That stator looked new, the brushes looked pretty damned new and the bolts on the cover had been recently opened. Someone got this, put in the new bits but it didn't work because they replaced the wires wrong. Thinking it was the same problem as before, they sold it on with some story about it suddenly stopping.

My favourite experience was repairing a generator for a shop (motorcycle but they kept having generators brought in) back when I had never seen the inside of one before and didn’t know what an avr was or did, let alone much about brushes (I must have pulled them, it was so long ago I forget), lucky for me the owner already did all the textbook repairs, which meant everything I didn’t know was known good (I still suspected the “black box thing” now known as the avr to have been damaged by the initial failure, cause and effect are difficult) so I poked around, pulled the stator (while having one of my first experiences with marijuana, otherwise I would likely have asked about going that far in) then I brought the stator to the guy and had the generator all packed up, he said if I can fix it to go ahead because otherwise he would have to pay XXX for a replacement from eBay (I was a bit nervous because failure meant he may miss the sale and not find one again) brought it back, tore the coverings off the wires, used varsol to soften the varnish, I think I used some acetone too? Not sure, found the break (connection between the wires and the windings, child’s play) and then realized I couldn’t connect it back because the winding went under the rest of the windings, checked from the known break to make sure it was the actual break and not my fault, the other side was broken, or something else (my thoughts at the time, but it was just the other side), took a risk and opened that side up too, it was broken, allowed mild internal panic to wash over me (maybe I broke them both, and this wasn’t the problem?) as I tried to get continuity between the ends, sanded the varnish a bit and got continuity, and salvation. Next was the actual repair, so I headed to town, grabbed some light blow fuse holders, or whatever they call them, mainly because I couldn’t find another source of wire strong enough without going to the city (100-150km trip), conveniently though that would allow a easy to replace failure point and flexibility, so I soldered the connections up and started the next step. I put it (the stator) all back together and it had an intermittent connection...., took it apart and made it cleaner and wrapped the wires in a way that made a mechanical connection, using the solder just to hold them stiff, popped some non light fuses in and threw it together, fired it up and tested with a vacuum, all was good, sent it off to the shop I got it from and traded the work for a carb sync for my dads bike (possibly a tuning too? The person was vague even before the generator thing). Last I heard about it, he sent it up North to family to have it as the generator there (unsure if backup or as constant use)
