Gene has never gotten the acclaim that he deserves, he was such a great singer and songwriter, he should have had the popularity that he created for Anne Murray...He is a Canadian Icon.
Agreed ....The recognition he never truly got is what drove him to take his own life .... I know this from personal interaction with him in the fall of 94 just before his tragic death in January of the following year .... He is definitely up there with Lightfoot for sure ... Just never got the acclaim

So great to hear Gene sing this. I listened to Anne's album many times and loved it, but these videos are very special. I'd forgotten how sweet his voice is. A dear man...
If Gene MacLellan had never written a song, I think he was a unique talent with his singing alone. I have always loved the sound of his voice, his phasing and articulation. Great singer.
One of my favourite childhood memories from when I was 2 or 3 years old was listening to my uncle Todd play "Born with a thorn in my shoe" and staring at the album cover of Gene with an eye patch. I didn't really get it until I was older, but in many ways I feel I too was born with a thorn in my shoe...
He had a great voice on his own...maybe was a little shy from the lime light. Mom worked with him at the hospital, and he came to a new years party one time singing a lot about birds :)
Thanks a ton for sharing these songs. I bought his early album (this one, probably) a million years ago, but it was defective, so I've never been able to play him whenever I want. Until now.
beautiful beautiful, had heard Anne's version and so that was beautiful...... and what a joy to hear this from Gene.. the creator....... beautiful x 100....
Grew up on Gene's music. So glad to be able to find it on here finally. Thanks for the uploads. My two favourite Gene songs....."The Call" and "Thorn in my Shoe". :)
I first heard Gene MacLellan in the early 70's with his first lp and was immediately touched by his wonderful lyrics and the beautiful voice of honesty. Thank you so much for posting these songs. I'm going to look for the op lps i don't have and hope others will find Gene MacLellan too.
Amazing song writer/poet really. Think of the line "ill just be bidding my time as the glow from the wine makes a fool of me" or "I think the good lord knew, that I was born with a thorn in my shoe". If those lyrics just popped into his head, he was blessed with a gift 90 % of the song writers in the world do not have.
Well this gentleman influenced me at an early age back in 1968 and followed him right up to the end and attended his funeral in Chtn a long time ago.....so much as been said of Gene and he was a genius in his own setting with voice, tone, delivery and song writing many of the greats to come along sang his music.....If one thing annoyed me in all of this he did not on my get the top recognition nor fame that he truly deserved and the money for his work....my opinion only but Gene was of only a few of greats in Canada...still miss him today.........
He did get a Juno for song writer...very well deserved. Not sure about $, though some royalties would flow. Anne never forgot what he did for her. Great singer but needed him and Kenny Loggins to write her hits.
SO SAD.. R.I.P. Gene.. We played Johnnie's Bar (the Prince Edward Room) in Charlottetown.. Gene would be at the Bar BUT he would hide when would take a break.. I never did meet Gene.. sigh.. I saw him on TV.. I heard him on the Radio..
haha....Old PE room days, you probably knew my dad. He knew so many people who started there and becames big names it was not funny. But yeah, I heard Gene was a quiet introspective person.
If you were a Budding Musician, back in the Day you had to PAY YOUR DUES.. lol.. SO-to-SPEAK.. It was one of the better Rooms to play in, in the Maritimes.. I spent some 53 years at it.. I was just a stupid Bass Player.. I loved what I did, though.. I played with some pretty big names.. On the many stages I played on, I was generally the Lighting Guy.. SO.. I knew where I was gonna stand,on the Stage.. I would LIGHT the spots on the Stage for the Guys.. and ME.. However, I was always ONE Step OFF.. No One quite knew who the Bass Player was.. He was always IN THE DARK, when the BAND Played.. NOW.. you have me asking.. Who was your Dad??

At the time, Anne was in love with a married man who she eventually married but there on the sidelines was Gene, silently in love with her, knowing he could never have her, he gave her the greatest gift he could, his songs. As a result a star was born and we as Canadains, have never been the same.
Well said. You can hear the love for Anne in his voice when he calls her name. I think a piece of her heart went with him when he died. I understand the guy, I have been in love with Anne forever without ever meeting her. The Queen of Canada.
