Well diagnostics process doesn't always go smoothly. Especially when a good wiring diagram is not available! The struggle is real, but in the end the feeling of victory is priceless :) Enjoy! Ivan Ivan
I have learned a lot from you and Eric O. One of the biggest lessons has been keeping my cool when things go in an "unexpected direction." Even my wife noticed. "You don't swear at the car much anymore. I, and the neighbors, really appreciate that!"
haha yeah I've actually found it more stimulating when a direction unexpectedly changes in a diagnosis. Gets the brain gears turning. But if a bolt shaps off and the diretion changes into a dead end, then swearing may be the only option ;)
Love that you have a massive ability to stay calm after hours of working with the incorrect information and a basic understanding. This video reminds me of a field service call I went on out of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia, the call was to an underground mine named Thunderbox for a bogger that wouldn't run..... I went there at 2am, a 150km drive down dirt tracks with only the knowledge that the machine wiring was spliced in to the power unit wiring with 50 or 60 fire suppression relays and other protection/shutdown relays. 1 hour in I was frustrated, no power to the diagnostic connector, no power at the ECU. I hit the dash out of frustration and everything lit up! 5 minutes later I found a wiring terminal backed out of a connector in the fire suppression system. 6am, I was sitting in a Kalgoorlie hotel (24 hour hotels there) and getting served beer by skimpy barmaids. Kudos to perservering, Ivan 🤘
@canuckguy worried -- A "bogger" is an loader that's designed to operate in underground mines. It has a large scoop in front and it has a very low profile.
First rule of Sanity. If it starts -MOVE IT TO GAIN BETTER ACCESS!! With the covers off, you get a better swing at it with a wrench or big stick.Drove me crazy having to peer in from the side. Crazy. How many times have "we" got things running and then it all goes to pot!! Good Persistent Ivan. I'm sure Mr.O is grinning right now.
Oh my god man! I really appreciate all this effort you put in this tutorial.. thank you! I love this kind of diagnostics, you know like the heater system in your house or the glasses cutting machine of your wife's workplace! Genies! You gotta either love them or hate them!
As always, I'm impressed with the diagnosis and repair. On the other hand, I'm a bit confused and frustrated. You probably felt the same way! Great job Ivan. Thanks!
I feel your pain Ivan. Its like watching a pro golfer hit a bad shot. It proves that information and experience is key to success. Great vidjeo keep them coming.
Ivan, the Genie expert! The word gets around, this guy can fix anything. I know you live for the challenge, been there done that. Good video, keep more coming.
@@billybob042665 Uh, industrial machinery is easy to get schematics for if you have a company backing you. If you are an individual, they sometimes tell you to piss off (really the attitude of what is a civilian doing with industrial equipment. happens mostly with computer stuff, like hobbyists buying real servers). Luckily he is business and could probably get it with ease. But this video was filmed on a Saturday.
@@timramich: YES... Saturday is bad. If it had been business hours, I'd be on the phone to Genie. My experience is that companies like Genie are pretty good about giving up documentation to make field repairs.
I know the feeling working on equipment without a wiring diagram. Left the car business and went to the tree business last year. Was in Springfield ohio middle of the woods and our track log chipper died. Spent a few hours tracing wiring looking for power and grounds which was a pain because it was like airplanes where all the wiring is white with numbers. I had to stop and walk away and smoke a cigg and just start over. Noticed the control panel gauges were all 0's except the fuel level. Unplugged the fuel sender and BOOM whole thing came alive, turned the key and she fired right up. The joy you feel when you conquer something out of what you are use to is like no other. Proud moments. Good job Ivan!
Hey Devon! Haven't heard from you in a while! How is the tree business vs the car business? I rode my Yamaha to Diner 22 the other day, it was awesome :)
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics It was alright, Pay was better but was only home basically one day a week being anywher on the east coast. Had knee injury beginning of the year so couldnt do the work anymore so im back in the car world and boy am I GLAD to be back. Sold the R6 but currently looking to buy another here shortly. Miss diner 22 :)
Yeah it was a good video I just am not sure of posting a video of yourself bypassing what was most likely a bad emergency stop switch and the liability that he has if that machine is involved in an accident. There are two rules to workplace accidents charge everyone and sue everyone with the slightest of association.
Excellent, and very hard work Ivan, pretty tall order diagnosing a ECU controlled engine, with misinformation, ref unobtainable schematic. Thanks for sharing.
Check to see if the emergency stop button is OK & still works . Make sure those 3 relays are all OK . They look identical . So , try swapping them to different sockets . Wyr God bless
Great effort and result. Be sure to keep notes on the game plan that worked for this machine, use Deoxit and then dielectric grease on the pins in the large connector plugs that aren't bolted together to combat both corrosion from exposure to weather and friable corrosion caused by vibration, then get the correct schematic. Thanks for remaining calm when others would have said it's time to cut bait and go home.Good job, Ivan!
Great video again. Ivan, I saw you using a note a long time ago and have since used one on all diags I do, makes a big diff. Dr O prints all used data out so the customer can see what he went through, I do that also.
This boom lift is clearly in use to keep you sharp, Genie threw up their hands a long time ago, trouble shooting this machine without a wiring diagram is a good test of your skills, great job and video
I would also look at E-Stops on that unit. that might be powering the PCM.... I'm pretty more than sure E stop will power down the PCM and won't let you start the unit...
I'll tell you what that's gotta be frustrating, but you're definitely one hell of great problem solver Ivan. Makes a guy have a whole new respect for guys who work on this type of stuff for sure. Great video and hopefully you got out and enjoyed the rest of your weekend man!
Holy crap....that was a tough one Ivan. It's 10 times harder without a simple wiring diagram. Well done for keeping your head & pushing through. Site work is much harder than back in the shop too. Remember it's cases like this that are sent to test us! Great job. Andy
I work on semi truck wiring quite a bit and there is almost never wiring diagrams because they are all different it can be a real pain, great job sticking with it
Hey Ivan that's a typical day for me diagnosis the problem & fixing it by any means necessary. On heavy equipment I prefer numbers on wires with white insulation it makes tracing easier. Especially when diagram doesn't exists.
Sometimes you eat the shark sometimes the shark nibbles on you. Great video! It show the true frustrations a diagnostician will go through. Too many armchair mechanics well think all you have to do is just plug up a scope and go from point A to point B. An old mechanic told me when I started repair work ( 50 years ago) a electrical problem is har to find easy to fix. Mechanical problem is more likely easy to find hard to fix. I find that still true today. lol
At the first, I though the guys probably unplugged the coil, so they could get off early on friday. Thats what we used to do and head to the Topless club Baby.
The weather is nice in Oregon right now, you deserve a change of scene.. I thought a ignition switch fixed a intermittent no start after replacing every part that's electrical on my 22re Toyota truck. Come make a video on this gremlin house!
Way to go Ivan great way to start a Saturday morning. Now I have to put a purge solenoid on my Saturn. Purge and seal no vacuum at tank. Pulled line no vacuum from solenoid. Quick fix no tools required. Keep up the good work. You and Eric O help us Shade tree guys a lot..
Nice work Ivan I very much appreciate your persistence!!! I think you could make a nice living traveling around the country fixing these monstrosities.
Perseverance and great diag. skills win the day. Good job my friend. Absolutely sucks swamp water that you couldn't get the proper wiring diagram. Thanks a lot Genie. 😒...NOT !
Ivan your tenacity makes you win the internet for today. I'd like to know what caused the keep alive power wire to go dead, did you ever trace where its source actually comes from? Six hours of chasing gremlins, at what fee per hour was this call out,, I'd hate to know but it was obviously not cheap.
This is exactly why I get so frustrated working on cars. I can never seem to get the correct info. Sometimes BBB pulls through, but sometimes they have everything except what I'm looking for. Not quite ready financially to buy a subscription to one of the major entities. I had a DIY version of AllData before, and I felt like I was flushing my money down the toilet! Every time I needed info, it would tell me I needed to upgrade! GRRR!! All it did was get my blood pressure sky high. Going to have to do it at some point, but I keep getting hit with bills, failures and repairs of my own junk at a steady pace lately. We'll see what the next year brings. Nice job sticking with it, Ivan! I'd have been losing my mind, expletives echoing off all those buildings, LOL! 😁 Stuff like that gets me madder than hell! Hate not having a good diagram - has to be THE most frustrating thing there is. I won't give up until it's done ... so I'll be out there until 2am sometimes. Then lack of sleep compounds things, and adds even more time. In a perfect world, manufacturers would just let us HAVE this info - you'd think they'd want the name recognition of their older equipment or cars still running out there! Their quest for a buck, and wanting constant new sales takes precedence over everything, I guess ... 😣
Manufacturers should be made to supply a wiring diagram with everything they make..Just like they used to do with old TV,s and Radio,s...there's plenty of places they could stick them.
Having no wiring diagram can be frustrating but believe it or not, it's very common. Too bad you were there on Saturday. You could have called Genie and requested to talk to tech.support. They can e-mail you a proper diagram. It's not like calling Ford or GM. Smaller companies usually keep tech support staff and it's free to customers. BTW, I used to do a lot of troubleshooting of industrial automation, robotics etc. Some places had no current schematics, all 1,000+ wires were the same color and half the wires were missing labels. It could be frustrating, especially when a plant manager is breathing down your neck and looking at his watch. Some plants lost $500 to $1,000 dollars per minute of machine downtime and they were willing to give a "blank check" to get them back up and running ASAP. Even then, it really helps to take a 10-15 minute break every few hours. BTW, a relatively cheap wire tracer can be a "life saver" when trying to id and trace wires. It can also help to find wire breaks in a harness or a wireway. It saved my arse numerous times. I'll leave a link below. Best of luck to you! www.amazon.com/Extech-TG20-Wire-Tracer-Generator/dp/B00APD16D2/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=wire+tracer&qid=1560323105&s=gateway&sr=8-3
I know a lot about those Genie boom lifts form GPS installing them in NY ,as well as Milan, PA, which is now closed, and Wilkes-Barre, Pa for United Rentals. Genie uses multiple harness for their equipment. It’s usually labeled on the harness, or the frame which one was used. Inside some of the ground control panel units they have separate ecu units that will make it not run, too.
I wish I had a dollar for every problem vehicle/equipment that had this problem AND OF COURSE a lack of proper diagrams, wiring and others. Ya, it happens. Obviously, the fuses were good? Perhaps to many people had worked and put bypass wires in it? Is the main harness suffering from broken wires, or damaged wiring or ? Are there "SAFETIES" in the man lift bucket that control this system causing the no start? The ones we had were diesel. I only remember the backup alarm not working on a couple of them. Some oil leaks, but that was it. 6 hours with no documentation, intermittent problems, and ? You got it done Ivan! Hope it doesn't become a thorn in your side anymore!
Your earlier comment was 100% correct. You should be out on your mountain bike. enjoying yourself. Opportunities are a moving train, and you jump on when you can. No proper manual is a a guessing game and can lead to a fried pcm, very quickly. Enjoy your youth while you can !!
Ivan, I was slowly getting stressed out and feeling so sorry for you :-(. I've been there with things that should be easy to fix, but nothing makes any sense and bypassing things is the only fast way forward. I must be russian as well lol, sometimes using relay logic to create a "What/Where/When" bypass :-D. Start looking for the correct diagram now, that dam thing will fail again, we know it lol.
Those things are a pain w/o good info. I have worked on a couple myself. All had Ford 2.3s in them, most with carbs and TFI, but a couple had single point FI. Since that's an EEC 4 system, however crude they dumb it down to, it's worth remembering how that system works with the double relays. Once you got the check engine light to bulb check, I knew you had it. IMO, w/o good diagrams, you did it the only way possible. I think the problem is that too many fingers have been in it before, and I'm sure if you took the time to pull the harness apart, you'd find another broken splice.. Your way works just as well!
Once it started I thought you would have moved it to get better access while you could. Never the less you amaze me how you stick to it and figure it out. Great job. If I see you I will by you a shot of Vodka :) Geni should mail you a wire diagram for your effort !!!
Wow ivan that machine is wild boy and very tricky to repair but you did it man that thing kicks your butt everytime but you always show it who the boss is good stuff buddy.
Ivan , you can call this the MMS episode(miserable machinery saturday) By the end, you are a certified "Genie us" nice fix..sorry about the missed mountain biking.😎
Genie: A magic spirit that can take human form and serve the person who calls it at a moment's notice. Sorry Ivan, but it looks like you're the Genie and the Big Blue Machine is the Master.
Oh god that job sucks, been watching this slowly the past couple days and hopefully you're getting well compensated for your Saturdays aggravation. My god
gotta love genie lifts. first make sure the diagram is for the serial number range. second check service bulletins. on the ford powered units they had intermittent crank no start or complete crank no start. however the dual fuel units would start and run all day on propane. they had the same basic symptom you had . there was no power coming out of the ecm for the two relays. the fix was a new ecm with a new harness on the engine and half a dozen wires on the chassis moved around. and then there was a completely updated wiring diagram . sadly there was no stickers to show they were updated. so if you got one nothing would match for wiring colors or location
Generally enjoy the vids, but wouldn't mind a brief wrap up at the end, because I don't always catch everything. Just like a 5 second recap on problem and solution. Cheers.
Great one, not that I could have fixed this but I admire your patience, I would have been cursing and throwing things after so long - I felt some of your pain and frustration.
