Dear TimeGhost Community, The last few days have come as a shock to all of us on the team. As we continue to edit and write regular videos, it has been harrowing to cover war exactly 79 years ago in the same cities currently under siege. This has been a grim and painful reminder of why we began this project, why all of us signed up to work here. We want to reach as many people as possible with historiography which is factual, informative, and engaging, so that people around the world can learn from humanity's mistakes and successes of the past. We also strive to show history exactly as it happened, free from lies and distortions for political exploit. Those ideals are now under an existential threat. While both peace and historical truth have been evasive since the end of the Second World War, this moment presents a heightened attack on these issues. All of us here are more determined than ever to do our part as historians, as videographers, as human beings, to protect peace. Not to cover what is happening right now, as world leaders evoke history, as the cities we cover in weekly episodes are once again strangled by violence, would not be politically neutral, it would be a decision to ignore our values. That is why we are launching a campaign to cover Ukrainian history. We hope that as millions of people around the world begin searching the internet to make sense of this all, they will see objective and factual historiography, not propaganda. Right now, groups around the world are manipulating history for political ends. These lies are fuelling war and deaths each passing day. That is why we are taking on extra work, making videos on Ukrainian history, and asking all of you to join us in making a difference. First and foremost, support those who deliver humanitarian aid: www.icrc.org/en/donate/ukraine Join the TimeGhost Army or raise your tier so that we can create factual, professional, and engaging videos about the real history of Ukraine: bit.ly/UKR_TGA

That being said though, while history is cyclical, there are changes too. I mean, we wish this invasion never happened. We wish Russia wasn’t so expansionist. But something tells me that enraged Ukrainian citizens from 80 yrs ago wouldn’t have so easily gotten away with approaching German-Axis (as opposed to Russian) soldiers and shouting at them, let alone threaten them with having sunflowers to grow over their unmarked graves. No, the civilians would have been fighting and resisting in different ways, that are righteous but way less internet-viral.

As a Canadian from the western (Prairie) areas this invasion has been heart-wrenching to watch. I'm enough of a history buff to know that when farmers from Ontario started moving west to the prairies to start farming they were literally starving to death. The federal government was wise enough to recruit large numbers of Ukranians (and, I believe, Poles also) to emigrate to the area and teach people how to farm the plains. They saved the lives and livelihoods of many Canadians and we are grateful to them!
@twalk263
@twalk263 Год назад
@@guywerry6614 the ironic part of the Canadian Govt incentivizing Ukrainians to come settle western Canada was that during WWl they were deemed “Enemies of the State” because they came from the Austrian-Hungarian empire. We as Canadians learn about the Japanese internment camps during WWll but we learned nothing of the original internment l/work camps that were created for the Ukrainians that immigrated here to Canada. A lot of our national parks and railway system were developed from those who had been interred and and for those who were left behind to try and run their farms had their land and belongings confiscated with no reimbursement. It is hard to think that my great grandparents had to carry ID cards at all times with the title Enemy of the State and were forced to report weekly with local RCMP or otherwise be arrested when they played an instrumental role of settling and developing our Western provinces. They faced such racism and were looked upon positively as Ukrainians are today. On top of that a mere 20-24yrs later, many of the Ukrainian families that were affected by the internment policies still had family members enlist and go fight in Europe during WWll for the Allied forces including my own family members. The quiet strength , strong work ethic, commitment to family and unbending will and commitment to the unification of nation is what has brought them through terrible atrocities and we must all stand behind Ukraine and lend our strength and power to never allow their voices to be silenced again.

How accurate is it to call the current Ukrainian government democratic? I have heard some right wing pundits (like Tucker Carlson) denay that Ukraine is a democracy since president Zelensky has imprisoned opposition members and journalists, while this does not justify the Russians invasion, how accurate is this claim? That term I think is used exclusively for elements in the Ukranian military such as the Azov battalion founded originally as an ultra right-wing, white supremacist militia that became a formal part of the Ukranian military. Their members actually do wear swastikas and are why the US and UK have had to stop neonazis from their own population traveling to Ukraine to seek free weapons training. Units such as those were officially labeled by the US government as terrorist organizations so there is some legitimacy to those claims. There are well documented accounts of them slaughtering minorities and committing war crimes. Why Zelensky would allow such people to operate under his command is beyond me.

In college, I studied Medieval history. Due to this, I ended up looking into Kyiv the Golden, the Rurikid dynasty, and the Grand Princes of the many states of what is now Ukraine. These lands were prosperous and dealing with international trade when Moskovya was still a forest. Perhaps Russia sees Ukraine as a necessary part of their country, dating back to the time when the Romanovs changed their names to seem more like the people of Tsarograd, but the Ukrainians know different -- their culture is older and different from Russia. My ancestors fled from the repression and famine that ravaged my country at the hands of imperialists in 1892. I have family who left in 1917 and escaped from the neverending horrors of war. I have family that escaped from my motherland before it was raped by the genocidal Nazi and Soviet regimes in 1939. My family lost contact with relatives who we sadly discovered in 1993 didn't survive the holocaust. Now the very same psychotic fantasies threaten to bring the horrors of war to my motherland and strip it of it's freedom once again. My grandmother's family on my mom's side came to the US after the failed 1905 Russian revolution from Lviv, and my grandfather's family came to the US at the same time from Odessa. I have always wanted to visit my ancestors homeland, the other two great grandparents came from Biolystock and somewhere in the Austro-Hungarian empire all about 117 years ago. My dads parents were American communists in their youth (the 30s - 50s), even though his dad and twin brother both served in WWII (my great uncle survived Bataan, so he didn't like to talk about the war much). I have a picture of my 13 year old grandmother with her family on the boat to visit family in Lviv in 1933, it's a great picture. Being that my whole family is Jewish, much of my family who stayed in Europe died in WWII in horrible ways. I hope to visit all these places someday. Not anytime soon, unfortunately.

I have initally left this comment under the topic-related post on WW2 channel, but I've decided to also post this here, i hope moderators wont mind. This is related to the invasion, not to Holodomor hi. I am Russian and half-Ukrainian, but also am an ardent viewer of the Timeghost content. I rarely comment and try to be apolitical even though I've watched all of your playlists. still, I've decided to speak out and let the Timeghost audience know about what's going on. The events of the last week have been soul-crushing to me. Nothing i can say to my Ukrainian friends at this point, that won't sound hollow, but from the depth of my soul - I am, me personally, I am sorry. I will try what i can to make this right. Now, let's get to the facts. I am going to give you immediate context from the point of view of a Russian citizen. 1) invasion came as a shock to us, almost as much as everyone else. For months our government has been lying to us, that it was just exercising, that soldiers will come home as soon as the exercise is over, that there will be no war, that the west is just warmongering. They lied to us and they lied to the world and no we will pay the price for our trust in a murderous tyrant that usurped absolute power in my country. 2) whatever legitimate or illegitimate historic grievances Russia and Ukraine may have had, they could've been solved diplomatically. Putin didn't even try to give peace a chance, he ignored all calls and requests from Zelensky, trying to shift responsibilities onto him, and force him to talk with "the rebels", who are effectively are just his puppet states. 3) I am not going to give you this tripe now about how this is just Putin's war - no, some people here wanted it also. It's impossible to gauge how many without hard data, but, sticking to the facts here, I can estimate that an absolute minority of people wanted war. The war was immediately condemned as an atrocity by the Academic community, the cultural creators, businesses, the Russian Orthodox Church is just a small number of organizations, who started signing open letters condemning the war. It was also condemned by the regular people who started petitioning the government and going to protests. I doubt anyone outside of a small number of people who still support Putin (which fell below 30% last year according to even falsified government statistics) support this war. And even those who are supporting it will stop once the reality of what happened will really sink in. 4) looking at the situation through the prism of democratic procedures, this is a result of a slow decline of already flawed democracy, that Russia has haphazardly developed in the 90s. Since the constitutional crisis of 1993, the president in Russia (so not Putin necessarily) can hold almost an absolute power, as he has the final say in legislation. After Putin came to power on January 1st, 2000 he has gradually dismantled what little democratic freedoms we have, including governor elections in most regions. He can now do whatever he wants with only a very limited pushback from perhaps Central Bank, it's the only institution he didn't bother to take over. There was a societal consensus in Russia, that since Putin was a man credited with Russia's resurgence in the 2000s, we can just "wait him out", I guess. This was mostly based on the assumption that he is a rational man, guided by reason, an assumption that is no longer valid. We will now pay the price for our apathy. 5) I am not going to talk about this war, as it's still unfolding but I can already say that Russia has lost. It doesn't matter if Putin turns the entirety of Ukraine into ash, I know a national uprising when I see it. If the goal was to crush it into submission - they failed and if the goal was to ensure their neutral status, there were other ways to achieve this. Putin managed to do in one week what Ukraine probably couldn't have solved by itself by the end of this century - he finally united its population, against a common enemy. When I see Ukrainians stopping tanks just by standing in front of them, I understand that their spirit cannot be broken. And as for us? Well, we have work to do here in Russia, an endless amount of work. Putin needs to go, but I can't even begin to think how will we get him out of Kremlin, considering how controlled and disorganized our opposition is. And then the entirety of the Russian political system needs to be reworked to be more fair and inclusive, we need to break the cycle so something like this would never occur again. 6) Once again, I am sorry. I hope we can make it right in the future.

I read stories about cannibalism and famine as part of a history class and it never ceased to amaze me how most of the pictures and many of the stories were all of the Holodomr specifically. It was so bad they even provide many of the pictures and much of the Wikipedia page on cannibalism. This and the Great Leap Forward are 2 reasons that can on their own prove why communism simply doesn't work. Mao and Stalin caused some of the worst famines in human history and the worst cases of cannibalism of the last millenia if not human history, directly and indirectly. Between the 2 of them they either directly or indirectly caused the deaths of hundreds of millions and supported the worst dictatorships in human history. Mao helped bring about the Kim dynasty and the Khmer Rouge while Stalin propped up most of the rest of the dictators of the 20th century. They both instituted policies they knew were terrible and they knew would fail but pushed them forward regardless for the sake of polticial ideology and so they could scapegoat the inevitable problems on their polticial enemies and clear house. It wasn't even accidents or an unforeseen consequence, they knew about many of the problems well ahead of time but did it regardless.

The Holodomor was one of the greatest tragedies in human history, and I applaud your team very much for your thorough coverage of this tragic series of events. So many people know nothing about it, and in this regard you do a timeless service to the world by raising awareness on this topic. Regarding the introduction, it's tragic that there is a recent continuation/revival of conflict between Russia and Ukraine, with Ukraine being caught in the middle of the conflict between the USA and Russia (this being a deep-seeded one in its own right, although not as intimate or soul-crushing as the Holodomor). But this current conflict could NEVER be so simplified as to refer to it as 'unprovoked' (which is, at best, a buzzword). The United States has been pushing and pushing and pushing Russia for years, to the extent where they basically guaranteed this would happen eventually, after repeated warnings from the Russian Federation (including its many attempts to negotiate). Make no mistake, this is NOT and could NEVER be an indictment on the Ukrainian people or their obvious, self-evident, honorable right to self-defense. This is the first video your channel (or The Great War) has ever done that I thought was not even-handed (or even suspected might lack context), but the introduction was so biased and so unfair and so duplicitous that I cannot continue being a paying subscriber any longer. I may just be one person, but I wanted to make my thoughts known on this. That introduction was an oversimplified abomination that I know (based on years' worth of evidence of excellent content) is so far beneath you that I couldn't believe my eyes and ears watching this just now. Absolutely disgraceful for men and women of your experience and talent.

The invasion of Ukraine is an illegal war, as it is a breach of article 50 of the Nuremberg Protocol's definition of a Crime against Peace. A legal text that Russia is an active party to. The International Criminal Court is now investigating War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity by the Russian armed forces. Ukraine is a sovereign country without any alliance to the United States. Russia invaded and annexed parts of her territory against international laws at two occasions in the last ten years. It doesn't matter if anyone else did similar things. It doesn't matter what Russia (read Putin) feels about anything in the world. It doesn't matter what anyone other than Ukraine is perceived to have done, or has actually done to Russia. Russia has attempted to justify these acts by false flag attacks, engineered narratives of ethnic strife, and rhetoric of hate. These are lies and foul propaganda. Its is therefore an unprovoked attack and our narrative is completely justified, to not mention morally and ethically required. It is against our Code of Conduct to justify criminal activity, especially international crimes related to conflict. Whataboutism is also not permitted - one crime does not justify the other. Because of your long time viewership we will give you a chance to rectify your mistake by retracting your post. As I sit here in America, I ask myself, what can we do? I am 70 now and have lived through and fought in war, I know history, and think back to September 1939, and to 1940 and France. I also think of policies of appeasement prior to that as Austria was absorbed, (my mother was there to see Hitler's motorcade), of the Rhineland and Czechoslovakia, people cast to the mercy of a fascist power only to prevent a war the other countries did not want. Ultimately the world was forced into a cycle of mass destruction and development of capacities that could destroy all life. How do we stop Putin without destroying the world? I’m very glad that the TimeGhost team will be addressing this conflict from the point of view of unbiased historians rather than journalists as I feel too much sensationalism has tainted much of the truth of this conflict. Iryna Dulka, my thoughts go out to you and your family. My grandparents described living through the Second World War in the north of Germany and watching nations who suffered even worse than they did experience war again fills me with dread, sadness and rage. I hope your family stays safe, I hope this war ends peacefully as soon as possible so as many people as possible can live. Excellent work TimeGhost. I can't wait to see more original content on Ukraine, the history needed to put what's happening now into context. Many people thought that after the Soviet Union fell, things like this would never happen again. Now today the democracies of the world are being undermined and attacked by nations who participate in free trade but are not free. Putin's Russia, Xi Jinping's China, Lukashenko's Belarus, and other heartless authoritarians willing to put profit and power before human life and liberty. My hope is that this war ends peacefully as soon as possible. But in addition to that, I hope that this is a wake up call for democracies everywhere that just because a nation trades with you on the world economy, that doesn't mean that they're free.

@@diegotrejos5780 That's what I hope this situation shows. The world's response to Russian aggression shows that we don't have to stay silent when tyrants act. It's a shame this had to happen before that realisation starts to hit people.

Truth! Here in the US we didn't have to place ourselves in that position, we had the steel belt and we've been a net exporter of grain. We need to be more mindful of what our international trade is subsidizing, such as "blood diamonds," or child labor. We shouldn't have turned a blind eye to human rights violations.

How many of are descendants of these people in that part of the world? We all wondered why they left and came to America. Now we know why the communist party was committed all kinds of murder to their own people. Remember these facts when you take your DNA ancestor results. I know my father's mother's family was from Russia and that part of the world. Now I understand why they immigrated it was either stay and then die basically. Thank you TimeGhost for making these videos.
