Unbelievable accident occurred during the first-ever appearance of the NASCAR Crasftsman Truck Series at Daytona International Speedway in 2000. Crowd was stunned when Geoff Bodine's truck was sent into the outer catch fencing after racing three-wide at the start/finish line. Despite the fiery tumble, Bodine was able to fully recover from his injures, and returned to racing later on, a true testament to NASCAR's strict safety rules.

its awesome seeing the massive crowd there for a truck race. NASCAR has done such a terrible job promoting this series

This was one of the scariest, most gut-wrenching moments I ever experienced watching NASCAR... but you know, Bodine was one of the guys responsible for making NASCAR safer than it was in the rough old days. It was good to see it pay off in a personal way for him, and is good to know that he's still got the fire inside. Really excellent footage you got, there. Thank you very much for sharing it.

in the slow motion shot, you can actually see the catch fence ripping the engine and forward area from the fire wall forward off!

@GearheadGeisha

Damn. That is an astounding shot. None of us really got to see what happened to his truck until after he came out of the fireball. This type of shot really helps to understand the nature of the crash better, and it's excellent footage. I still can't believe that he survived, with relatively minor injuries too! As you can see, his saving grace would seem to be that he never did suffer a sudden stop. That, and Lonnie Rush Jr. seemed to hit the undercarriage rather than the top of the cage.

How Bodine survived this is beyond me.
@carwhiz90

Andrew Parks during the prerace segment of the 2001 Daytona truck race, Ray Dunlap says Bodine attributes the race seat in the truck that saved his life. The tightness of the seat with duel head rests to the left and right is what contributed to him staying alive during the crash. Safety is the number 1 priority in NASCAR
@CJODell12

When I shot this, Bodine's truck came off the fence and was immediately punted by the #27 truck of Lonnie Rush Jr.; this sudden and additional upward burst of motion caused me to quickly "zoom out" to try and locate Bodine's truck again. In slo-motion you can see this occur, and equally amazing is separation of the small-block engine in a tumbling fireball, plus complete front end suspension parts.

Worked maintenance at a track in Canada, the crash was so severe it took off the drivers arm, he was passed out at the time. Fire Crews had never seen such carnage let alone blood at a race track, well I’ll tell ya that picking up the Drivers arm was the single biggest, and last thing I ever did. Lucky, getting the arm on ice and off to the Hospital saved his arm….2 years later he was racing again…….

Strange, from the original angle, I thought that Bodine's truck went COMPLETELY into the fencing (left-side first). From this new one, though, can see that the nose "catching" the fence (and the #27 hit him right after) made this crash more devastating!

Well if you take in account the hits after Bodine made contact with the fence, than totally agreed that Bodine's was much worse. I was just looking at the initial impact with the fence and Larson had a harder hit it appears. Both very scary incidents. I couldn't believe the damage to the 32 yesterday.
