The Sega Genesis/Mega Drive is a must-have console for any retro gamer and many hardware revisions of the system were released during its lifespan. Unfortunately there are huge differences in the video/audio quality of these hardware revisions. Fortunately, the Triple Bypass mod is now available to dramatically improve the RGB and audio output of your Sega Genesis! In this video we install the triple bypass in a Genesis model two VA3 motherboard.
Check out 1uprestorations.com/ to have this mod installed in your Sega Genesis!

Hello and Thank you! This kind of technical information is golden. As a tip use flush cutters on those caps... no more burned VA's. Also works great on VA2's 315 video chip legs.... ...when in doubt dont lift and burn... use exacto to cut a leg.

Wires organized nice on board in thumbnail

@2:23 Those bodge wires on the power jack are actually stock, I have the same revision board with the same wires... there must have been an undersized trace or something. You may want to add those back to your board. @6:16 "C68" do you mean "C58"? There is no "C68" on this board. Also, do you need to make any disconnections from the video encoder? You disconnected the RGB traces from the AV out port, but the encoder chip is still connected upstream, does that cause interference on the bypass board at all?
@nicwilson89
@nicwilson89 2 года назад
Yup, bodge wires were fairly common on electronics back then when it was a lot more expensive to re-spin a new board if you find a fuckup after manufacturing. Nowadays it's not quite as common in consumer electronics :D
@mer2329
@mer2329 Год назад
@@nicwilson89 looking at my PCB those bodges just conenct back to themselves, same CHUNKY trace. so it should be perfectly fine to remove them. i thought maybe it was bypassing a switched DC Jack, but i just checked that too, and the jack is not a switched jack.

Great video! Could you make a video of modding a Genesis model 1 with a Triple Bypass?

Yes at some point I plan to do that
@IamAlex124
@IamAlex124 3 года назад
Great video !!, the model 1 you are comparing against is that mod free and what revision of the model 1 is it ? I was under the impression that some model 1 consoles have jailbars and I can’t see any in yours thus the question 😊
@LIRetroGaming
@LIRetroGaming 3 года назад
That model one is a VA6 and it’s unmodified. It’s actually the one I’ve had since childhood and somehow it does not have any jailbars. In my experience it seems to be random which model ones have jailbars and which do not

curious about the triply bypass what exactly it bypasses. Does it use any of the capacitors, resistors, opamps, etc in the audio circuit or are you basically just taking the audio coming out of the ASIC and running that straight into the mod? Same question on the video side. Does it use the video encoder, any of the capacitors or resistors or does it take the RGB values straight out of the ASIC, mix them, and run them to the multi-out?
@LIRetroGaming
@LIRetroGaming 3 года назад
The triple bypass takes the RGB, sync, and audio directly from the ASIC and outputs the cleanest and most accurate video/audio signal. You can learn more about it here: www.retrorgb.com/genesistriplebypass.html

Yo man, do you lose composite video? If so is there a way to keep it?
@ttamez
@ttamez 3 года назад
I've seen photos of bottom installs with wires connected to the 5V and csync on the triple bypass board and others without (like in your video). Do you only need to use those if you are not doing a bottom install? I have a VA3 as well, but the old v0.3 ASIC YM3438 triple bypass board. Don't know if that makes a difference.
@LIRetroGaming
@LIRetroGaming 3 года назад
It really depends on how you do the install, and personally I would really like someone to put together a wiki showing the best method for each version of the hardware. But 5v and csync are present on the AV port, so if you connect directly to it on the bottom then you don’t need to add wires for 5v or cSync
@ttamez
@ttamez 3 года назад
@@LIRetroGaming So after looking at all the schematics and figuring out csync it seems with installing like this your composite out (pin 4 of the multi out) is still coming off the genesis video chip. Since the csync goes directly from the VDP to the CXA and multiout, it works fine using SCART cable with csync. But I think if you try to use cvbs as sync ie component cables it might not work, or at least not properly. Maybe someone else can confirm this.
@MsJom123
@MsJom123 Год назад
Did you end up having to lift any pins on the encoder? I did the mod and everything worked fine with a cheap hdmi converter. Then when I plugged it into my Retrotink 5X via SCART I couldn’t get video anymore. People seem to think it is a Csync issue perhaps as most cheap HDMI converters sync on composite.

I always lift the RGB pins on the encoder

The reason, unfortunately, why there is so little information about this mod board is because it's very simple to do without it. Some of the model 1s and model 2s/3s have jailbars through rgb, some. This has already been fixed years ago with a couple of caps when needed which was rare. The audio bypass part, again, an older mod from years ago just for model 1s for a/v output and does basically nothing for the model 2/3. Those models need a fairly complex audio amp board that this mod doesn't have. *Also, specific models of the model 1 have significantly improved audio over the model 2 and some 3s, not all model 1s. None of the model 1s have any significant improvement in rgb, they're identical in fact, over any other model including some model 3s if rgb is included.
