Probably the most underrated and most underappreciated band of the prog era. That bass tone...just so sick. Ray Shulman is definitely one of my fav bass players.
@@francescodamato3345 🌹Ray Shulman, a founding member, with two of his brothers, in the progressive rock band Gentle Giant, died March 30, 2023, at 73. His death was announced by his bandmate and brother, Derek Shulman, today (April 1). Ray Shulman had been battling a long illness, though the specific cause of death wasn’t disclosed. In his Facebook post, Derek Shulman called his brother “my best friend.” He wrote, in part, “Ray really was a genius in so many ways. He was such a kind and caring soul. He was an incredible composer, musician, music producer and tech wizard.
I'm 56 years old. My first favorite band was the Beatles and that lasted until the 70's when Emerson, Lake & Palmer finally took the top position. Then I discovered Frank Zappa and the Mothers and Frank occupied my top spot until I FINALLY discovered Gentle Giant around 2010. I have no idea why it took me so long to find GG but they have been my favorite band ever since.
Yes GG is probably the least known of the greats. I did see them once back in the early '70s but almost forgot about them until a few years ago. But Zappa and Tull have always been my favorite with GG in a tight 3rd. About 20 years ago I added Neal Morse to my top 5.
Since someone just replied to this year old comment ten hours ago, I have now listened to four Cardiacs songs and will also be giving Henry Cow and Stormy Six a listen as well. I can't say for sure how Cardiacs will land in my personal top 100 but after three songs I can safely say that I like them and will be consuming more. I haven't heard the other two bands yet but I will be queuing them up after I binge on Cardiacs for a while first. Thanks for recommending artists that I wouldn't have likely discovered on my own.
Anything Gentle Giant is fine by me I,ve been a fan since 1970, Steven Wilson does an amazing job on albums that are already classics in the prog genre. I have a saying there's prog & there's Gentle.Giant. 🎶
GENTLE GIANT, ARE A GREAT PART OF MY LIFE, SINCE THE BEGINNING......LET'S SAY SIMON DUPREE AND THE BIG SOUND!! STEVEN WILSON IS A GENIUS!!! FANTASTIC WORK!!!
For many decades I've listened to albums by various bands and became convinced that if the production had been better the bands would have been more successful. One band in particular is Man. I had all their albums lost count of how many times I saw them. Similarly, with Gentle Giant. Yes the music is exemplary and unique and that can't and never will be taken away but this 'reworking' by Steve Wilson 'addresses this and bloody hell, something that you thought couldn't be made better in terms of a listening experience most certainly has.
I am more jealous of Steven Wilson than anyone else on the planet. Absolutely brilliant work, so thrilling to hear new details in the favorite music of my youth.
@@Wizardofgoszyes, a very importand fact ... the hardcore fans are partly not amused. But i think it is a good transformation of GG's music in our time.
@@altercharmeur2554 I'm a hardcore fan and I'm amused, and I can spell "important". Just kidding, there's lots of word I can't spell very well (that's deep). .
Steven, you didn't change the composition & you just updated the sound a bit with an amazing video. you are endless : thank God you exist. long live the scorpio's ! GG is timeless !
In my opinion, THE BEST Prog band of all time - reputation unsullied by not reforming and dead horse flogging - take note so many other ageing Prog saddoes
Absolutely love gentle giant but this video had me dying of laughter the entire time wtf 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I love how there's a scene with the hand busting out of the cage to symbol it now being a FREE HAND 😂😂😂😂
As always Gentle Giant is fabulous and Freehand is a great tune. Count me in as one who doesn't need every album by 70s prog bands to be remixed by Steve Wilson. But if you like it then that is fine. As for this video I want to praise Sam Chegini for a wonderful visual feast. Very well done Sam. That must have been a lot of work so thank you for it. As it was moving along I was wondering if at some point it would give a nod to the album cover of Free Hand. And then it happens. The way this video finishes up is just OUT FREAKING STANDING! Bravo Mr. Chegini!
He gave all the instruments more space apart so one can better appreciate how all the parts fit and work together. P.S. Greatest progressive band ever.
Letra Who would believe me now that my hands are free That my hands are free I never thought it would ever come to me Ever come to me Now that my life's my own, I leave you behind Leaving you behind What ever made you think that I'd change my mind That I'd change my mind? It wasn't hard to run, break away from you Break away from you After all you'd done, what was I to do What was I to do? Who's gonna take my place in the games you play In the games you play Nobody's listening now to the things you say And the things you say Now my hands are free from the ties, from the ties Now I look forward to the future, where it lies And with you, feeling low, looking black Here, now my head is clear, why should I look back? When it was over did you have regrets? Did you have regrets? Or did you really think it was over yet? It was over yet? Now that my life's my own I leave you behind Leaving you behind What ever made you think that I'd change my mind That I'd change my mind, that I'd change my mind That I'd change my mind, that I'd change my mind Who would believe me now that my hands are free That my hands are free I never thought it would ever come to me Ever come to me Now that my life's my own, I leave you behind Leaving you behind What ever made you think that I'd change my mind That I'd change my mind? It wasn't hard to run, break away from you Break away from you After all you'd done, what was I to do What was I to do Who's gonna take my place in the games you play? In the games you play Nobody's listening now to the things you say And the things you say and the things you say And the things you say
The impression of reading Alice in Wonderland / On the Other Side of the Mirror (Lewis Caroll) with my ears... Same perceptions, same understandings and encodings ... With great and rare intelligence, each listening is a constantly renewed state of fullness 😊🌟🍸🎵🎻
Remarkable. The depth and separation of it all on my modest but decent PC speakers was a joy to hear. I'm going to have to listen again on my Bottlehead Crack headphone amp and Sennheiser HD 600's!
@@markranfone6393 That's what I have read. Hopefully in the not too distant future the master tapes to IAGH might be found in someone's attic....as long as I'm still alive to hear the finished product though!
@@theboraxbandit9563 Always good to bump into another Cardiacs fan :) In hindsight I think it was an ill-judged request, at least this soon after Tim's passing... but I'd often thought Tim pushed the high-end a bit too much - I seem to recall someone mentioning he'd damaged his hearing and that was the reason. Anyway if there's ever a re-issue or a true 'Best Of' album then I'd love SW to do some respectful tweaking
@@rostokmcspoons Likewise sibling! I have similar thoughts. I tend to EQ the lower end up. I appreciate why he favoured the high end with all of those heavenly melodies in the sky or as Tim called it "Pixie Dust" STG needs it the most with some thinning out too. There's a few remasters kicking about RU-vid, but nothing on SW's level. Let's hope we get lucky and something surfaces :D
the remix are very clean and dynamic. but i miss the distortion of the original british vinyl. same with the beatle remix. very clean. i guess heaing this song the original disk for 50 years, you hear it like it was. still freaking great.
Was sollte ich tun? Marvelous music, of course. Though it sounds like Wilson's done the same thing to the bass guitar here that he did on the Tull remixes: made the bass frequencies much fuller and larger, but at the expense of the midrange and edge of the tone. The overall mix sounds very full and balanced, but I feel like the actual tone of the bass guitar is obscured. It's bigger and duller here. Fortunately, the openness of the arrangement still gives it plenty of space, but Wilson's approach seems to be to lop off the top half of the bass guitar to make room for all the treble sounds he wants to bring up in the mix. It sacrifices the "grunt" in the bass tone.
@@nsgobbi I hear you. It's a very pleasing mix to listen to - full, warm, I like it. The older mix sounds thinner overall in comparison. But it comes with tradeoffs, which include altering the tone of some of the musical voices within it, which is hard for me to ignore.
@@kevgamble You’ve got a point, Kevin. From now on, we enter the field of music perception and subjectiveness, purism and other concepts. Let’s never forget the value of the musical work, that is greater and above all these discussions. Best regards !
@@nsgobbi Absolutely, Newton! This is beautiful music that is a delight to hear, and hopefully this will only help expose more people to it going forward. Cheers!
