The Sega Genesis model 3 was the last version of the console that was released in North America. It's missing many of the features that the earlier models possess, including 32x and Sega Master System compatibility. On this episode of Fix It Friday we will show you how to upgrade your Genesis model 3!

True but just buy a cheap Model 1 or 2 and there will be no need for modding. It's interesting that the potential for the 32X is there though.

Other than enable the sound of course, what do the 75ohm resistors do. Thx in adv. I guess im just wondering why you wouldnt just wire it without. Sorry if its a dumb question

I opened up my sega genesis 3 and I had a va2. At least I have Virtua racing and game genie support back

I see a lot of test points and pads along the traces around the chip, could be easier than soldering straight to the pins if they are available on the lines you are connecting.

Yeah they were a little too long lol. I had to leave my iron there more time than normal because there was very little space under the cart slot. So the insulation melted a little too mich

@@LIRetroGaming in that case I'd probably suggest something like kynar wire where the insulation wouldn't shrink back.

Silicone wire is also good as it doesn't melt as easy and it's very flexible.

I think I heard the right resistors but anyone else get what resistor to get? I thought I heard 75ohm resistor but then picture says 82? Which one is it

The resistors added to b1 and b3 is this for circuit protection or to level audio. For now I just ran some jumper wires to get sega cd audio working with an everdrive. Cd audio works but the onboard sound is way too quiet. It is fine in regular genesis roms. What is the purpose of cutting the trace?

Does sega cd audio work with these mods? Wanting to use the mega everdrive pro, and hopefully play everything through that, as well as use original hardware.

Yes Sega CD audio will work with this mod. Another option that is even better is to do the triple bypass mod, and that’s something that I will cover in a future video!

Yes, there is a separate mod that makes that game work on the Nomad. I will have to cover that in another video!

I have this, the Sega CD sound mod and the SMS mod long with a new screen on my Nomad. Im guessing this means a 32x will work on it.

I'm trying to perform this install on a Genesis 3 would love to have the pinout for the 315-5960 ASIC. Obviously pin 1 is labeled on the board but would make it a lot easier. Sadly the Terraonion forums have been pushed to discord and didn't see this on there

I seriously hate how these companies move their support forums to discord to hide issues from being googleable. Discord search is the worst, and everything is just in huge linear threads, as opposed to being separated by each individual question/issue.

There's a Tweet by Will's Console Modifications (WillConsole) asking for the pinout, someone replied with an XLSX spreadsheet that supposedly lists it. If you search for the 315-5960 ASIC pinout on Google, it should appear.

I heard someone say that the Genesis 3 does actually output stereo sound, but that the AV jack is too tight for the plug to go in enough to make full contact. Previously I had heard someone say that some Genesis 3s output stereo and others mono.

I’m pretty sure that all of them output mono sound only. One of these days I really need to do a triple bypass video for a genesis three

Out of curiosity why do you suppose they didn't simply connect those traces to the ASIC if that's all that needed to happen to allow 32X compatibility? seems like the cost difference would have been next to nothing at all - just connecting the cartridge connector pins with traces to the chip...

My guess is because Sega figured nobody wanted it seeing as how hard the CD and 32x flopped in sales numbers, and anyone buying a Genesis at this point wouldn't care.

Yes they will work with these modifications

But even though it has RGB all of the signals coming out of these are bad. Fixing the audio and video components would be more interesting to me.

The RGB can definitely be improved with something like a triple bypass mod. But of course I am limited to whatever my customer wants. This person does not use RGB as part of his set up and therefore did not need it
