Steve Hackett’s work in Genesis is really the secret weapon on their success. In fact, the final record he did with the band has some of his best work with Genesis. He seemed unleashed and was playing more creatively and freely. I’d love to have seen his influence on Genesis during their mega successful years. I think Steve would have added more depth to the band instead of it being a pop music factory under Phil Collins.

We're fairly close in our evaluations, but I think Trick of the Tail should have been #1 (personal opinion). Dance on a Volcano will always be my 1 song of all time. I was done with this band after Duke...the albums with Hackett and Gabriel were the best in my opinion
@quaid667
@quaid667 3 года назад
There are particular songs they did after that album that are among their best. Keep in mind, the commercial line up didn't have the tension of personalities there was with Gabriel and Hackett. Banks, Rutherford and Collins got along famously. So the music that came out lack tension. It doesn't necessarily mean the music sucked at that point

A Prog Masterpiece ). 5-Foxtrot( Suppers Ready is considered their masterpiece and rightfully so. Can/Utility and Watcher of the Skies are great as well ). 6-Wind and Wuthering( Hackett’s Finally and a Great Album.... One for The Vine, All in a Mouses night are Tony written masterpieces. Blood on The Rooftops is a Steve and Phil Masterpiece. 7-Trespass- Underrated and Their masterpiece with Anthony Phillip’s who was superb and unique in his own right. Good job, Starman. Unquestionably the top 4 are: Selling England, Foxtrot, The Lamb and Nursery Cryme. However, I would have ranked them in that order, perhaps with Foxtrot and The Lamb tied. The next 3 are definitely Trick, Wind & Wuthering and Then There Were Three, in that order, as you have it. Then Trespass and then Duke, as you have it. After that, it doesn't much matter. Underrated tracks of the top albums are: Battle of Epping Forest on Selling England (superb Gabriel vocal here), Can-Utility and the Coastliners on Foxtrot, It on The Lamb, and Fountain of Salmacis on Nursey Cryme. In terms of the most listenable from start to finish, that would be Selling England, Foxtrot and Nursery Cryme. The Lamb, had it been a single album of the best tracks on it, would have been their greatest album and one of the greatest pop albums ever.

Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. I put Lamb Lies Down on Broadway at 4 because Gabriel's voice is a bit rougher though still really impressive, but I miss his tender and more comical touches that were on the earlier three albums and I also miss the classical and lead licks by Steve Hackett which were less prevalent on this album.

I really love "Genesis" (yellow album), my favourite album of the Collins era. My alltime favourite is "The Lamb lies down on Broadway" and there is of course "Genesis Live". One last thing: I've seen the "Calling all Stations" tour in Dortmund / Germany and it was great! Ray Wilson is a fantastic singer, especially his performance of "Calling all Stations" and "The Carpet Crawlers" was awesome.

I'm a lifelong Genesis fan and generally agree with Starman's order, except when he ranked And Then There Were Three as better than Duke. As a matter of fact, I find And Then There Were Three their least accessible of the 1975-1981 era albums from a melodic and rhythmic standpoint. I feel that Duke has a wonderful combination of melody, beat, rhythm, a touch of prog, and Phil's best vocal work with the band . I know we're all entitled to our own opinion, but I'm actually shaking my head that Starman ranked And Then There Were Three ahead of Duke.

There is no worst on this list... least best maybe. Here's mine: 15 - From Genesis to Revelation 14 - Calling all Stations 13 - Abacab - Lacks focus 12 - Invisible Touch - Some great songs, but overall too 80's produced. However, where it not for Invisible Touch, a large number of fans may never have found their music... myself included. 11 - Trespass 10 - Genesis 9 - We Can't Dance 8 - Selling England by the Pound 7 - Duke - Great pop songs. 6 - And Then There were Three - The best of both prog and pop 5 - Wind and Wuthering - Some of the most hauntingly beautiful music ever made. 4 - Nursery Cryme 3 - Foxtrot 2 - A Trick of the Tale 1 - The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway It's really neat to see how close our lists are (I wrote my list before watching the video). Funny story... I started being a Genesis fan when Invisible Touch (and Peter and Phils solo output in '85) was getting heavy airplay, and a friend's Dad had records from this "new" band Genesis. That led me to Dodo, which was absolutely amazing, and I bought 3 Sides Live which cemented my love for the band (and therefore the pop-ier work that was contained on it). During a Christmas Break in a big city, I found a couple of records that looked similar so I grabbed them both... Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot. I hated them. After a few years though, things swapped, and as you can see from my list, the pop songs grabbed me, but the prog songs kept me. I can't imagine what my teen years would have been like without Genesis. thanks for the great video!

I have a soft spot for Invisible Touch. Sure it's cheesy and a little superficial, but as a pop 80's album, it is among the best of them, I even like it a little more than Duke. I bet if it came out as just a Phil Collins solo album or if it was by somebody else, it would be held in higher regard. Aside from that, I will always consider The Lamb as their best album, even though it took me several listens to "get it", and Supper's Ready is their best song and one of the best songs ever made. I still can't get into Wind and Wuthering for some reason. It sounds great, and I like Tony Banks going hard on the unique synth sounds, but the songs just aren't there. Every song sounds the same to me.

1. Trespass (Unique, underrated and beautiful. For me this album has a mysterious quality that is hard to describe, almost as if it is from another time) 2. Nursery Cryme (Genesis at their prog best) 3. From Genesis to revelation (Again, underrated and beautiful. I'm sure it won't be everyone's cup of tea but again this album feels unusual to me, some of the songs sound like they could have been written 100s of years ago if you know what i mean, just the atmosphere they create) For me, the top 3 rotate depending on my mood. So they could be in any order. 4. A Trick of The Tail. (First Genesis album I heard so have a soft spot for it) 5. The lamb lies down (Awesome) 6. Selling England by the pound (again, awesome) 7. Foxtrot (Mostly Awesome) For me, there is a huge drop in quality for the albums that follow. The previous 7 are all in my top 20 favourite albums. 8. Wind and Wuthering (Pockets of awesome. I like Eleventh earl of mar and afterglow, but find myself skipping the rest) 9. And then there were three. (Follow you follow me is nice) 10. Calling all stations (To me its a decent album, if it was released with another band name) 11. Duke (meh) 12. Genesis (Meh +1) 13. Invisible touch ( The height of Cheesey pop genesis) 14. We Can't dance ( at this point there are many things they can't do) 15. Abacab. (Who dunnit is unforgivable. Dodo-Lurker sounds cool and I think Abacab itself is ok, but if I never heard the album for the rest of my life I can't say it would be a great shame)

Abacab is one of my favoritess. I really don't understand the hate for who dunnit, I think it's hilarious. The band was having fun making something stupid and I can appreciate that. I love all their work besides Calling All Stations but not every Genesis track has to be some pretentious 7+ minute epic. Obviously they did not take themselves too seriously so I don't know why everyone else does.
@TobyRoberts
@TobyRoberts 3 года назад
@@Chrono86 Well the 7 minute + songs usually sound like some effort went into them. Who dunnit sounds to me like they wrote about 30 seconds of music for a laugh and then stretched it out into a 3 and a half minute monstrosity. it's one of the most repetitive songs I've ever heard. For such a short track, it's incredibly boring. I liked it when i was about 8 years old but now it just sounds like very lazy writing, like they wanted an extra track for the album and were just desperate to fill it with anything. I think there is a difference between not taking themselves seriously (for example wearing a dress and fox mask on stage) and just very lazy songwriting.

Pretty much the same order I would have come up with, although I would have gone with a different top 3 (1. Selling England By The Pound, 2. Foxtrot, 3. The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway). Originally, "A Trick Of The Tail" was my favorite because it was the first Genesis album I listened to. I was 10 years-old. It had an enormous influence on me. It is later, when I subsequently listened to the earlier albums that I changed my mind.

The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is what separates Genesis from Yes or any of their contemporaries. The album is incomparable to anything else. I never understood why the band members of Genesis didn’t recognize that it was such a great accomplishment and would become one of the greatest masterpieces in Prog history. I really love Selling England by the Pound and Foxtrot. Listening to The Musical Box from Nursery Cryme was one of the most mind blowing moments in my life as far as music goes. However there is a third group that back in 74 I fell into which was I found it a shock yes, but a surprisingly interesting one that I neither liked nor disliked at that time. Long time fan. My ranking, fwiw: 15. From Genesis to Revelation - sigh. They tried. 14. Calling All Stations - sigh. I wish they'd stopped trying. 13. Trespass - The Knife Is great, but the sound is awful and it's not overall a great record 12. We Can't Dance - I'm probably underrating this, but I was pretty much done by this point. 11. Invisible Touch - Domino and The Brazillian are great. In Too Deep is their best ballad. Too much filler. 10. ...And Then There Were Three - A really good album without the high points of the ones after this. 9. Genesis - with all due respect, "Illegal Alien" is the worst song they ever recorded, but Second Home By The Sea makes up for a lot 8. Nursery Cryme - love it, but other than "The Musical Box", not tremendously memorable 7. Abacab - aside from that one song, a very strong album especially the opening tracks on each side 6. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway - would have been a great single album, WAY too much filler and the story makes no sense. You can tell Peter had lost interest. 5. Foxtrot - The first truly great one IMO. Peter's vocals never sounded better. 4. Duke - The album that defined 80s Genesis. Phil's vocals and drumming are absolutely at their best here. 3. Wind & Wuthering - see below 2. A Trick of the Tail - The two 1976 releases, treated as a double album, absolutely blow The Lamb out of the water. Sorry, but the songs are better and every bit as "prog." 1. Selling England by the Pound - I'm biased because of Firth of Fifth and The Cinema Show.

Thank you for commenting! That is an interesting list. However, I can see how Wind & Wuthering good rank so high. One for the Vine I think is one of my all time favorite Genesis tracks.

Your list is very similar to mine. Wind & Wuthering's so underrated, with Eleventh Earl of Mar, One for the Vine, Blood on the Rooftops (best Steve Hackett song for Genesis), and of course, the epic instrumental leading into Afterglow.

I don't think I've ever heard them do that live, not even during Hackett's Genesis Revisited shows. It's a shame too, it's a great song.

My ranking can change any day, since I love Genesis so much, they're maybe my favorite band of all time (but I can't decide between it and Pink Floyd) But this is my ranking right now: 15- From Genesis to Revelation gap between bad and listenable (perhaps too harsh) 14- Calling All Stations 13- Invisible Touch gap between listenable and ok (perhaps too harsh again but I don't know words to describe it another way) 12- Trespass 11- Genesis 10- Abacab 9- We Can't Dance (good record but gotta admit that fading lights being my favorite genesis song along with duke's travels is what prevents me from putting it lower than trespass at 12) gap between ok and good 8- And Then There Were Three (the most underrated one) 7- Foxtrot 6- Selling England by the Pound (I know, it's the one that nearly everyone thinks it's their best, but an album like this being in sixth just proves how much Genesis were gifted by God) 5- Wind And Wuthering 4- Nursery Cryme gap between good and PERFECT 3- A Trick of the Tail 2- Duke 1- The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway

I got into them seriously back in 1983 as a teenager. First album I bought was Duke, which is the perfect starting point. I did turn away from it once exposed to the earlier works. The Lamb was the next I listened to and it rather shocked me given all I’d heard until then was their more commercial stuff. But the best albums do unsettle you at first. Easily the album that had the most immediate and profound impact was Foxtrot. I was mesmerised by it, particularly the opening haunting mellotron.But once I got seriously into the prog scene I realised that Foxtrot hasn’t aged so well. Even so for a naive 17 year old, it was an amazing musical journey into a bygone era.

Who Dunnit is a funny thing, I like it. Obviously it needs to be received as a kind of experimental fantasy, but it's not so simple and it works. Your classification is sustainable. With that kind of exercice, I think it's important to explain the criteria we follow up to judge the quality. It must be the pleasure we get listening to an album, or the musical quality of the composition, or the versatility of the musicians, etc. To give an example, I prove much pleasure listening to «From Genesis...» than for «Calling all Stations», but if I'm objective I must agree that the latter presents a higher standard of musical qualities. I don't understand why many people don't like «More Fool Me». In my point of view, this little song fits very well. SEBTP is the first Genesis album I listened to (a moment of great emotion). Surely, I was blowned by the first track, Firth of Fifth, The Battle an Cinema Show, but I never considered «More Fool Me» as something superfluous or unsignificant. I liked that simple, acoustic, sentimental and almost meditative pause between two epic numbers. Once I tried to reproduce it and I can tell you it's not so easy to play. Thanks for your propositions and your openmindedness.
