We traveled to North Devon to tackle some enjoyable slab routes. Weather predictions showed sunny skies, and the tides created ideal conditions for afternoon climbing. This did not turn out to be the case. We drove to Hartland Quay and gazed across the bay at Screda Point. High tide lingered, keeping the start of the routes underwater. We waited around for it to go out. The forecast warned of rain arriving by 2 p.m., but we only had a short window of opportunity as low tide was not until 1 p.m. We scrambled down the cliffs and into the bay, rock hopping across to our desired location. By the time we were geared up the water receded enough to set things in motion. I launched up a nice straightforward route called Gentle Breeze on a pinnacle. It was graded Hard Severe 4b. The climbing was steady until near the top. I went too high. I needed to take a step back and move right. It started to rain a little and as I placed a piece of gear, the rock sheared off. It was slightly unnerving. Keeping cool I topped out. A great little climb.
