Honestly as a black person idc what race a character is if i like their personality and playstyle thats all i care about....the only thing that bothers me is why do the darker skin tone characters in genshin either have trash kits or very mediocre? Besides maybe kaeya?
Now she knows how us "endgame wanters" have been feeling for the past 3.5 years. It sucks being in the minority, doesn't it? The things you want aren't the things that the majority want, otherwise Hoyo would literally do those things. Taking inspiration from a culture and applying it to a fantasy world doesn't mean you have to literally replicate real life. Skin color not being dark enough for your taste has *nothing* to do with ethics LOL
I always never get peoples obsession with race representation in games, like yeah we get it you want to see yourself in a game but that doesn't mean they have to actually look like you.
I mean when a game uses `real world representations` as its main point of references, its gonna get obssessed on quite a bit. This becomes less of a presence if they focus more on innovative elements like: -Instead of `Humans` as the characters in the world, it instead is creatures or Robots, (refer to Biomutant for a example on the later and Spiral knights for the latter), this more focus towards a much more fictional design will lead to significantly `less` importance on race representations. -They purposely use `real world representations` to use familarity to cling people more to it, but then use the excuse of fictional design todo whatever they want, even when basic freaking scientific knowledge would imply: Cold environments would result in people getting paler skin due to lack of heat to `scorch` the skin and Hot environments would result in darker skin as a result. -Sadly the lack of innovative design gets less and less done, since some anime/manga materials get REALLY creative, such as having NO humanoids and have the cast be just talking animals more or characters that are made out of JEWELs that completely take out any particular racial niches and what not. Which would of been fantastic ways to get away with such `racist problems` (mostly), yet for a mobile game, they are always gonna stick to clinging whatever can attract more people period. Anyway its just a massive headache for a mostly redundant element, and probably doesnt help Gen`stingie is VERY lazy on its model designs, because they already re`use the same character base models so much, it should technically be too easy for them to make `darker skin characters`, but they always are gonna focus on the target audience more then diversity. Cause if they go full in on the dark skin characters then they could easily get called some DEI group but at the same time not going all in is gonna cause them to get complained at anyway. Also probably doesnt help that some of these `racist call outers` when they give some examples, they are conviently doing trace/paintovers of existing characters, especially the MAIN CHARACTER of all things, but they do such particular weird things like overly specific hairdesigns, teeth shapes, facial structures that a good deal of them come off as `uncanny valley` stereotypes or something... Which would of been better if maybe instead of lazily recoloring things and make it look INSANELY out of place, they instead created original art pieces while keeping to the particular design tone of that series to make it organically look GOOD in said world to help push thar desire of such character diversity needing to be present also... Which doesnt help in certain story specific situations that use specific history as its reference, would normally mean certain groups of people would NOT be present in that locale or even THAT kind of time`line, (seriously why do you think people got annoyed with Hip hop music being present in a game suppose to be set in the Feudal Era `ish time of Japan when Ubisoft pulled that crap off for its trailer, in addition to a playable character in full body armor, walking around in a town and cutting down japanese citizens that not only were unarmored but severely under`armed when the fully armored individual pulls out a freakin spiked club and not in a comedically satire way at all?). Which considering we already got a hot-hole with Assassin`s creed shadows doing a FK-TON of controversy, means it would also be a dangerous time if Mihoyo leans more into that and get harassed and linked up to those same controversies if they do anything too different that links too far into pandering DEI style. Anyway, Sumeru and Nathlan especially would of been the proper time to have `darker skinned individuals due to the kind of climate that would lead to such appearances, but the fact they conviently have a bunch of dark skin characters released during Sumeru that also happen to have massively bad dog-shite kits didnt help the case of the `representation argument.` And they are basically doing it again with a `Dark skinned Leopard looking lady`, happening to be a Geo unit, who also happen to have the same `overall design` as a certain sumeru unit who got added to the standard banner list that is likely to cause massive shenigans overall, since if the character is OP, its likely to replace a certain one of two particular Fontaine specific units, because it cant be more OP then ZongDong and with its appearance it cant just be another support type unit or thats gonna lead to other particular controversy fun. Didnt help they have what looks to be a 4 star geo unit as part of the debut crew that is probably just gonna be a Kiara for Geo with how the character seems to be all about running around or something. Anyway boredom ramble done, back to other fun stuff now that the brainrot`s been cleaned up a lump.
Are people surprised by this? It's well known that China sees dark skin as ugly. This is why china placed a mask on black panther face in the Poster. It's why China removed the black guy in the star wars poster. It's why for black panther 2 they remove all the black people in the poster. Mihoyo wants to sell pretty characters to Chinese players the most. Chinese players are less likely to pull for a dark skin character. Thus, mihoyo will not make an all dark skin cast even if it contradicts the region that they are trying to pay homage to.
Since I'm mostly in tiktok let me quote what their takes in there (I'll only mention the one that has Chinese related comments, so I'm sorry if your comments got mentioned): "Cn fanbase said that the natlan cast got "Korean-washed" HELP" "why are people acting like the CN players are different than normal players??" (This one mentioned you tbh) " "EVEN CN PLAYERS COMPLAINING TOO⁉️" dawg they've been complaining since Sumeru 😭 just because they CN doesn't mean they stand with Hoyo" "Cn players r even complaining l, theyve been complaining since sumeru too😭" "You do know that the Chinese player base is also complaining a lot on Twitter and literally bashing them..." So yeah... But the black panther one is true tho...
What I want is for them to leave certain cultures and gods alone if they aren’t going to represent them respectfully. Make your own culture and gods if you can’t even respect the people you base your game on.
THANK YOU. if they dont want to have darker skin tones thats fine but why are you choosing these places to take inspiration from? couldve easily had a norse region (norse mythology is HUGE in genshin) or even korean, vietnamese etc. they actively chose to base natlan on the ring of fire then go out of their way to not do it fully while doing it faithfully for every other region, which makes it look worse in context. hell they couldve made one up for the game and it wouldve still made sense. it isnt that they were forced to make sumeru/ natlan and made it lighter, they actually chose those inspirations to go off of, then stopped halfway, which is why people are bothered about it imo.
EXACTLY! they could've name Ororun anything else and I wouldn't mind but they cherry pick only what they think is cool about the culture and that's disrespectful as fuck.
Sorry but you do not have a Monopoly on Mythology and Culture. People are free to come in and take Inspiration and include your culture and mythology inton their creative works. Its their creative Process. You dont have a right to start saying they cant do this or that
@@arnowisp6244 I understand that mythology and culture are universal sources of inspiration, and I'm not claiming ownership over them. However, when a company chooses to draw from specific cultures, especially ones that have been historically marginalized or misrepresented, there's a responsibility to approach them with respect and accuracy. It's not just about creative freedom; it's about recognizing and honoring the significance and origins of these cultures and their deities. Creating a region inspired by South America but failing to represent its diversity accurately, while using names of deities from that region, can be seen as a form of cultural appropriation rather than respectful homage. If the company can't commit to this respect, they should consider creating entirely original cultures and mythologies instead. Have a good day.
@@arnowisp6244 Don't lie to yourself, it's only ok because it doesn't affect you, it would be every bit as terrible if it was done to you or someone close to you.
Got to remember most Chinese are racist towards black and brown ppl. But if genshin was to make more brown characters, they would sell, in my opinion. Dehya sold for a ez 12 mill.
Deyha could've sold far more if her kit wasn't garbage. Also her BiS weapon is far more valuable than her so I dunno how many pulled for her than her weapon but Surely it's a 1:1 or greater.
Dehya sucked ass, and was sentenced to the standard banner. maybe if they put effort into brown or black characters they would make good money. Isn't that what we're arguing here?
Objectively wrong. Genshin's majority of the revenue comes from China. That's why they only listen to Chinese players, and will design characters based on their liking.
True like why would i want to feel represented by a Chinese gacha game ???? In a fantasy world I play game to reduce stress and get of the real world for a bit...
I didn’t even think about it till this debacle and how the lady in the record store in ZZZ is the most stereotypical of a person of melanin 😅 Kinda like Nora from warframe now that I think about it
I hate when people insert their un critical opinions like dude the reason people are upset is because genshin can take inspiration from whatever culture across the planet but not have single dark skinned charater that is part of that culture it's mad weird
@@Jade10_gem honestly because they have white knight syndrome and want to save those poor people of color who supposedly can't stand for themselves. It's sad mate very sad
Saying there aare a lot of pale arabs as if it's only arab culture that they took inspiration from for Sumeru. Indian culture also exists in the game, I'm pretty sure there are a lot of brown skinned people there yet they are not properly represented. NPCs and enemies don't count.
Bruh I’m romani and hsr was straight up using racist stereotypes against Aventurine, the romani character. I don’t care because I don’t expect hoyoverse to be sensitive towards race and stuff because hoyoverse is Chinese.
@@latitude990 dehya can be easily fixable. Make her skill interrupt resist through out duration. Make mitigation to 75 to 80 . And her burst heals all characters based on amount of hp she lost. If even better is add cr or cd buff based on amount of Max hp during burst. Then she will be like A+ unit.
As an Arab I personally don't see the "issue" in Sumeru , The game is a game to make money and most of they're spenders are in the Chinese community. Most of the Sumeru playable cast are Arab/ Persian, them being lighter is fine tbh even me I'm like a lighter Cyno skin tone and people have to know that there are more white Arabs and slightly tan Arabs than darker it's not really racist, but yes there is an issue with making the tanner character's kits trash such as dehya, candace, cyno but it is a Chinese company after all.
@@elia0162 Yeah, I don't have a problem with the lack of dark skinned characters in Hoyoverse, but whenever they're playable, their kit are all garbage or mid, as if it's on purpose (my dearest Dehya)
That last point I agree with, most if not all I have seen are niche or useless. Most eastern asia is known for not liking darker skin tones as it's linked to classism, so black people to them are just the lowest form of people. For me, the issue is that they're making a nation based off a culture where people are on the more melanin side of color yet they look as they do. It would be better if they sold Natlan as an SEA nation and called it a day, throw fkn Pol Pot in there for all I care
Rather than pointing out skin colors. They have been good on many aspect. Like the cuisine, architecture, culture, landmarks, lifestyles, music, and outfits. Traveling to other region does feel like you are in a trip.
My issue with natlan aside from the mid looking characters (why is the archon looking like a biker gang leader..) i was expecting a darker turn to the story from the start. A nation of war. Lore wise this is the land of dragons. I was hoping we could see some beefy dragon folk. So far im getting some wholesome family friendly vibes from the nation of war...
"nation of war", war being the beach children getting together to aggressively throw rubber duckies at each other while colourful lava flows on a distant mountain
I mean we can discuss/rant all we want on the lack of great brown/dark-skinned characters in Genshin but the lion's share of Genshin's revenue comes from China and they don't give a f*ck or are against blacks in particular.
Arknights is also a Chinese gatcha and it has black, tanned and dark skiined characters. Reverse 1999 also has Indian characters that are dark skinned like real life Indians. so to answer your statement, yes, yes can do those demographics if they want to, they're just whitewashing racists in Genshin, and people have no right to attack peopel for getting angry at their culture being erased
@@connorradcliffe1769 if you would do research you'd see that the countries sumeru is based on have a majority of white skin. As for Natlan it depend on the era and the story we get if it's after the European took over it make sense that we have a majority of white skin, black skin people might be in smaller number and oppressed.
4:05 There's no responsibility of representing entirety of something when you're inspired by it. Inspiration is just taking some ideas. Representation is pretty much faithful portrayal. They contradict each other.
@@VxVFiction bro I am but sad indian civilization doesn't have a representation not indians but india like architecture etc...places like as a nation
What’s funny is my favorite game just added a region that is based off South America. A ton of the residents are white and tons of them aren’t even human looking. They are various other species that coexist with the more humanoid races. Also no one in the community has complained at all
BTW a lot of Asian beauty standards have being pale as one of the standards and it has nothing to do with race. It is more so classism. Back in the day if you were rich or a noble you were able to stay inside more so you became paler. While as if you were broke you would be outside working the fields. So essentially if you were darker skin you were a peasant while as if you had pale skin you were rich. So being pale was seen as elegant while being tan was considered dirty and poor.
Not just asia it was in America as well back then lighter skin color ppl were considered very intelligent while darker were considered uneducated and I heard that this is common in India and South Korea as well
@@devilkazumi578correction this is considered a sign of beauty basically everywhere. Probably due to similar lines of thinking. Even in black American culture “lightskins” are considered beautiful
Southeast Asian here. This is gonna come out as mean to people like her, but GIRL,WHO CARES. Like, I'm sorry, but all this "representation" thing sounds too cheesy and desperate and INSECURE for me. Why? Why would anyone care to be represented? So what?? Do you think your race's worth is so small that it needs to be "represented" from video games - from _anything??_ YOU DON'T NEED TO BE REPRESENTED. YOU ARE FINE. JUST BE PROUD OF WHO YOU ARE. WHO CARES WHAT OTHERS THINK. Personally, I couldn't care less about skin colors in fiction HOWEVER, I love to see varieties and what _makes sense_ in fiction. Yeah, I would've loved to see tanned, big ol' muscular warriors in Natlan. That's why I was underwhelmed when I only saw women and kids (nothing wrong w/ them btw). People who live in hot places tend to be more tanned while people who live in cooler places tend to be paler (mostly, not all). I think that should be applied to any form of fiction. Genshin kinda lacked that in their story. For me, I would've assumed it was just poor writing/world building. But why bring up race? Why should you insert people or places irl to fiction? Why should YOU insert YOURSELF in a made-up world? IT DOES NOT MATTER. Also, it kinda sounds hypocritical when they bring up race but they don't bring up age. Do they sell old people as their characters? Yeah they're whatever hundreds of years old. But do they sell old people as characters? Or what about hot women with biological - not adopted - kids? Bruh their characters aren't even in _any_ romantic relationships. People forget that gacha games, especially Hoyo games, are just simply selling characters that people are gonna get attached to. Whatever there is or not in their own video games, it doesn't matter. (Tho I really wanted a big middle-aged dude wielding a big ass sword/spear - tanned, with battle scars all over his body. Not in that game, it seems. T^T)
I dunno, i have to agree with the outcry here. People get upset at having black actors when it comes to historical fiction that takes place in europe so people have a right to be upset that the characters are white for an africa and mexico inspired region. It's weird and insulting to have everything else inspired by indigenous tribes but not have the actual people be a part of that. It feels racist, like "oh well i like everything else about your culture except your people!" > "chinese people are racist so they dont want dark skin in media" This is false. Yes, colorism is an issue in china with toxic beauty standards, but most chinese people are not as racist as we are stereotyped to be. They certainly dont care about the skin color of a fictional game. Also, on cn and jp forums they are also upset right now, and i remember specifically one person saying its hypocritical to call representation politically correct when chinese people are extremely outraged when they are not given proper representation by the west. Also, stereotyping chinese people to be racist is racist itself. Also, I'm a chinese-american if it makes any difference.
Yappers in the West, realizing HYV makes games for Chinese Market first, JP second and Global third. Just took you , idk, 4 years? Lmao, they consider HYV racist, but still play the game and waste money on pixels. Smart move
She really needs to distinguish between racism and colorism more. It's not "white supremacy" to favor light skinned characters. In cultures where lighter skin fits the beauty standards it's not about race but skin tone. A Korean who wants light skin does not want Caucasian skin. They want light Korean skin. This is like saying white people who tan want to be black. No they want to be a tan white person lol. When China favors light skin tones it's not favoring white people. Not everything revolves around white people
think the worst example is the dog guy next to capitano in the trailer, pretty sure he's based off a black African deity which to not do a literally deity that has believers justice is pretty bad. pretty sure smite did their own representation of the deity and looks significantly different to the genshin version.
personally i dont care what color a char in a fictional video game is sure if its suppose to be a historical game criticize it but when a game simply is inspired by a region in the world that could simply mean the music or building design it rarely if ever means anything for char design. about her saying " why make a fantasy game with no black p[eople" correct me if im wrong but lotr a western made movie and game franchise also had no dark skinned people. in fact im pretty sure most fantasy universes have little to no dark skinned people including western made ones.
13:00 100% wrong. Dark skin character do and HAVE sold well in Chinese AND other Asian markets. R1999 has black characters that sold well and its a Chinese company. In Blue archive Karin, a dark skin black character, was so popular in her bunny suit variant she (and Asuna) literally saved the game and shot their popularity to the stratosphere. This is an exclusively on hoyo
Idk, the monthly revenue of all 3 of them is like 50 times less than genshin's so...Also ironically r1999 does pretty poorly on global compared to china despite having tons of representation
@@eeeeepy If you want higher revenue, look at Nikke, they occasionally reach hoyo levels. Also in their recent popularity poll, Noir was top 7 and Naga wasnt far behind
What Netflix and Hollywood are doing is much worse because they take existing characters and change their race just to weaponize it. By doing that, they can deflect all constructive criticism of the show by claiming "fans are just being racist." I don't feel that what Hoyo is doing is a big deal because they create new characters rather than changing the race of already established characters, and they don't try to paint fans as racist.
@@queru2284 yeah if anything those who change the skin color of the character in art as in fixed it according to them Nahh bro you just changed the race of a character because you hate their skin color And they say they're only asking for Representation Representation that happens on the expense on another race is racist and it's sad that they're ignoring that that
Whataboutism does nothing for the conversation. If I'm talking about an anime made me sad I don't need someone to be like "oh but you don't talk about this song that's just as sad" like wtf? How we get here?
Cultures really are a funny thing, because over here it's a beauty standard to be tanned and people use fake tan creams to make their skin appear more brown than it is xD
Gonna say genshin is not a representation of real life history, places and cultures, just draws the inspiration from those so there's not a single reason why any particular design choice has to be in game. I mean it's a fantasy world with fantasy characters, just take them for what they are and enjoy.
Genshin is a fictional world. Adults also don't commonly look like children like 80% of the characters in Genshin. Tits also don't jiggle like they do on Raiden. Imagine not getting represented in a digital world and using things such as racism to weaponize your argument. People want to be a victim of something SOOOOO badly they grasp at WHATEVER they can construe as racism/bigotry etc. ANYTHING.
Hoyoverse are determine to have most of their characters with fair skins. They been doing this since Honkai 3rd and even now in HSR. If they really putting effort of having one, it would be something similar to Fire Emblem Engage made by Nintendo example Timmera and Fogado. Fun fact: Dani Chambers voice actor both Nilou and Timmera.
idk, it might be cuz im scandinavian. but i dont understand this video i think it missed the mark feels like a 30min video that can be summed up in a few lines and ultimately is a nothing burger
I'll just say it. If someone does not agree with a certain choice in a game, they should be the difference, and not by crying to the developer to do something, because most of the time that falls on deaf ears, but by creating something themselves to prove that what they want is right or profitable. People love to complain while sitting on their ass, but don't move a sigle finger to put in some actual effort for their goal. And no, "Art fixing" where you just dumb a bucket on brown paint in photoshop on an already existing character and crying on twitter/reddit about something is not effort. You want to make a difference? Make an original product in the image of what you want and see how well it goes, and we know this actually works because of Helltaker, sadly no one has the actual drive and will to put in the effort like the creator of that game. Again, pleople just love to complain while not doing anything that can actually help their cause.
This is also a good point. I think people assume the mass majority of French people are white for some weird reasons but a lot of French people are super dark
Why people care so much about a freaking character from a Chinese game not being black enough 💀 as a black latino person I find those complains so unnecessary
it is a fictional place inspired by but not implied... created for a fictional made-up world in a chinese gacha game by a chinese company which caters primarily to a local chinese market ... and the chinese won't care about your feelings and opinions or ideologies
you aren't really nailing the problem at all,the problem it is not that they make low amount of darker characters but the fact that all tan characters are absolute garbage across all hoyo games
This is so lame, the person goes to yale & talks down on it only labeling it by race, living the dream but never satisfied, as for representation, they should try games like black desert or any game that lets u make a custom avatar. Its like they’re just complaining for sake of it. Like how r u supposed to have fun when all u care about is “p.o.c” & politics. ”im asian & it offends me” but subscribes to western culture & grew up in the usa.
i hope when there's a new game release they should put a disclaimer telling that this game might offend players, that it is fiction and if players are particular with race, colors or such to keep away from this game.
This was about what I was expecting to see: it's very hard to judge light levels when we don't have any characters we already know present (Capitano really doesn't count given we see him in darkness), but it does seem that everybody but the likely Monstadter has skin at least a shade darker than usual but lighter than the continent-wide definition of "dark". Reasonable interpretation of the early Americas' population seen through this game's lens. The developers also are continuing to demonstrate significant amounts of actual cultural research even when they then choose to not be accurate to a real-life culture. For a Chinese game subject to Chinese censorship, I remain impressed by this artistic commitment. Can understand why some people are upset about it, but so far the attitude of "make what you like and ignore criticism" appears to be producing results of higher quality than seeking broad approval does. Also, so far the cultures being fictionally touched on seem to be appreciating the attempt: being able to pull this off with Japan's Edo period given historical relations has convinced me of the sincerity of the developers. I'll leave it to actual scholars with expertise on the values, living conditions, and mythology being artistically represented here to criticize this.
Well its good that people are protesting against it as genshin has been ignoring player feedback for a long time and nobody will talk about it as they will get hate kudos to you man for speaking up for the cause
If you're obsessed over this topic you might be the one having a race problem. You don't even know the story , the white people might not be the good guys and might basically reflect what happened to the region they took inspiration from.
This "need" for dark skin characters, is THE LAST THING hoyo should think about their game, they need to change WAY MORE OTHER things than think of that crap about skin tone.
@@deadlybeauty53 dude they did ass job on skin tone and they even take inspiration from real places , I completely agree with you But they did fuck up , they name a character as a god of a religion and then fuck his design to make him edgy , this is wrong
I'm black. 🇺🇸 I didn't support the Cleopatra series when they misrepresented Egypt. I'm not gonna support Hoyoverse for white-washing black / brown culture, Arab culture, African culture, etc. either. To everyone who supported the fall of the new Cleopatra series, hopefully you stick to your principles. 🙏 I say this because I know Genshin has quite a lot of psychological control on its playerbase. 😅 But if everyone throws money at Genshin, nothing will change. We'll see who's putting a facade with virtue signaling... versus who actually means what they say and took genuine offense to Hoyo's actions once Natlan comes out and revenue reports come in. I sense drama in the future. 😅
There won't be. Natlan is the Last Region before Sneznaya which is based on Russia. So no. Once they are done with Natlan, They are done with Black Cultures.
LATAM player here, the Spanish community it's quite indifferent towards them, Some are resentful about their way, after what happened with Dehya, So yeah, Spanish people don't hope anything from them, some even pissed off, from the actual drama, because they don't want them anymore Some memes in Spanish points towards they tendency to do weak PoC characters 👀 Take with a grain of sal
If Genshin was just China culture than that would make sense. No one is asking them to add darker skinned characters in Mondstadt, Liyue, and Inazuma. But now suddenly in Sumeru they don't want to stay accurate to the characters they took inspiration from. Mondstadt characters look European, Liyue characters look Chinese, Inazuma characters look Japanese. Snechznaya characters will surely look Russian. Just asking for the same consistency in Sumeru and Natlan. Before you say "They don't have to do that, this game isn't for your representation", it ain't that deep. It's only valid criticism. At this point I don't even expect Hoyoverse to change. They would rather make furries than characters that aren't pale lmao. At least we know have a good tanned character in Nekomiya.
@@Shoujo_oif its not deep then its not valid, while if it is indeed valid then it would be deep. Which one is it? You're contracting yourself. Also, liyue don't have the stereotypical slit eyes while sumeru and natlan has equally fantastical features like colourful hair, horns and tails. No part of the game is stereotypical while all of it is equally fictitious. The “inconsistentcy” you claimed simply don't exist, just admit that it's another one of your first world problems, equally pointless as the likes of pizza toppings.
Natlan is based on Latin America right? And actually...a lot of latinos are pretty white too from what I know. You know surprisingly a lot of places on the Earth are pretty white, which would especially make sense in the North and South America considering the colonization that happened centuries ago. Genshin devs are greedy but I wouldn't say stupid
We only got 10-11 characters to play that are Tan or Brown skin to play with. Which isn't much but at least it's something. Like Sumeru has 4 playable characters that Egyptian descent that are tan while everyone else is middle eastern but pale skinned. So then people hoped and prayed Naltan won't get the same treatment...They got the same treatment lol. Because we only got 5 characters from Natlan that are tan skinned, and since Natlan is basically all the tan and dark skinned countries fused into one country and yet somehow everyone that is playable has a light tan or pale af... Nah that's sus even for me, because you'll make the NPC mid tan or dark Brown but you won't do that for playable ones. I call full bs on that front. However I'm not gonna racewash a character just because I didn't get my tan or brown or dark brown brothers and sisters that's not what we do that just as wrong and I'm seeing it all over twitter/x and tumblr in the art gaming communities don't do that shit you can't have it both ways or the rules for thee but not for me bs it's not cool. Stop it. No. Now if you say to me "Well why don't you make your own game or characters and not complain" I am. I'm doing that. So don't come at me with that I'm not that one you should be having that convo with because I know my target audience and results I want. All I'm saying is I somewhat agree with the ones who's complaining about the cultural and race inaccuracies. However the only difference is that I know not to complain to China about it. That's the one thing I know not to do, I know they're not going to listen to that kind of attitude and have a good opinion about it might make the negative opinion worse. Plus I don't have too agree with you either and you don't have to agree with me that's what diversity of thought is and why it exist. If everyone was the same it'd be boring as hell and nothing gets done with fixing the issue and just makes people hate each other more which is the opposite of what I want in the world. Do I fully give a fuck....nah not really I mean like I said at least we got something when it comes to playables at least we got 10-11. I don't really care for the NPCs because most of the time no one really cares for NPCs unless they make and actually connection with the player. Now what I REALLY want to get fixed is combat. PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD FIX THE DAMN COMBAT😭😭😭! Otherwise I'm not playing anymore I barely play as is now I really want them to fix the combat.
Well considering hoyo is a chinese company and in china and some asian countries the beauty stardard seem to be like more "pearl white skin". And since we know that hoyo seem to listen to its chinese audience more. Well y'know.

I don't really understand whats the issue o.O Prioritize game being good rather than colors o.o Because going in to skin color is like going in to a sinkhole where people would next demand every culture religions to be implemented, temples, signs, symbols etc to be implemented, even dresses to be implemented. Last thing i want is for games to become copy of reality.
you do have to wonder why they even tried to use those regions though. they couldve easily based natlan off of korea or even norse people and still have the same effect. in fact I dont see why they didnt use norse as an inspiration since its a very popular aesthetic and theyve used norse mythology since their first game ever but idk. everyone saying its because theyre cn are ignoring all the other cn games that have darker skin tones as well, like it doesnt have to be black or even as dark as dehya but just having different color tints would make it sm better. the pale white being used for every single cast member is just hurting my eyes at this point, and Im a character designer who mostly designs white characters.
From what i remember back when i play genshin Natlan was latin culture no? As latina myself i could care less the skin color... Once more twitter forgets that theres white ppl (a bunch other skin colors) in latam
personally I just wish there was actual color in the designs. idm lightskinned characters but most of these arent lightskinned theyre pale as paper. having the exact same color tone for germany, japan, china, rainforest, nation of dragons, nation of kneariah, it just looks bad. if they had shifting tones like some be more yellowy, some browner, it would just look sm better even outside the darker ones. Im a character designer too so maybe this bothers me more lol but its just so boring to limit yourself creatively like that idek. xilonen is as pale as I am and my friends have always joked that Im a vampire bc Im really pale and never go outside into the sun.
To be fair hoyo is actually slowy braking the mold of the CCP wen it comes to their products because of how great the are and how well they stand with the CCP. On the note of the race representation, sorry but it's legit just up to the company and seeing how strict CCP is all you can do is wait and see.
I think the most ridiculous thing she brought up has to be the business ethics and social responsibilities thing. It shows just how American she is. First of all, companies only do that stuff for PR or legal reasons, they don't actually care even though Americans seem to think that they do for some reason. Second, companies in other countries will obviously have different rules, so applying this American-centered perspective to a Chinese company doesn't make any sense at all. Honestly, she comes off as the racist here; despite constantly playing up her skin colour and Nepalese birthplace, she is culturally 100% American and wants to force American values on the rest of the world.
You dont even know the story , it might take inspiration from what happened to the region they took inspiration from. Trying to farm the race obsessed people is sad or youre one of them and that would mean you have a race issue and its worse.
@@shard135 I am talking about the portion of a whole. Kaeya, Cyno, Candace, Xinyan, and Deyha have kits ranging from decent to terrible. That is proof of its own and it's not confirmation bias like you say it is.
@@vjbd2757 Kaeya was actually pretty good for a long time but you must not play from the beginning. Cyno is actually a pretty good unit he's not top tier but he's good. Dehya has been played recently in a bunch of teams but you need constellations. Candace is not the worst , hydro just has a lot of competition and very good characters. Xinyan is the only one that's really clunky but I ll give you Dehya if you want.
Then there is people like me whos complain about the hyped tone/theme of 'region of war' is overshadowed by this 'complexion' problem. I just think in disbelief that Hoyo somehow change their direction to approach more family-friendly. And here we are getting a bunch of kids with Pokemon lead by a biker gang.
🤔 I think you're accidentally misconstruing what she meant when she said: CN was pushing "white supremacy". White is a skin color, not a nationality. CN's beauty standard is "the whiter the skin, the better". So, yes, that would translate to "white supremacy". NOT "European supremacy." ... But "white skin supremacy." Also, I can understand the defeatist cynical argument of accepting the current state of everything and ignoring it. But if everyone had that mindnset, no one would be enjoying the freedom, luxuries, and level of peace that we have now. Everyone has a right to choose whether to participate in an issue (such as the Genshin colorism topic) or not. What I personally despise, is when people look at those who are speaking up about it, and actively go out of their way to discourage them, silence them, and make them give up. "If you're not gonna help, stay out of it if it's a bother to you." That's what I think. The girl in the video did a great job talking about it.
I argument that Mihoyo profits off of other people and thus has a responsibility to represent them is wild. If they're already profitting, that just means that they don't need to change anything because what they are doing clearly works. I personally think more diversity in character designs would appeal to me more, but I'm not a whale who will C6R5 every conventionally attractive waifu in the game. It's the same as demanding more male characters: sure, more variety would be nice, but the banner sales don't lie. Pointing out other gacha games with dark-skinned characters who sold well still isn't a convincing argument; Mihoyo makes the most money, so like it or not, they have the best strategy. I'm sure there are things they could be doing to make even more money, but the data shows that their way is currently the most effective.
idgaf about race color, westard is just being westard. What i do know is that whila Mavuika is hot, some people are claiming that it's the exact same model from Dehya and they just recolor the hair and the skin, idk why it's an issue tho 💀
As an Indian I'm just happy that they incorporated Indian culture in sumeru also most of the background music in sumeru uses Indian instruments like sitar and tabla eventhough china and india are not on good terms at all politically.
Is this like the case of people who cosplay or wear cultural outfits from other countries? Like someone who saw the outfit was disturbed ,Offended and scolded him But when people concerned with that culture are not disturbed, and are instead proud that their culture is appreciated The point is that being disturbed is not part of the culture, and requires something that makes people feel strange I mean the west always has problems, if you say they are racist, look behind you, you (the west) are making jokes about CN with a cing cong voice, and dark skin with a bugagu voice Btw What is the real problem? About criticism? About politics? They demonize it? In my opinion, people who force something, are racist, because they clearly demonize the thing they think is protecting Mention a little about politics, this is like Isriwil Believing propaganda and normalizing genocide, am I wrong? Btw If there is a sentence that is not clear, has a wrong meaning or something is missing, please correct me 😅 Edit: btw im using translate so Maybe there are sentences that are not correct, so please correct me 😅
the lady is all over the place. personally, i dont care abt representations of the people. all i care about is the right reference on culture and major figure in that culture
a the 5:30 mark the Eremites being the only darker skinned representation and being portrayed as bandits and thugs predominantly is a whole other issue. Its the fact that of the 64ish characters there is 4 that are not pale/fair skinned..i dont think its fair to say that oh yes we have dark skinned characters and the its predominately enemy's that you unalive. China its self has always had a colorism issue going back to basically its birth. dark skinned people were seen as lesser farm hand, uncouth cause they couldn't basicly stay inside and study .
"Sumeru is based on Arabs and Indians" This is correct. Although I wouldn't classify Mihoyo as a racist company. I'm brown too but I didn't care much about representation. Just my take.
Dude, YOU AMERICANS OR WHATEVER ARE NOT THE WHOLE WORLD, none should cather to your needs, hoyo is first and foremost a CHINESE COMPANY!!, chinese people FIRST and THEN the rest you people are insane.
I mean if your gonna take inspiration from real gods Latin and African gods (witch are not imaginary BTW) and none of the designs reflect that. They say they want to portray the cultures of these places in every way except the skin tones. it is normal to feel weird about that. Put it this way if their was a game that portrait Europe and every one was black people would lose their minds and i would't blame them. And saying its fictional setting is not a good get back. I mean you could character designs that way. BTW i don't condone harassment in any way i'm just explaining why people feel the why they do.
cultural represetations with food, clothes, architecture and names are enough since you can find Boris Johnson selling kulfi on the streets of Pakistan and there is no reason for the game to have different skin colors since teyvat is small and flat so people are getting the same amount of sunlight.
Nevermind that race issues, color scheming is their real issue there that might contrast on the materials they've been researched beforehand. In general, they didn't do lots of research well. 😂
Guys you aren't really nailing the problem at all,the problem it is not that they make low amount of darker characters but the fact that all tan characters are absolute garbage across all hoyo games
gotta take into account the game is chinese and they make no secret on their beauty standards, why look for representation in that case? its been long enough to know they dont care that much if at all. Is it ok? no, but will it change? not today
There are only three branches of "skin colors" coming from africa, indo-european/mediteranean and east asia. Persians, arabs, europeans, indians and pakistanis are white. There's light to dark skin tones for each of the three branches, and the number of ascendant from a branch decide what "color" you are. The idea that all people from a single branch share some kind of a common cullture is pure garbage. Europeans of white, black or east asian descent, english people included, have more in common culturally with persians and arabs cultures than any people raised in the USA. Just because we live and interact on the same continent. Be reassured, all racists and very conservative people from the europe/asia continent would go mad at me for things I wrote in this post. Sumeru seems to be a mix of indian, arab and persian cultures. People from these countries are white since many centuries ago. And if dark skin tones are common in india/pakistan, it's not the case among persians, for example. If Natlan is based on south america, all first americans are of proto-asian descent. And modern south america population repartition of skin colors and tones is complex, ranging from fair skin white people to dark skin black people, but not everywhere in the same proportions. Modern activists from all horizon should care about the truth as well as they care about their convictions. The truth about Genshin is that they do what sells better, and their big market is China and Japan where the darkest skin tones match the ones we see in Genshin.
I've created an imaginary world. Am i racist? Yes. Of course. You don't even need to know anything about the world. All you need to know is that you weren't given final approval about racial content.
My stance: I do care about ethics and representation. However, when you’re literally faced with the CCP themselves, then there’s nothing you can do about it. 🤷 We already had Sumeru, and it was great overall. Inspiration of said groups of people can be done in genshin, but it won’t be a 100% accurate to real life circumstances.
The game is represent that country like anime or movie. As for the Genshin it takes form other places and country's but making almost most of the characters white or little bit pinkish. If they really on the point with following the skin colors they have to make many many skin colors on the characters. 8:05 as for the skin whiteness The white you are it tells your a rich who don't wok in the outside simple telling in the Asia. As for the skin following hoyo is anime game so I am not hoping brown or black skin character because anime mostly don't have dark skin characters mostly. If I am wrong in this take tell me and correct me
The argument was not about putting black people in every game. It was about taking cultures from black / brown dominant countries, putting it in your game, and bleaching their skin to be white. WuWa's nations are high fantasy and inspired by Chinese mythology, architecture, etc. It's very different from Natlan that is taking inspiration from black / brown dominant areas of the world, yet feels too ashamed to make the cast have darker skin. If the skin of the people whose culture you're borrowing from is that repulsive or shameful, then don't take their culture, architecture, deities, etc. and put it in your game.
We don't care if the company is chinese, the audience is global. We don't care about their beef with the CCP either. That is their problem to deal with, we aren't going to be understanding about colorism in our product. They could at least make global versions of characters different if that's the issue, lazy company. Also, the people saying "as a person of colour" and excusing them- your naivety doesn't help. You are actively promoting that its okay for us to be made fun of, and treated with less dignity and opportunities in the long term. You are shooting your selves/families/chilrdren/whatever applies/ in the foot.
Who cares? Hoyoverse Customer Support already said it's a Piece of Fiction and doesn't represent real people. Deal with it or just drop the game as you should have since Sumeru.
@@arnowisp6244 I care? They make us feel like shit, we make them feel like shit. You don't just sell an all fair skin world globally, to a world of mixed people, and also go on to offend people of some culture they take inspiration from, and expect no backlash. That's just a bad company decision and hey, you can't ever please people entirely but that doesn't mean complaints should stop and companies shouldn't keep trying. Also, the whole fiction shit. Other companies done that (Ubisoft with their black protagonist in a Japanese world), it didn't work out. No one cares about what the game claims when its clearly offensive.
I'm not gonna be suprised if that Geo (Cat?) Mommy in Natlan is all for Coomer bait and have a mid as f*ck kit. Also not surprised by Hoyo making characters almost look alike from one another. Different but almost the same if you look at it enough (i.e. Himeko and Mavuika; Chasca and Chlorinde) Not hating though, just saying what my opinion is.
