Generac 15 kw generator won't start? Two common problems

There are two items on these generators that may not be obvious to the average person like me who only knows the basic troubleshooting steps on air cooled engines.
Problem 1: Generator starts, but won't run after start button released
Problem 2: Generator won't turn over or start even with a fully charged battery. If you're troubleshooting and have this problem, you'll find that there is no voltage going to the starter switch.

If the battery drops below a certain voltage it blows that fuse too. It's like a safety warning to you that if the fuse blows odds are your battery might be not up to snug for it. Had a battery that was a little weak but still good and it kept blowing fuse. Changed battery and fuse stayed good. Hope this helps

Thanks. I spent an hour on the phone with Generac help line and they didn't mention this and told me to buy a new battery. I pulled the fuse and naturally its burned out.

Thanks for this video. Was looking for a fuse ont the front panel and found none... Though also was a bad battery, so charge it.. nothing again.. I was going to replace the ignition switch since nothing happened when pushing the switch and found your video. Found the fuse and looks fried. Will order that and see. Thanks again !!

I have the 17,500 version. If I squirted a little gas in the carb, it would run for a few seconds and then die. Irma is threatening us and I probably spent 4 hours screwing with this. Even took out the carb and cleaned it up. I wondered about that Electric thing. This morning I watched and listened to your youtube posting and I knew exactly what to do. The solenoid was definitely frozen. I pulled out the cylinder and cleaned it with carb cleaner the verified that it worked. I now have a working monster generator. THANKS so much, I'm ready for Irma now. Steve

I am so grateful to you for this video. I know nothing about generators, and no just a little about small engine repair. But the bigger the motors get the more complicated they are. I ran into the same problem I push the starter but it would not keep running. I pour gas down to third of the carburetor and it would run so I knew it was not a firing problem. I had never come across the solenoid issue before on a carburetor. But sure enough I followed your instructions, and the solenoid was the problem. On my end I had not started the motor frequently enough and waited too long before firing the engine up. So when I pull the solenoid out it was gummed up I could smell how the gas had turned to turpentine. Anyway, was a little cleaning solenoid worked again just fine and the motor started right up. I cannot thank you enough for posting this video. As the last poster stated you’re a godsend. Thank you so much. Lou

I was able to remove the solenoid and cleaned the plunger with carb cleaner. It was really gummed up. Once I freed it up I reinstalled it and started the generator I also drained the bowl. There is a drain tube on the bottom of the carb. Connect a spare piece of fuel line to it. Then turn the screw and it will drain the bowl. You need a cup to catch the old gas in. Thanks.

I have the 17k Ultra Source 4583 but got the same problem. So checked the fuse, its ok. Then I removed the "fuel-shutoff" solenoid, then removed the plunger & put everything back together. Then hit the start button, it fired right up. Was doing some popping & acting like it was about to stop, but kept running. So I hit the idle-control toggle switch on control panel to speed it up. It smoothed out. I've re-started it several times with good results. So I will order this part & replace the bad one. Thank you for this excellent video.

I don't use non ethanol gas and have all my small engines on a 3 week start schedule. If I start on the 14th of the month, next month it gets started and ran on the 7th etc etc. Thanks much for the info on the fuse location and the anti backfire solenoid. I'm familiar with them on my riding mower but have never had an issue. Thanks!
@JustEnjoyingLife73
@JustEnjoyingLife73 Год назад
3 weeks? With a lot of my yearly stuff (like leaf vacuums & snow throwers), I just install a fuel shutoff and run it until the carburetor is dry. Sometimes I drain the tank. Then I can store it as long as I want and not have to worry about the fuel gumming up the insides. I don't think I've ever experienced fuel going bad. I've stored ethanol gas for years in tanks, and it still works (definitely use Stabil). I've even had a car sit on the driveway for a decade, and the fuel worked fine when I started it up (no stabilizer too). I have so many small engines that there's no way I could run them all that often. On these generators (and many others) there is a screw on the side of the carburetor bowl that lets you drain it, and since these have the solenoid, I'd definitely at least run it until it shuts off with the fuel turned off. The residual fuel should evaporate, leaving behind minimal impurities.

Thank you, I had the same problem with the fuse. It was very helpful what you did and selfless. In my case, to top it all, the fuse casing was broken from the factory hard time to remove it. Also from the factory the wire on top of the breaker Of my GP17500e was loose I believe it is what shot the the voltage up and down resulting in various surge protectors and one GFCI outlet to blowup and carbonize. I have a voltage regulator coming in case. It was the culprit. I had a better impression of that company until now. Very difficult to find help if you are a portable generator owner all repair places only do small engine repair, as soon as you mention it is electrical they wont touch it. there are no service manual to be had etc etc. I though a US company would be different than a chinese one.

well well well this guy adrianrog deserves the noble prize, I pick up a 17.5 kw for $1000 that was sitting in someone garage for over 2 years. they use the generator once after a hurricane. They said it won't run and only start with starting fluid they had it check out and was told it need a new carburetor, a $400 job to fix. I new it wasn't nothing major since it would start and run with the starting fluid after seeing your video on the solenoid i had a feeling that was the problem. I took the solenoid out which was stuck in the close position use a little wd 40 to loosening it a few q-tips to clean inside it re-install and VOILA it fired right up...HOT DAMN I JUST CAME UP ON A PRACTICALLY NEW 17.5 KW GENERATOR FOR $1000 BUCKS...THANKS TO YOUR VIDEO YOU HELP ME OUT...now I can sell my brand new duro max duel fuel 12,000 watt generator still in the box for $1000 and try to get my money back

@@tonisam962 not just indoors, don't run it in your garage even if you have high-velocity fans blowing air out with the garage door opened! I did that, and all the carbon monoxide detectors in my house went crazy! I even had a 2000+ CFM attic fan running in the garage along with a 20" high-velocity fan. The other day, I ran my generator on my driveway, and the carbon monoxide detector in the garage detected carbon monoxide! People just don't realize how much of a problem this is. That's probably why you're seeing generators come with CO detectors onboard. Ideally, you should run it as far away from the house as possible.

I had the 17.5 kw version of this generator. It started putting out 130 , and 260 volts, instead of 120 and 240 volts. I went ahead and used it for my function, because it was not terrible high. The next day I went to start it, and it was like the battery was dead. I checked fuse behind the control panel, and it was blown. I changed it several times, and it kept blowing the fuse. It was still under warranty, and took it in. Found out it has a computer that went out. It would have been like $300 if it wasn't under warranty. I never trusted it after that and sold it

I have a 17500 that runs for about 5 seconds and then shuts off. I tried disconnecting and shorting the oil pressure sensor, and that didn't help. The carb is rebuilt. The gas is fresh. All fuel filters and fuel lines have been replaced. The shutoff valve/filter is replaced. The solenoid is clean. It starts fine every time but only runs for a few seconds. Any idea what could be causing this? Let's assume it's not a fuel problem.
@JustEnjoyingLife73

Just figured it out. It was the idle set screw. It was adjusted too far in, so I guess since the computer couldn't lower the RPM, it shut off the engine. After I backed out the screw, everything was fine.

I had a problem with GP17500E that would start but would shut down after releasing the switch.I thought it might be the oil pressure switch so I disconnected the switch. It started and ran for 10 seconds and then shut down. Doing exactly the opposite of what it should do. I connected it back and it started doing the same thing. I was able to get it to start and stay running by removing the negative cable on the battery for a couple of minutes then reconnected it. I basically rebooted the control board that controls the engine shutdowns.

I have the 17500e. It cranks but won’t hit. New plugs. New diaphragm fuel pump. Plugs are dry. Which I suspect the solenoid wasn’t opening to allow fuel into the intake. I checked for voltage at the solenoid and found none. Traced the hot wire “14” to the front panel and it eventually enters the voltage regulator. Im suspecting a faulty regulator but contacted an authorized generac repair center get theory of operation. Reluctant to throw 100 bucks at a suspicion. But i think it’s accurately assessed.

I could bypass the fuel inlet and feed fuel directly into the chamber and it would not run. But the solenoid had become stuck and would not actuate the valve. Thank you! Mine wouldn't start. I removed the solenoid and it was stuck. It's a poor quality . If you need your generator running now and cant wait for parts , do this: 1) Turn of the fuel using the switch below the tank 2) Remove the panel where the choke is (4 bolts) 3) Unplug the solenoid (read and black wires in a white connector) 4) Remove the solenoid with a deep socket 5) Tap the pointed end of the solenoid. Its probably stuck. Leave it depressed in. 6) Put the solenoid back in. DO NOT RECONNECT THE SOLENOID POWER connector. 7) Put panel back on 8) Turn fuel. 9) Start generator and survive. 10) Order part. Amazon sells the part. Its $30. Search for "Generac Fuel Shut off Solenoid Part# 0E5551"

Why shouldn't you reconnect the power? If it frees itself, it won't let you turn it on. What you should do is spray the plunger with some carb cleaner. That should be all it takes to fix it. If you want to bypass it, just pull out the plunger and leave it out but be prepared for possible backfire. That's why it's there.

Im looking into surge and low voltage issue. Looks like the electronic govenor/speed control. The more i moved it back and forth the better it runs but still drops voltage while running.

Those problems sound bad for Generac...neither should have happened. Did the carburetor bowl have any dirt/gunk in it? I've been running the fuel out of my generator (running it till it stalls). I'm paranoid of flooding the engine/crankcase if I don't make a habit of it.

I also like to turn the gas off and let my generator run out of gas, just to be safe. I also use ethanol free fuel in all my outdoor equipment, with Stabil. There was no gunk in the carburetor bowl, it was very clean. The solenoid plunger wasn't stuck either, it moved freely when I pushed or pulled it. It just wouldn't operate. I really can't explain the fuse. I suppose I'm glad there is a fuse there to protect components inside the control panel, I just wish it had been located somewhere that you could see.

I'm thinking of going out of my way to get some of that ethanol free fuel. I'm always buying used equipment, and my 2 cycle engines are especially picky. I'm costantly messing with carburators...

Nicholas Smerk All of my carb problems went away when I switched to ethanol free fuel and Stabil. It's a little more expensive, but totally worth it. I bought 17 gallons Sunday and got four new gas cans today that I'll fill this weekend.
