I have to agree. But music had changed by this time. And our "boys" again were classed as the music " dinosaurs" ... class music ALWAYS,ALWAYS. STANDS THE TEST OF TIME!! ???

If they persevered on live shows people would slowly have to recognize the new songs were excellent and the lineup was interesting. The songs grew a lot live. This one is an exemple. But even songs that seemed weaker on the album, like "Alien Afternoon" got bigger onstage.

I really like this vibe. The musical style is so much more edgy and soulful. Calling all stations,dividing line and this are reminiscent of the albums after Gabriel left.

Album sales sucked. CAS only sold 100K copies in the USA and only went Gold in the UK.

@@joeblow2069 So what? The other 2 CEO's could easily have financed another album but they weren't hungry enough any more and the promise of a rejuvenated musically great Genesis died there. And Ray got really screwed.

@@bennyscomin Wow you missed the point. The issue was not them being able to record more. Nobody stopped them. They had standards. Obviously Mike and Tony did not have the heart and motivation to just keep recording and touring.

@@bennyscomin No. Just because they can make an album is not a reason to. There is a certain standard they want to uphold. It was for selfish reasons(My opinion) that they made CAS anyway. The only way they should have continued as Genesis was if they could get Peter or Steve back for an album.

I wonder what could have been if they just got a new lead singer and kept Phil on drums. Phil wasn't that great of a singer in my opinion. His drumming on the other hand ...marvelous.

I truly would LOVE IT if Genesis would return with BOTH Phil Collins AND Ray Wilson...Ray has a GREAT voice and is a GREAT talent. I think it is ludicrous to think that ONLY Phil Collins could be the Genesis lead singer. Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins coexisted for years...why not Phil and Ray - alternating vocals - each writing with Mike and Tony - collaborating with each other. The world would accept Genesis with Phil AND Ray as it did with Peter and Phil...

This album deserved a hell of a lot more positive recognition than it has actually gotten to date. It’s a really good collection of Banks/Rutherford material. Had Collins delivered the lead vocals on the album it would have been a huge worldwide hit. Equally, all of the drum parts would, no doubt, have been done differently by Collins, thereby giving it a slightly different feel. Listening to this over the last 23 years, it has grown on me and I can now see tunes, melodies, subtleties, ideas that surprisingly didn’t jump out at me initially. That was laziness on my part. I really like this album. Pity there wasn’t a follow up to it. I’m Convinced that this “new band” could heaven endured for a long time. But, perhaps Mike and Tony just wanted to wait for Phil to return.

As far as I can recall, Mike didn't want to continue after CAS failed in the US. I can understand, in a way. It's one thing to build an audience when you're in your 20s, but when you're pushing 50, have tasted worldwide success and suddenly have to basically start from zero with almost a new band - I can see how that can be too much. It's not like Mike and Tony were in desperate need for cash or anything at that point. It's just a shame they handled things with Ray the way they did.

Not sure I agree with this. PC understood pop tunes. This is the other side of the musical spectrum. Largely forgettable, slow and not complex rhythmically.

I get where you’re all coming from guys but I must say I do still very much like this album. In fact, I have created my own Calling All Stations album by creating a playlist on my iPhone with just seven of the songs that are on the album. It’s a 48 minute abridged version of CallingCalling All Stations. The tracks that I have chosen are Calling All Stations, Congo, Alien Afternoon, Uncertain Weather, The Dividing Line, There Must Be Some Other Way and finally, One Man’s Fool. It’s much more concise. It flows better and makes for a much more coherent listening experience. Perhaps this should have been the album they released. They could’ve released the other songs on a separate disc as a bonus or in a deluxe version of the album, perhaps with some other b side songs included too. I suppose that’s why a very strong talented producer should always be used, but at that stage in life Genesis wanted to go their own way with this.

I saw the tour in 1998 in Helsinki!! It was the first big gig I ever went. CAS is a special album with great moments such as Tony´s solo on this one..

I think "Uncertain Weather" is my fave. Honorable mention goes to " Not about us", "If that's what you need", "The dividing line" and "There must be some other way". Great album! VERY under-rated !

I like this song, "If that's what you need" and the title track from CAS. Wilson's voice works for this material and the Gabriel songs on this concert. Unfortunately it did not work fo the Collins songs

If only they extended the string synth part between the two rounds of keyboard solos more on the studio version... the fact that it's slightly longer adds to the anticipation and the classic "shivers up the spine" effect. That keyboard solo is not only epic, it's on fire.

They've done it in Poland a few days before. It was amazing version with guitar battle at the beginning, great drum solo and amazing guitar solo by Anthony Drennan at the end. I've posted it. Enjoy :)

I give Tony, Mike, and Ray credit for making the effort and trying to break new artistic ground. They took a big gamble and lost, but at least they tried. It wasn't like they were trying to get rich here. They did it because they are craftsmen who enjoy playing and writing music, and they wanted to start fresh. They played a good deal of fresh material on this tour and gave the old hits an alternate interpretation.

Faltó un "UNIÓN" un album con todos los integrantes, bueno es claro que Peter Gabriel y Steve Hackett son demasiado dificiles, pero al menos con Phil Collins, quién ha dicho que ""Genesis va a continuar aún sin mí"" habría sido un album de estudio genial y la gira con ambos vocalistas turnandose y haciendo temas entre los dos. Hoy esta versión de Genesis sería considerada LA MEJOR BANDA DE ROCK PROGRESIVO DEL MUNDO.

It almost sounds like it was left on the cutting room floor of We Can't Dance. If CAS had more of this, Alien Afternoon, Calling All Stations, and The Dividing Line, I think the album could have been a good post-Collins album.

True..all the stuff from CAS and Gabriel era works. Collins put so much of his own personality to the performance...no one can get even close Phil in terms of emotion. No doubt Phil is the best singer for genesis.

Man... I have such mixed feelings watching this. I'm just sad that this version of Genesis went-out with a whimper... mediocer songs and poor ticket sales. I bet they had a really good album waiting to happen. Oh well. Thanks for posting this! It does make me wanna pull out Calling All Stations again.

Two comments: 1) is it to much to ask for a live album from this line up...I know we got 2 tracks on the BBC sessions, but I'm left wanting to hear more... 2) Mike and Tony should really consider getting Ray again and doing another album and tour as Genesis......record sales be damned...imha....God Bless...

I totally, utterly agree with awcindy and awesomedude, Steve wuold've given the magic of being a TRASCENDENT album, in their music and composition, although Ray made a very good job within his singing style, fans were expecting more from the two virtuosos Tony and Mike, unfortunately, the lack of musicianship in the album is quite evident, nice album though, but I definetly need mooo cowbell! I mean, I NEED MOOO HACKETT, GABRIEL AND COLLINS BABY!

@steev11 As a fan who doesn't play in a band, I can speak with some authority. ;) IMO, Ray was just fine. He brought a certain edge which was needed, and it fit the music and these lyrics. Given time they would have come into their own, but Ray trying to fill Phil's shoes was worse than Phil trying to fill Peter's. Ray was taking the place of a legend, in a legendary band. The tragedy is they seemed to think they weren't as good without Phil, which is bollocks. They had this.

More than missing Phil or Peter, I'm missing Steve Hackett on the Calling All Stations album. We know neither Phil nor Peter wanted anything to do with the band at this point, but if you're going to give prog another shot, why not bring back Steve?

listening to this as they are about to go on tour with ''the last domino.....i thought this episode (CAS tour) was a bit embarassing ''end'' for my favourite band, with the american tour being cancelled....i must retract what i thought, this 2021 is a total embarassment. it should have ended in 2007 with a way to include at least a couple of gabriel AND ray wilson appearance on a couple of gigs. at least they took nic collins who is just as solid as Nir z as you can see on this clip

I agree, the Last Domino tour was really unnecessary, if Phil was physically unable to perform without having to sit in a chair for the entire show, then the tour should never have happened. It was sad to see and as far as I’m concerned it was just a blatant money grab by the band based on the exorbitant price of tickets.

It's a shame the new stuff petered out for whatever reason... they had the drums covered, a huge ask (and out of respect I'll say 99% covered), but the old stuff perhaps became too far removed; there was a vocalist Kevin Gibson (RIP) who fit the old stuff better to me.. but that's just the old stuff. I don't know, but CAS is still a great album.

It was on this lineup's original songs that they could really shine. Just confirms my view that it shouldn't have been called "Genesis," but a new band started up by Tony and Mike.

@HilbertSpace I say that's pure conjecture, about Steve. It sure didn't hurt him to leave the band. I think it depends on when one talks to him as to what he says about it. I don't think anyone got a raw deal myself, I think if Tony and Mike decided they shouldn't continue with Ray, then that was their call to make. I can understand why they did it. It's a shame, because this album has some brilliance to it. I'd of liked them to continue a bit longer.

Daryl Stuermer was with Phil Collins. Chester Thompson asked to join Genesis when Phil Collins left and was rebuffed.

As far as I know, Chester was moving from L.A. to Nashville at that time and he wanted to take some time off from touring all over the word and spend some time with his family. He also didn't play drums on Phil Collins' tours in 1994 and 1997.
