This scene is so necessary! It really highlights how limited women's options were back then. As much as I wish Mariana had the courage to just be with her "Fred", I think we also need to take into account that Mariana has experienced the comfort of what it's like to have society's approval. Anne never has and in a way, neither has Ann; in her scene with the hardcastle boy, Anne mentioned how even when she tried to conform and dress up as a woman, people still mistook her for a man. For Ann, since her parents' death and her mental health problems, people have always treated her like an invalid or are after her money. Anne and Ann have always been outsiders so society's approval mattered very little to them to begin with as neither of them has ever had it. And as of the series, Anne and Ann are both financially independent; they have security and are safe to reject society. If Mariana had been with Anne, she would have been dependent on Anne entirely. Financially, that would have put her in the same position as her having married a man but with even less security as there are no rules in place to ensure that Mariana would have been taken care of. If you think about it, Mariana also has pretty low self-esteem, not unlike Ann, where she doesn't think she's smart and charming and could survive the world like Anne could. Ann at least has 2000 pounds to lend Anne in her time of need (and still be very well off), but what does Mariana bring to the table? I understand Mariana feeling insecure and wanting to take the "smart", safe route in life, especially since she's gotten accustomed to a certain level of financial comfort. This is also a time when marriage and love are two separate things. Marrying is just something everybody does, especially for women. Anne doesn't understand that imperative as she has always been rewarded for not conforming; she gets to travel, people admire her for her singularity. This is not the case for Mariana. I get why Anne is so pissed off at Mariana, but I don't think Anne truly understood Mariana's position. The true culprit is a society that makes women dependent on men and their only worth being the "reputation" and dowry they bring with them.

Life Drawing Absolutely correct on all accounts! It sheds light upon the very limited choices woman has back then, and the calculated maneuvering they had to make to ensure there security. We see this in the many novels of Jane Austin, as loveless marriages were arraigned based of the financial wealth of either parties to attain social status and power. How even after marriage, a woman’s financial security was never securely guaranteed, as the male heir inherited all equities after the spouse death. With that said, I completely understand Marianna’s decision to secure her livelihood by marring a man. BUT, I don’t think she should have had secret sexual liaisons with Anne for years and years, keeping them both locked into an emotional stalemate, in order to ensure her financial stability. It seems everyone was ‘cheating’ in this 3 person relationship (Charles, Marianna & Anne), and in the end, no one gained a damn thing, except a broken-heart and a venereal disease, which they never got completely rid of. It seems not much has changed over the years, we may have more choices now, but we still deal with a lot of the same problems. Rich or poor, you have to be contend with choices and consequences, while striving towards change. It’s a heart issue; you have a choice to be happy with whatever life brings to you in any given situation.

It is just mariana isnt anne's destiny.... And in past, society looks like more important than love except for them who brave enough to fight

"The true culprit is a society that makes women dependent on men and their only worth being the "reputation" and dowry they bring with them." the other true culprit is women who choose o take actions and make choices that ensure that women will continue to stay subordinate to men. while holding men and never themselves accountable for their bad and weak minded choices.

Why would they cut that conversation with Mariana? It beautifully explains the social context of her inability to commit to Anne... and how much marriage was about surviving and not so much about love.

fantastic. I love every single frame. I hope all are eventually incorporated into extended versions on Blu ray versions (where they are not constrained to 60 min episodes) This scene deftly incorporates so much of what AL actually wrote about in her journals.

Mariana's intents & motives were exposed like an open wound. Sure, she loved Anne but the fact of the matter is that Ms. Lister was the ultimate back-up plan. How sad.

Ridiculous that Anne and Mariana's scene was cut, it adds ALOT of context to their relationship. Felt sorry for Mariana in this scene. Happy to share it.

They should have left this in! Gives a bit of insight to what drove Mariana but it still doesn’t excuse her completely. She had no prospects? Sure but I think that when they were young and together, Anne may not have gotten Shibden yet but Anne would have done everything and anything to make sure Mariana was taken care of if with her. She loved her so much then that Mariana wouldn’t have needed. They could of just lived at Shibden then or something. Anne has always been clever, smart, innovative and I strongly believe she would have done anything to make sure they had what they needed. The coal was there so the riches would of come eventually. Social pressures and all that, her love for Anne clearly wasn’t enough to withstand it. I feel bad for her but I can’t excuse her. Not when she had such a character in her corner like Anne. IMHO. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Is it me or What. That bed must have been very uncomfortable to sleep on because when Sophie climbed on it, her right foot landed so hard 😄 you can even hear the thud 😂 plus she didn’t bounce. Dhang... Poor Sophie Rundle. Wonder how many takes they did the sister moment bedroom scene 🤔. Anyhow, thank you for posting this clip.

Why doesn’t the HBO version have these great scenes. Also, HBO hasn’t released episode 7 and 8 on On Demand yet..there has to be a reason, not sure what it is. Come on HBO, Gentleman Jack is the reason I didn’t cancel my subscription after GOT ended..

Hi Carol, all 8 episodes are on HBO. It's July 6th and I have been watching all episodes for the past 2 weeks, more than once. I had tears in my eyes watching the last 35 minutes of the last episode...True, True Love Wins⚘

When watching on the BBC iPlayer service you will need to register with an account. It's free and easy to do, you just need to use a British postcode, use any London one. For the VPN, you can use NordVPN or CyberGhost, I use CyberGhost it's brill. I have the paid version which connects me directly to the BBC iPlayer when I want to watch something from the website. Haven't tried if the free trial version will connect to the iPlayer, I've been using CyberGhost VPN with years. Here is the link to CyberGhost if you want to try it out www.cyberghostvpn.com/en_US/?media_source=google_adwords&campaign=Ireland-Search-Brand&adgroup=CyberGhost-Derivatives-Exact&keyword=ghost%20vpn&matchtype=e&extension=&brand=ppc&coupon=3yEuDo&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIu7bN5dOi4wIVFvhRCh38vA7UEAAYASAAEgKDGvD_BwE
