SMS Derfflinger was the lead ship of the final, completed, class of Imperial German battlecruisers. Heavier armed than her predecessors, this ship would prove to be quite a stubborn one. Her refusal to sink even earning the nickname 'Iron Dog' from the British.
In the end, it would be her own crew, not enemy fire that finally sank her. And gave her the unfortunate distinction of spending more time upside down than upright.

I like how Derfflinger was so badass that her enemies gave her a positive nickname. Truly an impressive ship.

The most beautiful of WW1 warships in my opinion. Reaching the 2 forward, 2 aft town turret configuration, low freeboard. A picture of speed, of power and of grace

The Derfflinger class is, to me, the most attractive class of capital ships produced during WWI and into the immediate post-war era. Perhaps the most prominent aspect of their design is that, despite being _German_ battlecruisers, they have a distinctly cruiser type hull form. This is a huge departue from the battleship type hull forms of earlier German battlecruisers.

Excellent video. Thank you so much. Amazing, how SMS Derflingger, the old iron dog, was the last capital ship to be salvaged at Scapa in 1939 but spent ww2 upside down in her salvage cradle until 1946 when she could finally be moved and scrapped. Her upturned hulk showed up in German Luwftawafife recon photos of Scapa flow in late 1939. One can only imagine if the sight of this once mighty imperial vessel, keel up, the last of a much more vast navy from the previous futile struggle, gave pause to the younger German generation now at war again. SMS Hindenburg, unlike so many of the rest of the scuttled battleships and battle cruisers, sank upright. She at least had the dignity of sailing even keeled to the breakers (minus a bit of her super structure and guns due to weight). Just more wastage that war begets. Of course, one wonders, if she had been salvaged a bit later, might her hull have been useful for conversion into something like a small carrier rather than scrapping? Or would it have been useless to attempt to repurpose a vessel after it had been underwater for so long?

I've read that during the war the German navy had serious problems with low quality coal. German ships routinely failed to reach their maximum speed and klinker build up in their boilers ment the High Seas Fleet was always on the back foot.

@@viktorjoachimmoscoso6327 Fair, i dont really care for meta or high efficiency gameplay. I just like sailing towards my demise in a ship i like looking at or historically interests me.

Honestly I am far, far less impressed by the "Invincible" German BC's than many. Though hit by a large number of heavy shells, the British AP shells had defective fuses which exploded on contact, inflicting mostly superficial damage against ships which had near Battleship level armour, yet were basically hors de combat at the end of Jutland. In contrast British BC's had far lighter armour and were hit by almost as many AP shells which performed exactly as they were designed to, yet Lion and Tiger (at the end of Jutland) were still at sea, still combat effective and eager to fight while the much over vaunted German ships barely made it back. Indeed Seydlitz sank due to combat damage but it was in such shallow water clsoe to home she was able to be salvaged, so she should be counted as a combat loss. The British losses can be attributed to either poor propellant design or (in the case of the I's) having armour never meant to face battleship grade guns.

seydlitz did not sink.

@@AndreasKonig-qq7yk Ship hit the Ocean floor due to progressive flooding cause by combat damage. In my book that counts as SUNK! but later salvaged due to the water being shallow, much like the later ships sunk at Pearl Harbor. If the water had been deeper or further from home she would have been unrecoverable. Or did her crew scuttle the ship as is the usual German BS for all their ships sunk in battle

Don't forget the abysmally bad british gunnery!
@johnfisher9692
@johnfisher9692 2 месяца назад
@@AndreasKonig-qq7yk True the British BC's gunnery was bad because they could not practice at their base at Rosyth. The Grand Fleet's gunnery was excellent, Iron Duke had the best hit record of either fleet. The Germans had the huge advantage of being able to safely go to sea in the Baltic to practice yet at the end of the battle jus whose ships were battered wrecks running squealing for home an whose ships were still at sea, combat capable and looking to renew the battle? It wasn't 1st SG of the HSF was it?

@@johnfisher9692 ever heard of the death ride of the german battle cruisers at jutland? 4 of them ran straight towards the british battle line to sacrifice themselves. at their closest approach they where less than 10km away from the full brunt of the grand fleet. two of them (moltke and von der tann) did not receive a single hit! that good was british gunnery.

Blew her turbines. Sounds like some of my girlfriends. Seriously though, our vessel blew its turbine about 240 miles south of NZ. A 24 hour steam to port took over five days, because we could only make about three knots. Close to port a northerly blew in and began pushing us backwards, so tugs steamed out to tow us in. A very boring five days, but the crew did get a night in port. Crews tend to be very reckless with money. Months worth of income can get blown during a port call. My wife was worse with money though. After three seven week trips at sea there was not enough in my account to pay for a round of beers in port. She had spent the lot living like a princess (about $45,000 NZD). I got a separate bank account for my wages, so arrived home after my next trip at sea to an empty house and a pile of unpaid bills on the floor. At least my mechanic refused to give her my Harley that was in his workshop (it took a while to get my guitar stuff back, e.g., a custom shop Gibson Les Paul etc). I am older and wiser now though -- hopefully at least. P.S. She was German, but I have not thought up a maritime related nickname for her yet.
