@@BassGuitar4lifethat's true ! I've always liked the bass in "Ladies room"...and at the end part of the live version of "Cold gin" ! 👍🏻...a lot of these pinheads think it's a better song if it's complicated...😂
i mean . the bassline on running with the devil is nothing special but its iconic. meanwhile the bassplaying on any given cannibal corpse album is so demanding fast and impressive but no one but bass players care.
I can't stand Jazz music & couldn't name a single Jazz player on any instrument. My older Cousins took me to a Jazz club in Kansas City once. The band was literally a piano, a Saxaphone, a drummer & the singer was literally going "Shoobie doobie, shoobie doobie" & the whole place was rocking out on it. There were like five or six couples dancing to it. I wanted to bust out laughing at how silly it was but, I didn't want to hurt my cousins' feelings. I wish I could take my cousins to a GWAR concert but, I think it would kill them.
As a guitarist the only thing I can think of that would be appropriate for this would be I would rather hear David gilmour any day over yngwie malmsteen 🤘🤘🤘
Gene criticizing flea of all people for his bass playing is just further proof how out of touch these guys have gotten. I’m saying this and I don’t even like flea or RHCP. Doesn’t mean flea isn’t one of the best bassists that has ever been in mainstream rock. (Honestly, does anybody even really think about RHCP anymore?)
Gene insulted jazz and the entire world of jazz? Gene, listen to a jazz bassist like the late Jacco Pastorius, or Ron Carter. You couldn't even shine their shoes.
Hi Dr F. I suppose it all depends on what you're a fan of. For some, it has to be current or it's too old, others like timeless classics. I feel that those who can recognize something good, whether it's simple or technical, current or from the past, have the right idea. It's like being able to appreciate painting masterpieces, cartoons, illustrations, and totally unskilled drawings equally.
Gene also said in another interview he couldn’t remember any bass lines from JPJ of Led Zeppelin. While I agree with his point, he lays the bs on too thick to try to validate his argument
It's impossible to remember any JPJ's lines. He doesn't remember them himself and played them differently every time. Same about John Deacon in his early days - impro, impro, impro...
I Think You said it best earlier in the video when you indicated the type of music you enjoy is gong to vary according to your mood, which is so simple but profound. As far as Gene goes, we're all used to his simplistic, arrogant ramblings and recognize he's driven by money and not much else.
Ya know, honestly, the KISS situation still has potential. I always wanted to see a makeup KISS that only used their heavier music. Like COS , Lick It Up, and Creatures. Imagine seeing the Demon singing Hate live. What if after the avatars, they do a reality show with all past members (V.V. never signed on as a member lol) that search for the next KISS. Find a new band and thematically reflect the 4 personas Apocalypta for Gene. Space for Ace , etc. But do the music as ass kicking....maybe incorporate a bit of thrash. Sounds too far fetched eh? Lol
Commercially successful music and good music are definitely 2 different things. If you love money above all (like Gene), then commercially successful music is the good music. Commercial and good aren't mutually exclusive, but it seems rarer and rarer since the 70's. Good music is in the ear of the listener, not how many dollars some fat cat record company made off some artist's work. But that's my opinion and I'm not saying it should be anyone else's.
Well, he's not wrong. I'll take Gene over Flea or some freaking Billy Sheehan any day because Gene plays music and all those people are merely just sportsmen.
Gene doesn’t like jazz, yet comes up with something like the line in 100,000 Years. Jazz is crazy because when someone picks up on it, it doesn’t go away. I like Gene, but on this, he’s wrong.
GS is a really crappy bass player for somebody who has been playing so long. Just watch the video of Carol Kaye trying to teach him a very simple bass line and he just can't grasp it! Hilarious!
I agree with Gene...that guy Flea...? The guy who looks like he's been 60 years old for the last 30 years ? He plays so many notes he might as well be the lead guitarist...not a fan of him or that band...I'm sure he's a great musician...but I'm sure ballet dancers are good dancers too...
I agree with your masses argument. My example is,Hall and Oates, they’re good ,but they are No Everly Brothers.Hall and Oates are only the biggest duo because the masses were bigger than in the 50’s and 60’s.
Red Hot Chili Peppers Blood Sugar S£x Magic classic album was funk+punk rock, hard rocking fusion, from a serious band, that’s a solid listen all the way through from start to finish. Along with a couple other later funky Chili Peppers songs with funky bass lines on songs like Snow & Scar Tissue, Turn it Again, Hey, & Readymade that all Gene’s groupies could line up & hum to. The Chili Peppers had probably 10 massive hits songs, that can be considered iconic in American pop culture with lasting cultural impact, that remain in regular radio rotation to this day, as touchstones of a bygone era, that most bands would kill to have just one of? & then there were a few especially memorable Chili Peppers magical turn arounds, like on the song Breaking The Girl, similar to the stunning floaty turn around grooves Soundgarden used to occasionally get to, like at the end of the song Superunkown, which are all reminiscent of Black Sabbath’s magical turn around cut time breaks, like on Symptom of the Universe, which very few radio bands would even attempt, much less execute so flawlessly. Unfortunately the new sub par music that the Chili Peppers make today is so embarrassingly lackluster, that I’ve called out people in public that wear their shirts, & about a year ago while waiting in line at the grocery store I offended some hipsters by telling one that he should retire his Chili Peppers T shirts, after talking to them they said they weren’t even familiar with Blood Sugar S£x Magic, but said they were big fans & awkwardly attempted to defend the Chili Peppers new material!…😖 Les Claypool, Billy Cox, Bob Daisley, Geezer Butler, Paul McCartney, Jack Bruce, Victor Conte, John Paul Jones, Geddy Lee, Stu Cook, Cliff Burton, Robert Trujillo, Jaco Pastorius, Tommy Shannon, Dave Holland…I could list 100 bass players without ever mentioning Gene, wasn’t Kiss’s biggest hit, a song that their original drummer wrote, before he even joined Kiss?…💋
Gene’s inability to remember Flea’s and John Paul Jones’ bass lines is more about his dementia and narrow mind than anything. He sucks at bass. Good songwriter.
