Today I heard we lost Ray Shulman. Which led me to this video, which is like medicine, almost a cure. Thanks so much for sharing the love of the music and thus the spirits of it’s creators. Most of all thanks to Ray and Gentle Giant. I shared a room with them twice in my life. Both times the Palace Theater, Albany, NY. circa 1976. Unforgettable. Lifelong memories.
@vandertop2
@vandertop2 7 месяцев назад
I saw them at the Palace Theater around that time too. Were you the opening act for them? I forget who the opening act might have been. There was this jazz-rock trio from the area named Paradox ... maybe they opened?
@frankhoulihanfh4972
@frankhoulihanfh4972 7 месяцев назад
@@vandertop2 The first time I saw Gentle Giant @ The Palace, Albany they opened for Rennaissance. Love Rennaissance though I do, essentially Giant blew them off the stage. It must have been very hard to follow them! The second time a band called Dr. Feelgood opened for them. Proto punk outfit, achieved some measure of subsequent success during the punk/new wave periods. But not that night. They came out and played maybe 5 songs to almost no reaction, then left. On that night Gentle Giant may have been the loudest rock band I have ever heard. Late in the show, the two song combination of I’ll Bet You Thought We Couldn’t Do It and For Nobody were relentlessly blasted out by the band. Both were great shows, but I think I loved the first one more. I also recall being blown away by Funny Ways and Kerry Minnear’s vibes solos, I think at both shows! It is also possible that Kerry may have been the single most talented musician I’ve ever witnessed. They were so great. As a whole, as a band. RIP Raymond. Between he and Kerry they gave the world lots of great music.

Imagine how heartwarming it must be for the band to see so many people dedicating several hours of their time learning this song they wrote almost half a century ago... to know your art is still beloved and appreciated even after all this time. That despite all hardships they must have gone through writing, recording and releasing this, they managed to remain extremely relevant to dozens of people.

My favourite band in my youth, all together again (...I know, well, kinda) A few spotted Derek 'cause he was highlighted, and John cause he pretty well looks the same as in GG days. Can't believe no one else has spotted ALL the surviving band members at [2:09] . Top line: Gary Green, Derek Shulman and Phil Shulman. Bottom line: Ray Shulman, Malcolm Mortimore, John Weathers and Kerry Minnear.

I believe the only former member that is no longer with us is the original drummer Martin Smith. Also, it's interesting that Phil is present because he was out of the band by the time this song was recorded although I suppose the same could be said about Malcom Mortimer but at least Malcolm has played with Three Friends.

For anyone with an interest in the history of the band, there's a trio of fascinating podcasts of interviews with Phil by his son Damon and grandson Elliot. They cover the Shulmans' musical development from the earliest beginnings, through the formation of Simon Dupree and the Big Sound and the transition to Gentle Giant, and on to the reasons behind Phil's decision to leave the band: all fascinating (and priceless) stuff. They can be found on Damon's RU-vid channel: ru-vid.comvideos (An added bonus for anyone seeking solace for the unlikelihood of any new GG material is the inclusion there of much of Damon's music. While not in any way secondhand pastiche GG, it unmistakably possesses many of those signature traits we've grown to love: quirky harmonic and rhythmic inventiveness and an ear for textural complexity as well as the sheer joy of technical virtuosity - albeit through a more contemporary prism. It's the work of a fiercely independent intelligence which honours the family tradition rather than exploiting it: Damon's clearly inherited his forbears' musical DNA right down to his fingertips (try 'When We Were', 'Forever' and 'Telead' for starters, maybe). Not only that, but he's passed it down to the next generation: the latest addition to the site is the EP 'Feeding Frenzy' by his band Replikin, which includes all three of his sons: 'Three Friends' isn't the only album featuring four Shulmans!)

I can't stop watching this. When they disbanded 40 years ago, I kept looking for follow up material in other projects. Bands break up all the time, but talented bands usually morph into one or more new groups. And this band had talent to burn! If this is the last thing I see Gentle Giant do, I'll still be happy. But, please tell me there is a vault of music somewhere from any of the band that we haven't heard yet.

Sorry but no. Derek spent quite a bit of time as the successful (!) head of PolyGram signing Bon Jovi, Dream Theater and others. Way better than playing to a 40%-full Golders Green auditorium and losing money everywhere they went. Virtually zero chance for a reunion beyond the Three Friends project.

Seeing Lee Pomeroy playing is so good. Wearing a Gentle Giant T-Shirt is awesome. Only a man with that good taste could be called to both play with Yes (replacing Chris Squire) and Jeff Lynne's ELO, playing a terrific bass!!! Congrats, Lee!!!!!

Also Lee Pomeroy already played with Three Friends the band of Gary Green. He knows all the music of Gentle Giant. Saw him twice. After Three Friends he joined Steve Hackett. You can find some clips here on RU-vid

Astounding!! Derek's voice seems unchanged. Lovely to see Kerry and Ray play banjo, which was very original and unexpected. Gary is as precise and energetic as ever. And it was thrilling to spot Phil, Malcolm, John and Paul (Weathers and Mortimore, of course). Really got me goosebumps!!

Shulman dynastic succession at 1:13. Phil top right, then, anticlockwise, son Damon and grandsons Elliot, Rowan and Joel , all continuing the family tradition by playing in bands.

I saw Gentle Giant one time they opened for Strawbs one of my favorite concerts of all time.Both were equally amazing. Ray's bass sound was stunning, the whole band was jaw dropping good. They were Progressive Rock at it's finest. I'm grinning from ear to ear watching this, BRAVO, STUPENDOUS, ENCORE

That is stunning! The best thing to happen throughout lockdown, no question. I haven’t smiled so much in months, and to see all the Giants singing together.... a maze zing. Want to read the behind the scenes story... I’m still grinning.
