Loved your review. Now I am listening to Kesha's song on my speakers to experience what you talked about. Thank you.

My first pair of genny's was the 1998 1029a's along with a genny sub. I paid like $800 for the whole set used for home studio and luv'ed them to death. Used them for years and never broke. The other students around me bought like m-audio and KRK cheap speakers sounded horrible and they end up selling them in the first year. The commercial studio near me that I do event production work with has the 8040 in a 5.1 surround set along with the big in-wall installed genny's on a NEVE console and pro tools HDX network. Genelec is un-rivaled when it comes to stereo imagining and I luv that it has a very class-A analog sound to it. Just relaxing and listening music too and watching movies with my sister made the films so much more exciting. I remember my sister telling OMG I can hear every little detail in the air. You gotta try it in a home studio setup with a the genny sub so u get the low end rumble. Watch "The NUN" on a decent sized screen, it's quite a experience.

Last year I was looking for a pair of monitors to fit on a small desk in a small room so after some research I purchased a pair of IK Multimedia iLoud MTMs and haven't wanted for a new pair since. I come from the music recording world and have listened on speakers that cost like a house and sound sublime. These are not them, but for their size and price they are excellent. Great imaging and they go low enough to hear what I need to hear, but don't expect a miracle. The onboard room-correction DSP is nice, too. I love looking at them and listening to them. One day I'll buy some 8300-series, but until then these will do just fine.

Thank you for saying what I have always said, good audio is WAY more important then things like 4k, 3D, or HDR. I see way to many people trying to shoot 4k or HDR instead of getting good audio.
@djp_video

I've always felt that way, and mentioned it a few times on the channel. But I probably don't say it enough. It seems to be a rare attitude in video production. Audio always takes a front seat in my own productions, but when I'm working with other companies it very often feels like an afterthought... lower quality gear, not having someone on staff specifically in charge of audio, or budgeting far less for an audio engineer than the camera operators seems more the norm than the exception.

@@djp_video I have done several small productions that don't even have an audio op. In the ones I have done that don't have a dedicated operator, the graphics or replay operator will run audio.

I've been using the 8040´s as my primary production monitors in a 2.0 setup for 5 years now in a smaller room (about 4x4 meters) and they deliver exceptional quality in detail, resolution and panorama. I am using them for post production in music and some video as well. In the beginning I considered them a bit too dry but after some months burning them in and as adapting my ears they are excellent. The production room next to mine is about 9x5 meters and has been equipped 1 year ago with a 2.1 setup with a second hand 8050´s and the large 7070 Subwoofer. That setup really delivers in audio level but still keeps up in any situation. As 2nd monitors we are using M030´s. When A/B comparing the 8050/8040 in the same room the 8050 is wrapping up the stereo image even more and deliver better range as well as clarity. For a 5.1 or 7.1 setup or ATMOS I think the 8040´s and less would be fine in combination with 8030/8020´s. In this larger room Yam HS10´s was used in 2.1 setup before and the Genelecs are a true step up and in particular for surround setups with the linear characteristics in the different models. Still the Yamahas are decent too.
@djp_video
@djp_video 2 года назад
I've never cared for the HS10s or their replacements personally. I put my 8030s in my office about a week ago so I can break them in and really get used to them. They're definitely a step up from my Mackie HR624s I have been using. They are mellowing out a little bit as I use them too.

Hi Doug, Could there be any chance about a video talking about how to approach marketing or how you get most of your clients? I'm having a hard time finding anyone wanting to invest any money at all in live video. And not even because they do it in house, they either don't want to spend money or feel like their events should be in-person only.
@djp_video
@djp_video 2 года назад
If I felt like I was qualified to talk about that I would. But I'm really not. I've gotten all of my work by word-of-mouth and none of the marketing efforts I've made have had any kind of measurable result. I'm really not a salesman and don't particularly care to be.

As for your use case, you talk specifically about these pair of speakers for production value, what would you say about just enjoyment? Would you descibe them as a "fun" speaker if you value, the sound of music rather than just production work. I've got a pair of JBL 305's and a SVS SB1000 and I love them, hard to think music or sound can get "a lot" better than those. I'm debating a pair of G Three's or Four's for myself but not sure how they may compare. My listening space is a small bedroom, but wanted a future proofing of sort for when I move out. Do you think I'll hear a night and day difference, and would you recommend the four's over the three's? i'm looking for a speaker pair i'll never need to upgrade again lol
@djp_video
@djp_video 2 года назад
Personally I've moved toward wanting to hear things exactly as intended by the engineers, so I actually have studio monitors everywhere -- my office, home theater, trailer, etc. I've gotten spoiled by the great sound of monitors so I don't have a very high tolerance for consumer speakers or headphones that overemphasize portions of the audio spectrum, like the way overly boomy trend in consumer audio, especially headphones, that have dominated for the last decade or so. I can't stand them. They tend to mask a lot of what is going on. There will be quite a noticeable difference between your JBL 305s and anything from Genelec. The JBLs might have a relatively flat response, but that is only part of the equation. One of the big reasons that Genelecs (and similar quality monitors) sound better than less expensive monitors is that they pay so much attention to timing, transient response, and phase (among other things) in addition to the response curve. If you were to look at a waterfall plot for these speakers you'd see that the output signal is more accurate in every way, not just in overall frequency response. Higher quality monitors do a better job of (1) maintaining the phase relationship between frequencies, (2) handle not just the beginning but end of transients better (they start and stop reproducing signals more quickly, reducing resonances and distortions), (3) make sure that all frequencies arrive at your ears simultaneously as much as possible, and (4) that response is as even as possible across the soundfield rather than only sound good in a few sweet spots, just as a few examples. These things do wonders for producing a more transparent sonic image -- you can really hear more of what is going on in a mix than is possible with monitors where those things aren't as controlled. As far as the G Three or G Four the two big differences are going to be in the level of the lowest frequencies (the Four model will play lower frequencies louder) and the total output volume -- the Fours will be able to get noticeably louder than the Threes without distortion or limiting. The experience of going from good studio monitors to great studio monitors is kind of revealing, sort of like find that you've only been hearing 70% of what is there.

@@djp_video Thank you, I can tell you have a lot of passion of audio and studio monitors in general, I love the honest neutral sound, and I don’t mind a bad recording sounding bad, if it means my favourite “mastered” recordings sound even better, I’ve got a small bedroom, do you think going for the fours would be still an acceptable option given their size, if I’m trying to future proof myself from not spending 2k again

@djp_video
@djp_video Год назад
It starts fading in at about 0:34, mostly on the left channel, continues through 1:13. And then again from 1:40 through 2:19, and then from 2:50 through the end. You can hear the isolated tracks at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oUmIIy2hEl8.html (pre-chorus and chorus) and ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oUmIIy2hEl8.html (chorus). The combination of those two parts along with everything else creates a mix with a lot going on and great studio monitors are needed to really be able to hear the individual parts in the mix.

would you recommend these genelecs (or studio monitors in general) outside of professional production? As in, for me, an average guy who just consumes multimedia content (Spotify, Netflix, gaming, etc) on my desktop PC, and is looking for something that is not bass heavy, plasticky mediocre systems like Logitechs and Razers and what have you, and just wants quality audio, is this something that can work for me? Would I notice the sound quality difference between these and Logitechs for example, when I listen to encoded / compressed stuff on the internet?

If they're within your budget and you want to hear your music or other content the way it was heard by the person creating it, go for it! I use studio monitors on my main computer and in my home theater and visitors are blown away by the sound quality.
