I had absolutely NO IDEA that there was so much controversy surrounding this comeback. I mean props to them though because Genie is iconic and will be forever cemented in kpop history.
As a Sone that week was stressful! Every fan group was out to get SNSD, and wanted to see them fail. SNSD even had haters that made a dedicated youtube channel in English that would only post rumors, out of context clips, and videos about how they're untalented/old, and would flop in Japan. It was called Anti9Angels, and this was back in 2009/2010 when kpop wasn't even popular in the west, and the hate was everywhere! So I cant even imagine the hate train they experienced in Korea. Thankfully they Persevered and became the leaders of their generation. 9 Queens, stay salty!
This is surprising to me 😮. Interesting and sad at the same time. I started listening to them in 2011/2012, when the single "The Boys" was well received, so I thought they had always been a beloved band: friendly singers, talented, with a sense of humor, no members who debuted too early (i.e. 13-14 years old). It got complicated when SM Ent. fired Jessica, but before that it was fine. But it turns out that things weren't always good in the media...
OMG! I couldn’t imagine being a sone back in 09-10 it must of been so hard 😭, especially since they were being dragged ☠️! I’m so glad that they overcame that and now we have even MORE iconic hits 🩷
I was an ELF at the time and honestly, at 10 years old I didn’t know any better and just went with the hate because at the time, ELF-Cass-Triple S were the three biggest and most powerful fandoms in kpop and we were all best friends, so we came together to hate on SNSD, literally no fandom wanted to beef with us cuz we’d just gang up on them. Shit was wild
@SakaiSteven ELFs are one of the toxic fandoms before ARMY. They literally hate all GGs in the era just because they thought they would marry their idols. 😐 Unfortunately for them, SM pushed the collabs of SuJu and SNSD further and doesn't care about ELFs at all.
They instigated a lot of fanwars before, and I really hate them to the bones. That was the reason why I even hated SuJu at the time and stopped listening to their songs.
This is so funny because this shows that kpop hasn’t changed one bit, you’d think that kpop stans would behave differently 10 years ago but absolutely not lmaoo. These controversies could genuinely happen to any 4th gen gg
I would love to see more SNSD era histories lol, it's so easy for this stuff to be forgotten especially since I was so young at the time! I would never have thought genie went through all this since I got into SNSD around 2016
The thing I don't understand is how song writers are expected to not accidentally plagiarise music they've never heard? If I write a song and accidentally give it the same melody as some random french indie artist, does that mean i'm plagiarising it if i've never even heard of the song, let alone the artist or even genre? this is like the fifty fifty controversy over cupid - how are you supposed to know?
I did - once again, what are the chances that literally anyone in SM has heard a random Uzbek party song. I couldn't even find her Spotify, what does that say about how widespread it is?
Every time it's like the internet has just discovered that there are only seven different notes and hundreds of years of written/recorded music. Some songs are going to sound similar to others, even if unintentionally.
i think the point is that no one will ever know/can be sure the person accused actually didn’t know or did it deliberately since we were not there. someone who plagiarized a song can easily say it was a coincidence Of course, not saying EVERY accusation is correct or even founded, just saying why that never gets brought up.
And against all that they went on to their comback stage at music core on the iconic helicopter roof and break korean TV history, and that moment solidified them as the top kpop girl group.
OMG, the most stressful week for Sones worldwide, attacks from all sides. You’d think that after Gee, the haters would pipe-down but NOOO, they were relentless. SNSD overcame all of it though! So proud of them 🩷
@@criatanra both groups are great in their own way, no one will ever take GGS place bc they are truly iconic, since the beginning and still, their discography and talent speaks for it self. also they aren't from jyp, they are from SM so it doesn't even matter what jyp says at all. they are literally the idols of the idols lmao
@@criatanra “I want to be like SNSD” -Hirai Momo(TWICE) Auditioned with SNSD MR.Taxi in JYP -Minatozaki Sana(TWICE). Don’t set up TWICE pls. I love them too and I can tell you’re not even a fan of TWICE. You’re prolly some old Kpop fan who couldn’t handle that their favs were less popular than SNSD during their peak so you use other idols to hate on them. Pls sit down and leave TWICE and SNSD alone.
Woah i had no idea!! I always loved the outfits but looking at it from a new perspective, yeah that can definitely be controversial. Glad it’s an iconic song though, and that it still hit super big. I really had no idea!!!
Whoa thats crazy, I only started becoming a sone during the Oh/Run Devil Run era and did not know about this crazy week! The only part I knew about it was the dress lifting part since I had watched that radio show where yoona explained it, and even then I had no idea that it was that big of a scandal!
@@what3vaaa251it was really bad and you’d have to be on social media very often to hear about this because I was an ELF at the time and the 3 biggest fandoms came together online often and would tear them to shreds, Sones would get attacked left n right
@@annienguyen8369lmao. And we sones are still able to win against yall 3. Lmao: the funniest thing is SNSD literally went to the top after and yall groups started having downfall after. Lmao. KARMA hit yall so bad😂
@@AoDk673 i never said anything about being proud of what ELF did, just stating what happened exactly as it happened 💁♀️ there’s really no point in attacking me now lol
I remember being an ELF during that time, shit was wild. 10 year old me didn’t know any better and just attacked every Sone I came across on Facebook cuz I knew I had 3 fandoms backing me up 😭😭😭😭 now I’m like wtf were you doing
I love hearing about early 2nd gen idol stories! There’s so much I missed because of lack of translations or how young I was at the time. Thanks for the blast from the past.
SM is known for this kind of controversy (military and japan symbolism), they repeated their "mistakes" for red velvet debut, at this point I think its pretty proposital. If you see the controversies over new jeans eta, i feel like its all strategy.
So I only got into SNSD last year, and Genie is my favorite song from there’s along with the album, and overall comeback. So imagine my surprise to all of this information in this video.. I can’t imagine how it would feel to experience all of this real time. This was super informative and interesting!
Omg im so glad. I was OBSESSED WITH THEM like they are still my fave group even if i dont listen as often. All my friwnds are just like ohhhh theyre too old now 🥲
Yes, but those controversies made them to even strived more. Then, SNSD became a household name in SK. And they became iconic and a textbook for girl groups. That's why they will always be legendary. They went through a lot of struggles and controversies before they came to where they are now. Queens 👑
What were they thinking with the outfits for genie?? Those took way too much inspiration from Germany and Japan… definitely valid criticism (not to the girls but to the stylists and company)
@@yeyosilver7067yes but in that case i think you gotta stick with the concept. you can't do a controversial concept and then immediately back down when some people are like "this is in poor taste!" either do it and take the risk or dont do it at all. yknow?
@@JUDE6995 What do you mean just a uniform? Pick up a history book. Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan are 2 of the cruelest regimes in history who killed millions. Their uniforms are not a cute and quirky concept for a K-pop group to do
yes i would say it's between i got a boy and gee, honestly all of their comebacks were and still are iconic, i remember when "The Boys" was announced, companies delayed the comebacks of their groups bc they knew their group was gonna be overshadowed by GG lol but Genie is my favorite too
I became a kpop fan and Sone simultaneously back in January of 2013. Being totally new to the kpop sphere, I didn't know anything about all that went into it like following the variety shows and competitions against other groups, etc. Because I wasn't there during SNSD's formative years, moments like these were never brought to my attention. Thank you so much for the video!
OMG I REMEMBER 😭 it was a very very stressful week for sone.. i remember i couldnt eat well for 3 days and cant focus on school. Even one of our fellow sone was hospitalized because of the back to back pressure caused by the controversy 😭 looking back at it now, i am proud that we all overcome it
I didn’t even know this was so controversial, I was new to kpop during this time & genie is such a wonderful song when I discovered it. I just enjoyed good music back then.
To think all of this happened even before social media was a huge deal - imagine how much worse it would be if it all happened now Rival groups’ fans can be insane sometimes
it's my first time hearing these happened to snsd.... damn when got into kpop on 2011, i got to surrounded myself with photo and video updates - not much interaction with other fans. If i were to be a fan earlier, i can't imagine myself as a kid beefing with internet ppl
I was a pretty casual fan of theirs since their beginning and I knew where I was the day Michael Jackson died, but didn't know that was around the same time as Genie's release. Time flies. I def remembered the Japanese imperialism comments though. Thank God Genie is easily one of the most iconic songs in kpop history.
as some who became a kpop stan during 4th gen i can only imagine what it was like for fans back then like look at what controversies idols go through now so js IMAGINE if this was to happen during 4th gen 🤦🏽♂️
Tbf anything even remotely similar to anything t do with the Japanese imperial army is messed up. It wouldn’t be okay for wearing similar outfits to nazis. What the Japanese did in Unit 731 is comparable to even the worst horrors that the Nazis did in the camps.
That’s crazy too because this song was my all time favorite when this came out I use to blast this on speaker and to this day it’s my jam the vocals the looks just everything about it is my fav
Regarding if Genie/Make a Wish was a copycat or the original: The Wikipedia article uses 3 sources, which are almost word for word the same generic web article, with zero official sources. It seem SM (and thus SNSD) are the right owners, but kinda surprised there isn't a definitive, well sourced article other than people pulling quotes here and there in forums. Didn't know there have been more versions released by other artists, though.
This was the song that put me onto Kpop! I walked into a korean owned shoe store and I just HAD TO find out what that amazing song was that was playing! I was only able to make out " superstar shining star superstar" and found out it was Genie. I had nooooo idea it was in Korean. Can't believe there was all that controversy surrounding it!
I mean SM is known to buy or barrow demo / songs from other people.. but omg. I didn’t realize how much people read into little things. Like really… Jessica mouth moving without hearing what she said, people putting words in her mouth , omg she said “b…ch”. It’s crazy how every little items can be misinterpreted into so many different positive / negative things in the eyes of different people
It's SNSD's reputation era even though Genie happened first. That was a hell week for us SONEs. There could be #GirlsGenerationIsOverParty if it was a thing back then. Lol
To me Genie is the perfect song, with the perfect concept that came out at the perfect time. Their rooftop performance had the biggest TV audience ever for a music show. They killed it and it became their debut single in Japan, where they blew up all over again. Yes, SM bungled a bunch of stuff, but the girls and the song shined thru it all.
Apart from the allegations about fascist symbols on the uniforms and the Japanese plane, the rest doesn't seem controversial to me at all. I the west, these rumours would have improved sales even more
Is it any wonder that Knets blew something out of proportion? It’s a miracle any Kpop groups exist today with the constant bombardment these groups contend with from netizens and toxic fans. Can you imagine not having all of SNSD’s music? The groups that do make it deserve so much respect for their perseverance through training, demanding schedules, and overall toxicity. Kudos to them all!
The medal that Hyoyeon is wearing is fact modelled after the Victoria Cross, awarded to British, British Colonial and Affiliated British Armed Forces for acts of valorous service. It is not the German Iron Cross awarded to German soldiers in World War 1 for valorous service prior to Nazi Germany and World War 2. Clearly, nobody knows anything about search engines, common sense in terms of research or military history. SNSD is one of the greatest K Pop girl groups, the fact that anyone thinks they are out to offend is offensive and I have pity on their worthless black little hearts.
2:10 kpop companies still refuse to do any sort of research about how something may be offensive. How is it possible that they had a plane so similar? They most probably did draw inspiration from that time period.
Honestly all this controversy already proved that they were popularity beasts lmao. Problem was they were still rookies that had to prove themselves to the general public. Once their caliber was cemented to the general publics mind, no hate rumors could shake the groups reputation. GG gave iconic comeback after iconic comeback
omg really?i’m sorry that’s the first time someone has said that,i’m always careful with the sounds so i had no idea, just so that i have a better understanding, were you watching the video with the volume at maximum?
I thought that it only had 6 episodes I never knew it was cancelled for low ratings wow. Thats actually crazy that people were drawing so many comparisons like talk about reaching. I remember the Yoona lifting up Fanys skirt video. I didn't get why she just lift up her skirt like that lmaoo
Have anything even vaguely resembling military, and conspiracy theorists will JUMP at every obscure reference that no one cares about except for loudmouth weirdos
it's crazy to see that cancel culture was a thing even back then, complaining over a WARDROBE MALFUNCTION is wild. Now the covers, and the outfits are understandable because cultural insensitivity is a huge issue within MEDIA as a WHOLE. It's not cute to pose in stuff that can easily send someone into a PTSD episode. The scary thing is people are embracing the "I don't care" attitude of this, and are more than ever going to be doing things that are culturally insensitive (Logon Paul, Suicide Forest, racists selling slave shot gun houses as guest houses on slave plantations, using military as a sexy concept when these same militaries are unaliving human beings, etc.) It's time for us to make new ideas, something less grotesque, insensitive, and alarming to many who have fought too survive only to see it used as a cash grab. Also, what you mentioned about Jessica being cursed out, then also seeing her NEVER returning to SNSD speaks volumes on what we do not know going on behind the scenes with these groups. It looks empowering to see a group of people, being all cool, slaying on stage, talking about power subjects, etc, etc. (x Japan, Malice Mixer, SNSD, Destiny's Child, TLC, Fifth Harmony, New Edition, NWA, The Pussy Cat Dolls, etc. this is a list of groups I know who've clashed, due to member's differences) but we REALLY don't see what goes on behind the scenes with the drama between members, because THEY'RE all individual people and as fans, some of us like to see them as ONE. Right? They came up together as one, suffered as one, and got through a lot as one, and it's sold as such so we can also be like "MAN I want a group of FRIENDS LIKE THAT!" when in reality, it's not ALWAYS sunshine and rainbows. :))))) BUT, they have their own opinions, mindset, etc. They are not the same, entirely when it comes to their customs, their upbringing, so on; so it can CLASH and CLASH most of the time. It makes sense to see Bullying allegations in groups now and days especially since Bullying is OVERLOOKED in a whole globally due to GREED, and gremlin staffs not protecting their students, Ableism, racism, homophobia, or whatever have you. Sorry I was really intrigued by this video and went on a comment spew xD
youre listing a bunch of controversy which were all justified wtf, the concept is nazi and Japanese imperialists and the song was plagiarised, this was horrible
@@lonelust they literally used a plane identical to the Japanese one and had multiple Nazi symbols, stop excusing everything because you like the group, pathetic
@@lonelust they used Japanese exact warplane and Nazi symbols, the girls dont even contribute to the music or concept, so I have no idea why youre trying to defend disgusting things
