It was my privilege and honor to have served with General (then Major) Mundy in Vietnam in 1967. He was a fine Marine and a truly great human being. The Corps did well to honor him and his dedication to Corps and country.
I joined the United States Marine Corps in 1968 at age 17. I was five foot seven and weighed 119 pounds. I was told that I would never make it though Basic Training. I was told you are under weight and you will fail. I did what was required to earn the title MARINE. I am 70 years old now and I served in the Uniform of my Country every day from June, 1968 to January 1995 (27 years)I learned so much about life, honor, commitment and pride because of heroes like General MUNDY. The Marine Corps and my Country has given me more than I could EVER REPAY. I am proud to claim the title UNITED STATES MARINE. To all who wear or have worn the Globe & Anchor SEMPER FI!!👊🏻👊🏻 GOD BLESS AMERICA!!👊🏻🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 GOD BLESS GENERAL MUNDY !🙏🇺🇸BLESS CHESTY WHEREVER YOU ARE!!👊🏻🇺🇸
Not a Marine. I was Army for 26 years. This day of honor for a beloved Commandant, is inspirational. On that day, I pray I have 1/10 of the friends and military Brothers see me off with fond memories, as GEN Mundy.
I saw a soldier kneeling down, for this was the first quiet place he had found. He had traveled through jungles, rivers and mud He'd tasted sweat and shed his blood. He folded his hands and looked to the sky I saw his tears, as they welled in his eyes. He spoke to God, and this is what he said "God Bless my men, who now lie dead; I know not what You have in mind, but when You judge them, please be kind when they come before You, they will be poorly dressed but they'll walk proudly, for they have done their best. Their boots will be muddy and their clothes all torn but these clothes they have so proudly worn. Their hearts will be still and cold inside, for they have fought their best and did so with pride. So please take care of them as they pass Your way the price of freedom they've already paid."
Thanks be to God this nation and her Marines still know how to pay homage to a fallen warrior. Rest in peace, General. Your Marines will take it from here.
too bad, so many other heroes do not get a furneral like this. so for me this is a burial for everyone who had served under their command and is now forgotten. semper fie to an officer i will always be proud to have served with
Tristan Hays I'm guessing around 2026, I've still got some years until I'm eligible and then there's training and there's a few things I'd like to experience before going off to the military
Well performed by all, especially the Firing Squad, does not get any better than that! A past member of the US Army’s “Old Guard”, and of the First Cavalry, Vietnam 1967.
If you are a Marine, as I am, and when your time has come, this is one fine, respectful way to allow your family and fellow Marines to say goodbye. God bless you General Mundy, thank for your years of dedicated service. Semper Fidelis.
@@kuatasui1131 You are right! The full latin phrase is this: Semper Fidelis! (Fidelis is often abbreviated to Fi, unfortunately!) Meaning: Semper = always (also: for ever) and Fidelis = Loyalty So the whole sentence means: Loyalty for ever!
I have only just come across this and would ask if you could pass my condolences (Belatedly) to the Generals family. I had the honour of meeting the General back in 1977 (he was a Lieutenant Colonel then (I think)) when I visited the the United States with the Royal Marine Commandos (this was an exchange trip as some US Marines were over in the UK seeing how we did things) and although there were about 20 - 30 of us, he made a point of shaking the hand of each one of us and having a full conversation on an individual basis with every single one of us. He was a true gentleman and Marine, for whom we all came away with the highest respect for.
As a former US Marine myself I have all the respect for you Brits. Our two countries have stood shoulder to shoulder through storm and strife. Continue to march Marine. Carry on.
Had the great honor and privilege to have served for General Mundy when he was CG FMFLANT and I was the resident Naval Officer in the G-3 section. Also knew his son Tim from my time with the 1st MEB in Hawaii. Semper Fi!
I enlisted in the United States marine corps right out of high school and I enjoyed the marine corps immensely thank you general Mundy for your service Semper fi sir
Absolutely beautiful and well done gentlemen!! I'm proud to be American to know we have soldiers like you all in our military!! Thank you for service and sacrifice!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
A true American hero. As a LTC, Army (former SSG), I afford my blessings to the GEN and his family. And, God bless, you Marines are top notch in your dress blues! The best comment I've had as an officer was as a 2LT; Marine NCOs gave me their absolute respect on a joint mission where several men said 'You're top notch for an Army officer.' And it was my Soldiers who earned the words. Yes, I took my then BDU top off to do work too. Is that not praise from absolute American Warriors? More than a joint achievement medal. Thanks for your service, Marines.
Memory still surviving this day, 16AUG2020. Amazing service. Those 6 pall bearers are some of the largest Marines I have seen. And to raise him at the end before laying the Commandant down? P R I D E ! Hoo Yah from a retired Navy man. Well done.
General Mundy gave me and a couple of other officers a tour of his quarters at 8th and I in 1993. On his wall he had a framed note from his college days warning him that if his grades were not better he would be dropped. It motivated him to do better...much better. RIP Commadant. See you at the pearly gates guarding the entrance to heaven. Semper Fidelis!
Rusty Shackelford have a little respect a war is violent no matter what and sadly sometimes war is needed and we need people like this to protect our or other peoples countries
Rusty Shackelford I’m an atheist and I have mutual respect for all religions, but religious nuts like you piss me off. I did not know this general but what I do know is that he was a 100 times better man than you will ever be. Show some respect for the men and woman who give their lives to keep us safe. Keep your religious malarkey out of this and respect this mans final resting place wherever that might be
My parents lived out in the middle of no where. 2 hours from any town of size. But they had an airport that was built by a rich man who flew up to see his daughter. My mother wanted it small, but since my father retired with 2 Stars, the Army thought otherwise. My Brother, myself and my Nephew all uniformed officers. Men who served with my father from Korea to Vietnam showed up, and about a company of soldiers and helicopters for a fly by. Many senior officers as well. This runway was filled with planes and helicopters just for this send off. I have always felt proud of the military on how it treats it's Veterans.
"My mother wanted it small," LOL! Sorry, Colonnel, I meant a :-) ... But honestly, that shows a modestity of character, I mean, your Mom has a sense for keeping both feet on the earth insted of becoming an arrogant "nose-up-SNOB" and that makes her sympathetic in my eyes (although I don't know her, really). She probably was very tired at the end of the day, sure, but you know what? That likely helped her to fall asleep instead of weeping the whole night through... So finally I think it was ok for her too at the end of the day, wasn't it?
I just visited his gravesite last week. General Mundy graduated from Montgomery Alabama and is buried only a few steps away from William Holland Thomas (only white man to be chief of the Cherokees and leader of over 400 Confederate Cherokees).
Howdy Robert! The words in brackets got my attention! I don't know the US-History in details, and even less the tribal history of your redskins. But it makes me curious... I knew there was a confederation of 5 Iroquois tribes and up to today I thought that was the only federal state of native origin. Now you write about a Confederation of Cherokees... Do the Cherokees consist of different tribes? How did William Holland Thomas become their Chief? Was he a Melungeon? According to his name, his Father was of Dutch origins, wasn't he? Was his Mom a squaw or daughter of a squaw or so? Isn't the title of "Chief" hereditary? Was he descendant of a Cherokee Chief? That all sounds pretty unusual and interesting for me, I would really like to learn more about it!
Any military funeral gets to me. However, a Marine's. is especially difficult when it is FULL military honors. When the start with the Marine Corps Hymn at a slowed tempo, I can't help it, tears come to my eyes. Thanks for posting this moving video!!!
Feels the same for me, although I served in another, an allied army. Can't help, but hey, teardrops are a sign of respect at such occasions I think, so long you manage to wipe them away discretely before you make the whole burial society wail and get ready to stand up and lift your right arm for the salute, it's ok I think...
I feel inspired to keep fighting for right because of this video. Thank you and God bless General Mundy and the marine corps. They are our best and brightest and our adversaries absolute worst nightmare 😢.
@@w.p8960 Not necessarily. It's usually proper protocol for law enforcement and firefighters in uniform to salute when it's proper for service members to salute.
When I always hear our Corps Hymn played slowly.. It gives me goose bumps. I envision men in ww2 storming iwo jima, men saving each other at the chosin res, in Vietnam battling in the jungle, all those past Marines who never got the chance to be honored I hope we as a nation are doing the best we can to honor All Marines but especially those whom never got a proper salute and gratitude from this nation.. I am proud to be part of a brotherhood with these great men.. Its a honor and a high privilege which I will never forget or dishonor. Semper Fi General. Thanks for years of dedication to country and Corps.. See ya at the gates. "hand salute" er rah!
Rest in Peace General Mundy. I send my deepest condolences to the Mundy family. Sir, I am sure Heavens Gate was lined with United Stares Marines led by none other than Chesty himself awaiting your arrival. Gone but never forgotten Semper Fidelis!
@Rusty Shackelford regardless of political power or opinion, a veteran is a veteran, and should be treated with respect. Shame on you for dishonoring the Marine corps. Would you do the same if you were talking to a WWII vet? No? Then shut your dirty mouth and show some damn respect.
Still remember Christmas 1990 in Saudi Arabia when the Commandant spent Christmas with his Son who was a platoon Commander with India 3/3 it was awesome to see him from far away.
341 thumbs down? Why? If you are watching this video it stands to reason that you wanted to be here. I served under him in Vietnam in 1969 in the 3rd MARDIV, at FIRE BASE STUD QUANG, TRI PROVINCE SOUTH VIETNAM. To disrespect his funeral is a slap in the face of the all US MARINE CORPS!
Honor Courage Commitment. I remember when CMC Mundy introduced our core values. Also was lucky he was the reviewing officer my first MCRD parade as a Ser O. Semper Fidelis General.
Met him when I was on a med float in 94. The fact that he stopped and talked to us even though his aides were pushing him to go on. He told them I'll go when I'm ready.I have always thought highly of him before that meeting and even more so after.he was what great leader should be and led by example and took no crap..a great commandant to serve under
"I'll go when I'm ready!" - Love it! That's the right way to talk to an Adjutant sticking to his protocol! LOL! Just from this phrase, I would say that this officer had an upright and therefor respectworthy character! What happened to him?
How can 551 people dislike a true American hero disgraceful and disrespectful. This man dedicated his entire adult life to the Corp and his Country. Rest now Marine. We will take it from here.
Sir, You were made of all the "right stuff " to be a Marine's Marine! God has a special love for men like you. RIP General, you have earned it! Semper Fi, Doc J
From one Army Vet to a great Marine and soldier. You have earned a heroes reward. Sleep in peace and disregard the bums who know no better than to treat our heroes with scorn. RVN68-69
That’s one hell of a salute to a Marine. Thank you for your service and rest easy. You are now with your brothers including my dad who is a Force Recon Marine. Semper Fi.
I remember General Mundy came to Camp Schwab on Okinawa 1991, and 1/5 was doing some training there. Afterwards, he spoke to a few of the Marines. Semper Fi. 🫡🇺🇸🦅🌎⚓️
Even though General Mundy and I shared Waynesville, NC as our hometown, I never had the privilege of meeting the man but he was - and still is - deeply respected by me and countless others. I have been to his grave to pay my respect and clean it up after a storm. It sits atop a hill with a view of the mountains. Fair winds and following seas, General. Semper Fidelis, Master Gunnery Sergeant Cooper
you never have seen combat and never had comrades under fire. so there is no wisdom or understanding in you. better shut up and leave this to people who know what tey are talking about
yes you're right i have never been in any of them and i wish people of this planet will never have too , seen too much suffering and killing have u ever realize why we combat and why we under fire , there is no wisdom in teaching war but we must rather understand who profit making war . u better open up Ur mind and realize it .
General Mundy was Commandant before I joined the Corps in 1997. The Commandants are keepers of that ethos that is the architectural keystone of our heritage, mission, and our future as a war fighting institution. We are dependent on their vision to shape every aspect of our beloved Corps. I for one am grateful to Generals Mundy, Gray, & Krulak, Jones & Hagee. What adventures I have had for the leadership and guidance of a Few Good Men. Fair Winds & Following seas, General Mundy.
May I try to help you out of that regret? ;-) Do you know that some young guys regret having signed? Are you aware of all the painful drill and the brainwashing teaching methods you have been spared from? For example: Would you like to be put into a russian or arabic language course which doesn't take 3 years but 3 months only, but in these 3 months they teach you a complete language far beyond the level of the 3 years elsewhere and that from 7 in the morning to 17 (with half an hour for lunch at noon) in the evening and after dinner you gotto learn your massive vocabulary and all the time you always feel hungry, you always are lacking time to sleep and every morning a CPL or a SGT shocks you out of bed at 5 a.m. (in some companies it may be half past 5, but it doesn't really make a difference, you always feel the lack of sleep and food and you always feel groggy the whole 3 months of your initial course through)? Some ask themselves if they have signed a slavetreaty instead of an armed forces contract, see what I mean? Even slaves may have to work from sundawn to sunset, but after sunset they have time to sleep at least... ;-) You can esteem yourself lucky if you don't turn nuts before the exams in such units! And if you fail at the exams, you will never become anything more than P1C... The first term is quite a pain! Ask those who were "leathernecks" why they have this nickname, it is not for nothing! It is not for laughing or for fun either! ... It's for those dutytimes and other malicious rules as: Wakeupsignal at 5 a.m., breakfast at 6, orders of the day at 6:30, duty starts at 7, lunch is from 12 to 12:30, duty goes on til 17, dinner is at 17:30 h, from 18 on until 21 or 22 learning vocabulary in the company rooms, followed by tiding up, then SGTs ctrl. until 22:30, at least 23 and after a short sleep at 5 wakeupsignal again and so on... This lifestyle goes on for minimum 13 weeks! It feels more like a punishment than something you are paid for! To serve in special units always means to suffer in a special way more than others! See what I mean? Don't regret things you can't imagine how cruel they are! Instead here is my tip: Learn russian slowly and well and then get a copy of Alyexandyer Solshyenityns book with this title: Odin dyen' v zhisna Ivan Dyennissovitsha Once you have read this, you may feel better with your actual situation, very likely! And then get a copy of this book from Nikolay Gogol: Revisor Just the "Revisor" is worth all the work of learning russian, it is sooo funny, you will ROFL, promised! ;-)
The General always told it like it was and led by example. No bullcrap from him, the country got weaker when he retired. RIP in General, you were a stellar example of how small town boys can succeed and not give up their morals or discipline for political correctness. A shining example of how the country use to be.
general mundy didn't sacrifice his principles for political correctness! he was a good Christian man,his wife was a great woman and Christian, his daughter Elizabeth is a good Christian woman, and both his sons, brigadier general carl e mundy 3,and colonel sam mundy are outstanding marine officers, good Christian men,and like him real nice guys! general mundy was a great officer and marine and an all around outstanding man! there was nothing wrong at all with general carl mundy jr.i have more respect for him than any marine general ever!
@@bobmowreader5546 His successor was a legacy appointment. I was privileged to have met general Mindy. He was gracious and took the time to talk to lcpl and the enlisted men. A truly fine leader of men
@@johnreed9050 "A legacy appointment"? I don't know of any of the men being discussed here...or doing the discussing. But my only son is a Marine, as was my only uncle. It's very hard to think of the Marines making "a legacy appointment." At 82, it's also very hard to imagine any Marine making such "public" comments as some (not yours) that are recorded here. 8/30/20
RIP General. I miss the pre trump days, when Americans stood together united. A time when as Americans, we respected one another. God Bless General Mundy, May God watch over your family. My father knew you, My Dad served in Vietnam in 1967 & 1968. He has since passed away, He respected you
Please just to help my lacking geographic orientation: Where is "Paris island" located? Do you mean the center of Paris? The "île de la cité" with Notre Dame on it? I don't think so, never heard anyone call it "Paris Island" til yet... Which Island are you talking about? Is there a "Paris Island" in the Pacific?
The Tradition of The United States Marine Corps. The Men this General led carry him to his final resting place on Earth. Simper Fidelis General. OORAH! GOD Jesus welcome you Home to heaven Sir! God bless the USA
At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them lest we forget!!! REST IN PEACE General the marines guarding the gates of heaven will also serve you well
General Mundy was one of my Commandants when I was active duty. I bumped into him in a crowd in 2004 or later, when I was back home in New York when we were both visiting Ground Zero at the World Trade Center. Our conversation was brief, but he knew which unit I was with. What a coincidence that I discovered this video today on September 11. Fair winds and following seas, General.
Honor to this great Man. Genaral Mundy. Thanks for fighting for free Vietnam. I was born in 1967. Was adopted to norway parents in 1968. Thanks for You fight for freedom. I was born in South Vietnam. But now I live in norway. Hugs to You familiy. Thanks all Mainre heros who give their life for freedom.
