That is some excellent footage of the members during rare interviews! Thank you! Only someone as talented as Phil can say " Eh, Kenny Jones is kinda lame" LOL!
The interviewer is John Roberts, currently with Fox News. Back then, he was referred to as JD Roberts. Growing up in Toronto in the 70's, watching the New Music was inspiring especially just before music videos became overly prevalent.
Jesus wept, that wasn't very kind Phil. Having said that, perhaps he could've said "Kenney Jones wasn't the right drummer for The Who". A fact that had them replace him with Simon Phillips.
I thought for The Who, he was. There's a lot of debate about Kenny and I like him as a drummer and some songs he played were creative like ('Cooks County', 'I've Known No War' or 'Another Tricky Day'), but he also came across as very stiff on others.
No one could fill Keith Moon's shoes so why bother trying was The Who's attitude, but at the time I thought they could have done better than Kenney Jones. He was a good friend to John Entwistle. But a very straight ahead, rather boring player. And I've loved ELP since I was a kid in the 70's, but Carl Palmer has issues with tempo. Sorry. He even speeds up in Heat Of the Moment by Asia. I saw him do a drum clinic in 1988 and he sped up. At a certain point, someone needs to point out there's a difference between playing rubato and just losing the tempo.
