Just to clarify, for any video I post here that used to be a Patreon exclusive or is a slightly re-edited Patreon video, there will be a pinned comment in the comments section to make that clear. If there isn't then it's all original (like this Genji 2 video).

Y'know, I've recently gotten into PS3 emulation, mainly because I always wanted a PS3 and never had one, I've had a lot of fun emulating and playing Metal Gear Solid 4 and Demon's Souls for the first time, and it's cool how you can enhance these games with higher framerates and resolutions. I have played Genji 1 on the PS2 years ago, but never touched Genji 2, and apparentely there is a 60 FPS mod for Genji 2, so maybe I'll try that and see if there's any value in that six axis dodge. As for the "holding the controller backwards" technique, I'll leave that for Armored Core.
@felman87
@felman87 Год назад
I wonder why the devs made the camera so close and angled as such. Was it to have less things on screen to help the frame-rate? Or was it because this was a launch title and they wanted to show off the pretty graphics, which is easier to appreciate close up. It's such a shame because they had some good stuff in the first game, so why did they change it for the sequel?

Since you're reviewing Game Republic hack and slashes at the moment, I would like to hear your thoughts on Knight's Contract. This game also has it's problems but due to the interesting scenario, that is surprisingly rare, I wish that someone would do a remake of it with better visuals and more responsive gameplay. It has a certain atmosphere, the characters are interesting and the core idea,...as a fan of Ico,...should have a chance to be done right, I think... You may come to that anyway, since Folklore is the next announced game, but Knight's Contract is such an inconspicuous title, Game Republic didn't actually advertise it that much, if at all.

Bar a few standout exceptions, I dont think we'll see games that hit solid performance targets until we're in the PS4 Pro era. Despite that, there were some standout bangers for sure. I did attempt this game since the last Genji video, and I dropped it before the end of the first level. It's just so sluggish. I wanted to give it the benefit of the doubt that maybe it got better later, but I guess not. There is at least a patch to run the game at 60fps on emulator though, but I assume you would need a pretty powerful PC for it to maintain that in those large battle sequences. Also I think this sequel kind of looks worse than the original. It might be technically more detailed, but the first game was more impressive because it did much more with the PS2 than what the sequel did with the PS3. Although all those corridors don't do it any favours either.

I feel like both the first Genji and the first two Onimusha games also to some extent tapped into the solitary experience and journeying alone. despite being in very condensed and linnear worlds due to hardware limitations. Sure Samanosuke had Kaede as a companion. Jubei had multiple friends and Yoshitsune has benkei. But to me at least, those games had a very solitary feeling despite of that. Maybe because of how the story is presented, idk. Onimusha 3 and 4 however (which I still like) went overboard with this entire "go team!" saturday morning cartoon vibes:P Games like Sekiro feels like going back to form or back the the roots, but in a very different presentation.

They say that the first wave of games for a new console generation set the tone of what's to come for that generation. Man, did the 7th generation set the tone for the type of sluggish and compromised games we'd get. As someone that grew up with late gen 5, gen 6 and gen 7th I rarely if ever find myself revisiting gen 7 games outside of a few hand full of which most are from the Wii and the others are either pc ports or re-releases for newer consoles.

Talk about losing touch of whats important . For what the first game was, the second was incredibly misguided. They didnt have to go for such radical changes, just make something like the first, just a little longer. Genji 2 was the start of Game republic's "quantity over quality" mindset. A lot of features that do very little.The Characters and weaponry in Genji 2, Folklore has it too, but it maquarades it well with the Pokemon gimmic, but it does show when they re use the formula for Clash of the Titans. They do move away from it in Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom, making one of their best games, and then Knights Contract, which is too painfull to talk about :p Despite all that, Genji 2 did get me in the feels near the end. Pulled some dirty tricks to make me all emotional. I'll give it that XD

Man, i wish there was remake of Genji 1. Yeah, the first game might have been a decent hack and slash, but i do believe that if the remake had the graphics of Genji 2, the combat of 1 with fixes and new elements, and more open levels to explore, i think it would have been a good game. Since Game Republic has gone bankrupt 11 years ago, i doubt there is any interest in reviving or remake for these type of games.

i didnt playneither game but the patterns are obvious with new gen: more graphics less mechanics..more resolution less artstyle..more quicktime events less complexity..more cutscenes less budget on gameplay......i feel like graphics should have peaked in the late 200s around 2005/2010 it looked good enough to immerse you while keeping a lil bit for you imagination to fill...that would have balanced out the effort and computing power towards more mechanical aspects of the game..for exam^le max payne 2 had interactive object that made its setting feel more immersive than a lot of modern high resolution map whee everything is justa frozen innanimate background but ofc companies found out that making a bunch of cutscenes is easier than making a game...indie games are the savior... i just wish more indie games in the western market took themselves a bit more seriously like japanese games and didnt go for ''im a goofy indie game look heuheu'' because the japanese gaming industry have fallen off a bit with the decrese of the popularity of the playstation and nintendo

And spoilers nearly every PS3 launch title had a low score except for the 1st resistance game....... That was a horrible time for the PS3 lol. As for this game it's just very forgettable a complete disgrace to the original game and lastly it ended up becoming 1 of 2 game Republic made before I believe closing down. This is one of the biggest disappointments I've ever fucking played. Genji 1 had so much potential for growth and improvement, I could only ever see things going up from there. I honestly wasn't expecting to get an inferior product on much stronger hardware, but I guess that's what happens when Sony demands a glorified tech-demo and only allows less than a year of development. I knew this was the Giant Enemy Crab game before I ever started it, but after playing the first game, I remember being excited to play its sequel and see how Game Republic would expand on the original, only to be met with a choppy, zoomed-in, unergonomic mess of a game with a much worse Kamui system. They literally broke systems that worked perfectly before, and any good ideas introduced fall short of their potential. Add some frustrating level gimmicks that do nothing but waste the player's time, and you have the first and only game to ever get my adult self angry enough to throw the game case at the wall.
