much you refuse to accept the fact. Do tell, if someone were to forget an item, would you say "who forgot his-or-her umbrella here" or "who forgot *_their_* umbrella here"? Also, do you have this same stick up your a*s about the pronoun "you" too? Another pronoun that was also initially purely plural, was then used for both singular and plural, of which it has been used for literal CENTURIES before now.
This is a really good example of a joke about a certain group of people that isnt offensive or driven by hate, keep up the good work this was hilarious
@@mandyoliverio76 that isn't what offense means, you can mention demographic groups, even make fun of them, it's only a problem when it perpetuates cruelty.
@@golfer435 what nuanced meanings? everything he said is basic and literal the only "nuance" is the neutral bs part that he is explaining with a joke why exactly it is bs
Yeah. We learn English, French, Spanish of whatever European languages as foreign languages. Third person singular conjugates in the different way from plural. This is grammar, not personal preference.
@@mjstc7893I think what they meant is the culture of preparing a lot of food for possible guest. They aren't sure all non-American has this habit of preparing food (not just little snack but a whole heavy meal) for guests. And I'm pretty sure mentioning SEA is enough for ppl with brain to understand that they're non-American 🙄
@@mjstc7893As a European it does also happen in Europe but like they don't get mad about it if someone calls them the wrong pronoun like they do in America. People are just chiller over here, if they wanna be called an it thats fine no body gives a sht
Eh, the delivery is pretty much just copped from somewhere else, and the entire point is stupid anyways. The concept of singular "they" is older than singular "you" and has been in use for over 500 years now.
@@RebelTheArtGal People would call a singular person “they” when they don’t know the person’s gender. Like: “Mommy I made a new friend!” “That’s great! What’s their name?” That’s different from, “Call me they. It’s my gender.”
It was perfectly smooth and he left just the right amount of room for the audience to laugh at the perfect intervals in nice even bursts... Or.... Laugh track. It's a laugh track, that's why his delivery seems smooth.
It's not confusing at all it's actually a standard part of human English which a person like this would actually have been taught whose school bag is this that was left behind Some kid runs out of the door grabs the bag and says they forgot it I'll take it to them thank you. And that's without this transgender stuff that's just normal English :-) but hey go ahead and pretend it's confusing
Did he learn english with the hamburguer people? Because where I learned it, they was always for both plural and singular. And my native tongue is gendered, still it is simple to understand
Yeah, except the delivery only "works" by disregarding concepts such as "context" and "phrasing". Even as another non-native speaker, I could spot that.
@@RebelTheArtGal not every non-native speaker understands "they" being a singular pronoun, or as intelligent as you seem to be .^. the concept of non-native speakers not understanding stuff that should be common sense is a kind of trope in comedy even some native speakers get confused, so it's more like a "boomer and technology" thing than a "person doesn't respect identity" thing
@@CrowCereal Aye, but I still can't shake off how it pretty much is just like a dog-whistle. The replies I've received on this comment section really just steer my point that way too.
For some reason, the way he said, "they are here" made me think of Mark 5:9 "And He was asking him, "What is your name?" And he said to Him, "My Name is Legion, for we are many."
Just look at his face when he says "So I bought A LOT OF FOOD!" 😂😂 I love Rafinha so much, he did not deserved to get canceled here in Brazil... He is one of a kind
No wonder he got cancelled there, this is a cancel-worthy English "joke" too, since we all know why the 700-year old concept of singular they is mocked like so and it's because it's to inderectly mock the non-binary people who have taken to using such language. If not, then the-also both-singular-and-plural "you" would be complained about like so too, yet it's not. Btw, singular they is also just part of proper English grammar. It can be used both plural _and_ singular and in this joke, in Rafi's on words, the antecedent for they is "a friend", that's a singular antecedent btw.
@@RebelTheArtGal lol then go back in time to use those words. You know what NORMS is? Well I don't expect anything from someone who demands other people to call themselves in their pronouns they/them even if those persons are not around.
@@Nopejuststop It's... literally still normal today to use singular they, stupid. _"The patient_ has to be told on the outset how much *_they_* will have to pay" _"A journalist_ should not be forced to reveal *_their_* sources." Imagine calling it a "demand" when you're just told to refer to someone as they/them. Is that how you act like when you get told someone else's name too? I mean... sure, as long as you're also fine with getting disrespected like so, because "how dare you DEMAND me use your name", amirite?
@@RebelTheArtGal wow, you really tried to reply to everyone here, aye? i must say i applaud your dedication to try fit yourself and your little community in.
Bible grammar is the original grammar look what it says using word HIM to adress the person which subjected by legion of demons, these gender abnormal are destroying the grammar 😂
@@snakm You should learn from Sigmund Freud about Certain Neurotic Mechanisms in Homosexuality. FUTURE A third of mankind was killed by the three plagues of fire, smoke and sulfur
People don't realise that they/them is constantly used in a gender-neutral way and has been since even the 14th century. ex: I talked to my friend the other day and you wouldn't believe what they told me! No drama, no sensitivity, just basic grammar. edit: Not talking abt the comedian guy, just reffering to some confused ppl in the comments.
