When I first started out in genealogy, I wanted a genealogy records checklist. I guess I’m a checklist kind of person. So here I’ve created a list of types of records to look for when researching each ancestor. This is a “suggested” list of what to look for, not necessarily where to find them.
There is no list in the world that could possibly list everything, but these are just some of the common family history records we would seek when researching our family history.

I live in Australia and how I wish that we had census records available like UK and US. It would make things soooo much easier for family historians here. I like your check lists and your videos are very helpful. TFS.

18:16 On a related note it would be so great if there was a way to look up addresses changes. Not movement of families, but if a residential address changed due to road construction.

Thanks for the checklist. Researching in New Jersey I found Tax Lists to be very useful since the census records for the early 1800s were destroyed.

I totally agree with your comments on the importance of newspapers. I found a good bit of information on my great grandparents because they were active in the community and were written about in the local newspaper. I also was able to find information on what really happened to my aunt who died at the age of 2 on my dad's side. for years the family story was that she died of malnourishment in 1932 but the newspapers and as it just so happened, a hand written document found in my grandfather's wallet my dad had, destroyed that story. She was sick with a disease and was never able to overcome it after a lengthy fight.

I wish Ancestry would have this embedded. It does for some extent with vital statistics and what comes up in hints, but if it's not a vital records or something that comes up in a hint, it's not being suggested to look for it. And the checklist will change based on time period and location your ancestors lived.

In Madeira Portugal the parish baptism, marriage and death records go back to the 1500's.
@vccgenealogysig

In Europe, Vital Records go back a very long way. They may be called something different (e.g. often the information was in Church Records). Since none of my ancestors lived in the U.S., all were from Sweden, England or Scotland where the information about birth, christening, marriage and death goes back hundreds of years. That is why they would be most important to me.

TY Connie. I have been using a checklist from online that I got years ago, but it's not perfect. Using some of your categories to update my checklist. TY again, keep the tips coming ☺️ Short Q, off topic. Do you have an Ella Madsen among the names of your peeps? This Ella died on January 31, 1977 in Alliance Ohio. There is a coroner's report for her on Family Search.

Awesome video Connie, I do have a question on Church records. If a church no longer exists (church building has been torn down) what happens to its records and how can you find them?
@GenealogyTV
@GenealogyTV Год назад
That depends on the denomination. Sometimes the records go up to a hierarchy within that sector/denomination and sometimes they end up at the local library or State Archives. You need to research the church and denomination. You might ask the county librarian or local historian too.
@cindycarrasco2383

@@GenealogyTV I found the cemetery records for my Mom's gramdfather & a cousin whho died at 5 yr in the local Historical Society storage room. It was a small church that's now an apartment building. The cemetery is fenced in but a lot of the tombstones are missing including my ggm's. It is still being mowed so someone is taking care of it.

I would say Wills/Probate are the most important. Without them you can't go further and further back if your ancestor made a Will. In a sense, a Will is a death certificate just without the mentioning of the parents.
@GenealogyTV
@GenealogyTV Год назад
Wills are great. Sadly only about 10% of the population had them.
@DescendantsofPocahontas
@DescendantsofPocahontas Год назад
@@GenealogyTV that is sad. I descend from very prominent Virginian and Maryland individuals who all wrote Wills, so it is quite easy for me to track my lineage.

How do you use the family group sheet the lines are so small and for me hard to print that small? What do you suggest
@GenealogyTV
@GenealogyTV Год назад
Well... Personally I don't use paper versions anymore. I use Ancestry to type everything in. This way you're not writing the same information over and over again on different sheets.

The checklists have suggested a couple of things I haven't looked at, like church records. I'm at a brickwall on my paternal line, Bryant, at my great grandfather. Autosomal DNA has revealed many cousins, but none on the paternal line. yDNA has confused things even more by saying that the best fit is Smoot. Bryant is not mentioned. I'm thinking that my great grandfather and his brothers (no sisters are evident) may have been adopted after some catastrophic event. I'm not sure if adoption records were public in the early 1800s. I haven't seen anything specifically dealing with adoption. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.
@GenealogyTV
@GenealogyTV Год назад
I would chase the cousin matches that are in the branch on AncestryDNA. Just because you don't have any good matches in the YDNA, doesn't worry me. There are WAY more test kits out there for Ancestry than the YDNA. You might try identifying a direct line male descendant and offer to pay for a YDNA test to see if there is a match. If not a match, you're on to something.
