Nature is in the business of “good enough” because good enough is good enough, its enough to get genes passed on. But humans are different, we like to optimize and improve. Since the beginning we’ve made things like agriculture then irrigation, and fertilizers and discovering things like crop breeding and genetics and how to selectively breed properties like size, taste, how well they keep, resistance to environment. Crispr and gene editing is just another step forward that’s just way more precise, so that we don’t have to go through so many generations to improve, whether that be improving their taste, size, efficiency, speed, or nutrient availability. Such insanely cool stuff, and can’t wait to see how it’s used in the mycology field

all the bacteria and microbial life that we are hindering in order to achieve these things would highly disagree with your idea of optomize

Hey Gary, a little off topic here. I have a substrate issue at the moment, that has stumping a lot of folks on a Facebook mushroom group - including Eric Myers. I'd really like to hear your take on this from your lab experience..... So this has happened twice in the past 2 months. A whole run of substrate bags from a barrel steamer, totally dead after grain inoculation. Substate was room temperature when inoculated after sitting sealed for a week. I am confident in my supplier - Seth with MMO. I am confident in my sterile technique - I even take a few more steps than most with a hair net, beard net N95. I am going to take a few of the dead bags and plate out about 10 samples to see what grows. 2 questions: What is your gut feeling about this? And if I do get unusual aggressive bacterial growth would you look at the pictures and tell me what type of bacteria you think it is and how to avoid it? Thanks - Huge fan and loyal customer.

send over an email! It might be too dry? Do you use the same batch of substrates? maybe an issue with that - usually when things stall out it’s moisture or temp.

@kenshields2323 Год назад
Yes. Same batch. I moisture tested it 100g wet dried to 42g. 58% should be good?.... I'm going to take a few samples from some of the bags, mix it with sterile water, put it on about 10 dishes and see what grows.

the button mushroom you are talking about was not a GMO, there are several papers on this why it was not considered a GMO.
@FreshfromtheFarmFungi

semantics - it is altered with crispr
@themyceliumnetwork

@@FreshfromtheFarmFungi I agree with you that it's semantics. (info for the masses) they used crispr to remove a single gene & not combine 2 or more genes to make a "new" GMO. so..... all in all it's still a genetic modification but the geneticists didn't define it as a full blown GMO for the above reason. i am not a geneticist, I am not even a high school graduate LOL (but i get it "semantics") I even know that, no matter what the conversation is, it's good for the algorithm ;)

Who university did you go to for fungi?

Scary thoughts. I'm more of a let nature do it's thing kind of person, and where science can help I'd like to see much more confirmation that disaster isn't an outcome. Maybe that button species now spores out and harms habitat or hangs around longer in places that another fungi *should* have taken it's place. Pushing things like that into products when it's "50/50" in the fact that we know it can help *us* but we have little to no real knowledge of what it's actually doing or going to do down the line, is a little frightening.

Gary!! Like the mycelium we need to come together all of us that have a mushroom buisness or just love mushrooms and create a super company and grow like china and Japan for the people. How can we form a group that can wield the power and money to start something big. China and Japan and I'm sure other countries are doing it. We need to direct the money funnel towards mushrooms and there healing. Let's form a meeting of mushroom growers and make something big. Thanks for helping me all these years I'm very successful now and mushrooms were my destiny as yours my friend.
