In 1973 - 1975 on the East Bay radio station KDIA a legendary DJ by the name of Bob Jones used to play this at the start of his show while he described being on his Soul Skateboard going through all the areas of Oakland , it was absolutely Classic !!!!
LOVE IT! BEAUTIFUL HORN. THANKS GENE. REST IN PEACE MY FRIEND. AND I EMPHASIZE THE WORD REST, BECAUSE TO ALL OF US WHO DIG YOUR MUSIC, YOU ARE NOT DEAD. YOUR MUSIC WILL ALWAYS LIVE IN OUR HEARTS.
My mother (RIP) had this in her collection and I LOVED IT, and played it till I wore it out. "Guru" and "Blue Velvet" just sends me!!! The whole album is GREAT! I Love you Gene Ammons! (RIP)
My aunt, who was a big jazz fan, had this album---which is probably where I heard this song from---always liked it---classic '70's jazz-funk jam. Don't know why I never heard it in a film---this would have been perfect opening background music for any one of those hardcore '70's action thrillers!
How can you NOT love this? This is....I can't put it into words. We had this album in Chicago and it was the ultimate piece of our gatherings. Can you hear "Jug"? Get em'...
Brother JUGS---one of better tenor men around, who played with a BOLD and GUTZY jazz sound, full of funk and soul. If some could UPLOAD --- "SACK FULL OF DREAMS"--- I'm sure it would be greatly appreciated for all who love the JUG. Keep on VAMPIN' my BROTHER!!!!!
Totally... I thought for a minute it was Cedric's version of Spinal Tap. Great jam, glad I clicked in. Also like the Santana version, but that one is for the summer and this is for the fall.
I am a saxophone player who played in the Sun Ra Arkestra and many other groups and all i can say is that Gene or Jug is my favorite sax player and I remember piano great Harold Mabern saying that he was everyones favorite. Sonny Rollins said guys like Gene Ammons and Ben Webste are in a class by themselves. Who can disagree with him
I could listen to Gene Ammons all day long...and into the next day. Love it. His ballads are incredible also. Just absolutely beautiful and always so soulful. A crime against humanity that this guy was incarcerated for 9 years. For getting high. I mean come on.
I always reflect on the state of Illinois locking him down for something he needed treatment for. A crime against humanity is exactly what they committed...
This was my intro to Jazz - 1970. Still love it. I saw Gene Ammons at the Both/And, but he played more straight-ahead, Came to realize what I loved about this tune was Charles Earland 'burnin' (and Bernard Purdie). Love the comments on this thread! Bob Jones, KRE - best radio station ever! Where would we be without Jazz?
What a cool, hip, and funky sound!! It is really great to see all of the enthusiastic comments from everyone regarding the late, great Gene Ammons. I would like to thank you very much for sharing this amazing track!!!! :-)
In the 1970's Jungle Strut was used as a soundtrack by a DJ on KDIA 1310 AM. The DJ took his audience on a skateboard ride throughout San Francisco, Monday through Friday around 5:00 pm. If you knew the territory in San Francisco you could imagine in your mind the DJ's exact location because he provided the street, the block and landmarks in the area. What a time to listen to radio.
Not to mention, KJAZ, Alameda. And Bobby Hutcherson's club only three block from my house. And, of course, Keystone Korner at 750 Vallejo. The 70's were a GREAT time to be in SF.
+B. Gainer Yeah! The DJ was Bob (Skin & Bones) Jones; road that imaginary skateboard all over San Francisco -- Golden Gate Park, Haight Ashbury, The Richmond, The Mission District, South of Market (I guess that's SOMA now), Western Addition, Hunters Point (HP!), Pacific Heights -- all over! Got me thru my commute everyday!
+Eddy Haskel Keystone Korner was the spot! How about The Great American Music Hall --- I think it was like 859 O'Farrell; The Old Waldorf was at 444 Battery. I've always thought San Francisco's jazz scene has been notoriously underrated due to the popularity of the scene in New York (Village Vangard, Blue Note, Minton's, et al). What was the name of Bobby Hutcherson's club, and where was it?. I'm in Atlanta now --- miss those days back in the Bay Area ....
+K Jones Yes the jazz scene in the 70's in SF, while in a little decline compared to the 50's and 60s, was still top notch. I moved to SF just about the time Keystone was transitioning from a rock to a jazz venue. I saw so many great players there: Miles Davis, Chet Baker, Stan Getz, Dexter Gordon, Art Blakey, Bill Evans, Cal Tjader, Gene Ammons, Shirley Scott, Barney Kessel, Joe Pass, Herb Ellis, Freddie Hubbard, and maybe the most memorable of all (for me), Rahsaan Roland Kirk both before and after his stroke. Hutcherson played at the Both/And club on Divisadero at Oak almost every week. We used to call the place "Bobby Hutcherson's," and I know it was opened by one of his best friends... but I don't know if Bobby ever had an ownership stake in the club. He's still around, btw, and living down in Montara.
I caught Miles, Freddie, Art, and Rahsaan Roland Kirk -- but all at large venues (UC Berkeley Jazz Festival); would've loved to have seen these guys in an intimate venue like Keystone Korner. I did see Cal Tjader there though. Great times ... Peace
Gene Ammons. 'Nuff said....just finished listening to a few cuts by Gene's Dad, legendary Boogie woogie pianist, Albert Ammons. Beautiful. RIP, Musicians. Thanks for the upload, veewee. Blessings
+Gary L Jamerson Are you kidding me?? What you know about Bob Jones and his skateboard? Dude, Bob Jones (Skin & Bones) got a brother thru commute time playin Gene Ammons! KDIA Lucky 13 -- yessir!
In my teens and very early 20’s I did the acid/rave scene in England. 87-92. There were the chill out lounges away from the acid then hardcore rave music. DJ sets ambient and funky jazz and smooth sounds. Gene, Miles Davis, Lonnie Liston Smith. I’m 54 now and still love this like it was the 1st time I heard all those years ago. It’s incredible
I listened to Gene when I was a teenager growing up I Dallas his sax just taken me away on colonial ave.The man was one of the greatest of all times! dan
That DJ was "Skin & Bones" Bob Jones! KDIA's finest in 70's and until the station was sold to the Disney Corp. I had the pleasure of taking him out on my boat crabbing.
+Sammy Davis I'm in Atlanta now; still remember Bob Jones maneuvering the skateboard all over the bay area; got me thru that Bay Area commute! Miss those days ....
@postatility This is the first song I learn to play the Saxophone..I I am glad to see the comments, I still sound like him today..45 years later...(smile)
My dad loved Jug's soloing on this piece, but he felt like the electric keyboard compromised the essence of modern jazz music. He and I would go at about his opinion. I took it like he was trying to imply that Gene Ammons was on the verge of selling out. I miss dad...
I found Boogaloo Joe Jones, which led me to funky trombone player Fred Wesley, which has connected me here!!! You Tube can be some superb technology at times! GOOD MUSIC!
