Being an all-eras, lifelong fan of the band since seeing the video for Abacab on the then-new MTV channel in 1981 or '82, it feels quite significant to say that I actually prefer y'all's performance of this tune to the original recording. I know they never played this one live and that Tony in particular -- and Peter, too -- weren't very happy with it. I didn't even think it possible, but this performance of the tune just makes me enjoy it all the more. Thank you so much for posting it, Genetics.
I am blown away by the original ending that you all worked out-instead of a fade as on SEBTP, a sweet and moving conclusion on acoustic guitar. Wish you could somehow play the U.S. Fantastic work, lads.
seen this once again today, such a beautiful rendition. As a non-musician the only observation that comes to mind is that while 1-2 of the guys seem to be working so hard at their craft the first guitarist seemed to be playing complex passages with ease - the sign of a master at work! I hope you guys are still together and playing live after this pandemic. Hope to see you one day. By the way, my first ever live gig was SEBTP tour - Genesis in London, October 1973 so this is special for me :)
thank you Alan, you were lucky to be in that gig back in 1973! Yes, we keep the band going, we have already sold 300 tickets for our Genetics Live show, due to happen in May 9... We hope to do it by November.
Did they ever play this live? I can just imagine the five band members, all sitting down delivering this sublime piece, with a haunting, mystical finish by Peter on flute.
