The gruesome 1962 murder of blues legend Scrapper Blackwell is revealed by author Rick Kennedy, who visits the Indianapolis neighborhood where the crime unfolded. Along with Charley Patton, Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Hoagy Carmichael and other blues and jazz icons, Blackwell is highlighted in Rick’s book on Indiana’s fabled Gennett Records label. For a more general overview of the book, watch here: • Jelly Roll, Bix, and H...

Not sure why you first mention the shotgun blasts. Later on you are correct, it was a small caliber 22. Scrapper was unreal, ahead of his time for sure. His death certificate is available in public records. So sad. Thank you for this fitting tribute.

in very loving memory of Mr. Francis Hillman Blackwell (1903 - 1962 R.I.P. // gone but NOT forgotten).

I know I should be grateful for all the stories people put on here about my Uncle Scrapper, but it just makes me sad and it hurts to see that still to this day his murder is an unsolved cold case.

Well, I am neither young nor new to guitar playing. But, I’ve got to say, I just discovered Mr. Blackwell‘s music yesterday and it hit me like a thunderbolt. The man was absolutely incredible on that guitar. Absolutely inspiring. His rendition of nobody knows you when you’re down and out is clearly Eric Clapton’s inspiration and the basis for his cover of the song. Both of them got me over here with this guitar learning it. Great song. I honestly think Scrapper did the best job on it though.

Anton: I have been a fan of Scrapper Blackwell since mid-1960s, when I got Prestige Bluesville 1047, wearing out 2 copies of that vinyl LP playing it for people. I then collected much of his other recordings. Too bad he was murdered. Though "rediscovered," he never got to be part of the main concert circuits.

Did he have two shotgun wounds or was he shot with a .22?

I once herd from David Morgan, a local guitarist who played with Yank Rachel for three decades, that Yank was one of the last people to see Scrapper alive; they were going to do an album in the next couple days.

I grew up in Richmond. Spent many summers days kicking around the old Starr/Gennett complex.

Jelly Roll Bix and Hoagie was a cool book. When I was a teenager it turned me on to what became my obsession for a time - the blues of the 20's (my friends in the Oi and punk scene did not know what to make of these foreign sounding songs w/such crude sound quality)

Sadly, you hear from time to time about some two-man drinking party ending up with one man dead and the other facing charges, sometimes not even remembering what happened .....

Judging by the view count I'm one in 966 people who actually know of Scrapper... Anywhere with Bob Dylan is a good place to be (Edited to add) Search for the Lomax family... Long before cars and recoring equipment were cheap and readily available the Lomax family were travelling and collecting music.

Jeez, don't be so impressed with yourself, lol. There's ten billion videos on RU-vid, and not everyone comments. Wow, man, you know of Scrapper Blackwell? Wow! (so do I, that's why I clicked on it). Part 2: "Anywhere with Bob Dylan is a good place to be". Guess you haven't seen him much in the last forty years! Part 3: "The Land Where Blues Began", essential reading (lomax) (alan)

@@TTM9691 Beginning with "don't be so impressed with yourself" and then laying out a self indulgent demonstration of your assumptions isn't always a good idea. What has view count got to do with comments? Whether people comment or not, the lack of views dictates the level of interest. Your opinion is important to you, good for you, why wouldn't my opinion be important to me? Who are you to judge anyone but yourself? Did my comment somehow take your (at the time) unaired opinion away form you? Did it take anything away from anyone? Why would you feel so grand that you should take anything from anyone else? Sometimes it's best to live and let live. And when things don't connect with you just pass them by because in reality they shouldn't have any impact on you, well not so much that you feel the need to correct something (like taste) that has no set boundaries of right and wrong.

You lost me at the shoes. The fedora and rain coat call for trousers and wingtips. No respecting private eye would wear a pair of brown Merrill loafers.
