I ref youth hockey, and when I hear kids(peewee or lower) swearing, I tell them I keep a bar of soap in my ref bag and not to make me get it. Usually makes them and the coach laugh.
If I had a nickel for every time that happened to Florida this year, I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it has happened twice
My favorite hot mic moment was at a Ducks preseason game around 2009 or so. The ref announced the penalty then turned to the player and said,” if you put your stick in his nuts you’re getting a penalty every time!”
Seems cheap by the ref to get physical. The player can't throw back, not only because he's all padded up but also because he'd get in way too much trouble.
As a New Yorker, I must say that I love it when refs throw the F word around and give it right back to the players. Calling someone out that bluntly sounds beautiful to me.
Whenever I get frustrated with NHL refs, I watch another sport and realize it could be so much worse. We could have Angel Hernandez on skates trying to sort out goaltender interference.
NHL refs are the bottom of the barrel. We shit on Angel Hernadez, but he still gets 92% of his calls right. Meanwhile at least 92% of all crosschecks go uncalled.
@@UltimaKeyMaster Could you imagine Angel Hernandez as a ref in the NHL? I would think that there would be lots of fights around him so he would catch "stray" punches until he either retired or got his shit straight.
Only sport worse is baseball, NHL zebras are trash, due in huge part to the league wanting them to call games a certain way and ignore their own rules when convenient, garbage.
Imagine how much a regular spectator misses about the game when we dont hear most of the chatter going on at ice level. Everytime you get some sort of mic'd up moment its like a treat.
It's quite funny watching people argue with a ref. I don't even get why they do it, I've never seen a ref go back on a call, but I have seen quite a few additional penalties for players lipping off at the ref. All I do is sit back in my net, and watch players who hopefully aren't mine get an extra penalty or two lol
Arguing with a referee is useless. I mean, the final decision will always be the referee's. Some players are just bored and love wasting time, I guess.
What is the NHL doing though. I'd pay to hear this stuff. Everyone already hates the refs so what's the harm? In fact it will get them sympathy if we see what they put up with.
The problem is the league doesnt want the general public to see just how fluid the rules can be. The refs dishing out street justice constantly wont sit well with the losing fans.
There is some truth to that, but not as much as we'd like. Most times, NHL refs really are trying to keep the game under control, moving, and as honest as possible. If there is a dirty, worst kept secret about reffing, it's swallowing that whistle once the playoffs start.
This is about the only reason I wish Ireland (not just Belfast) had pro hockey teams. This kind of player-referee interaction in a proper Irish accent would be just priceless to listen to😂 (sorry, New England just doesn’t come close. Then at least Brooklyn/Newark or Siciliano/Pugliese would be awesome, too)
I love how it starts with pretty mild annoyance and then rapidly escalates into “forgetting you had the mic on” moments. Good stuff though, cracks me up
That last clip was great i remember that! I loved those jerseys the bolts had for their 3rd jersey and tucker was an amazing guy when he played. Great skill and tough too.
McGoo at the end is absolutely the best part - and now I have new parenting technique for when my teenagers are being dumbasses. *Poof* there you go in yer room, shut yer yap and close the door LOL
Lmao...y'know, the refs in any sport catch crap for enforcing the rules but hockey refs are in an absolute class of their own. Some of them skate nearly as fast as the players and skate up and down the ice all game long, break up fights, get hit by the puck occasionally. My hat is off to them. They have to referee a game with some of the toughest, most hostile and eccentric athletes in all of sports, all in real time.
You missed that one clip from either this season or last, where the NHL player was beaking off the ref from the box, and the stripes literally just shot back with "Do you want another one [penalty]?" That shit was gold
