Geoff is so amazing at breathing new life into these old songs I grew up listening to. Sixteen Tons, Shenandoah (Tennessee Ernie Ford). From the day he released Sixteen Tons we have non stop been begging him to do this one by Jimmy Dean. I remember Mr. Dean singing this song on his TV show way back in the 1960s

I think that's why he gave a nod to 'Sixteen Tons' in this one. White tank Geoff at the end of the song slams the pickaxe and the *room* shakes just like he and camerawoman extraordinaire Kathy did in the video for 'Sixteen Tons'. His reworking of these older songs are so musically and vocally satisfying because of the attention to detail he brings to all aspects of these productions. It shows both his artistry and that he always strives to bring a quality product to us listeners. I, for one, could play his and Voiceplay's catalogue on repeat and not feel its played out for a long time.

Geoff's talent as an arranger really shows in this video. He puts in lots of intricate dynamics and change-ups that really freshen up the song, and Kathy does a wonderful job as videographer! When I see the actual set (it's filmed in a 'junk' storeroom) and then the finished video, I can't believe the difference. Lovely reaction Jennifer, it is so fun to watch you reacting and singing along to the low and high notes!

Other vocal coaches noticed how he didn't close off on "save" and actually spoke the last part of it. His voice is built for this, since it took his voice lower on the "ve-uh" spoken than it would have sang; plus, it wouldn't have sounded right, otherwise... it was absolutely brilliant the way he did it.

This is the second song that Geoff- has redeemed for me. There is something truly magical in his arrangements, I swear it. Anyhoo, glad you picked up on that breathy drop on 'save'. I've noticed that this is a thing I hear more from him recently; letting the end of a word or phrase just kind of drop like that, almost into a soft growl- it stood out to me as well in God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, most notably at about 2:42 ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-l8Sxh5E2u_g.html ) in that video, but at least one at time at the very beginning (much quicker and more quietly), at about 0:34 ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-l8Sxh5E2u_g.html ). (DON'T CLICK THE TIMESTAMPS; follow the links in parentheses) It's a fascinating vocal detail to choose, subtle but creating an interesting texture to the sound. Geoff is almost unfairly talented- but isn't it *wonderful*? 😄

HI Jen, A few interesting things about this video. First the song itself goes back to 1961 and I think was the Billboard country song of the year. The artist was Jimmy Dean and was a somewhat popular Country artist. Country music was really not all that popular or polished at that time and came into its own in the area of the late 80's. The expression used by the Country music media for the improvement was that country music had come " Up Town". Geoff is or was ( don't know) a member of Voice Play and they were also a part of the show " Sing Off" that was a somewhat similar show to Britain's Got Talent, but for A Capella groups. I think Home Free won the year that Voice Play was on the program and Pentatonix had won the year before. All three of those groups have done pretty well.. What also is interesting is that Voice Play and Voctave are both from the Orlando , Florida area ? I live in Florida and Florida is not the mecca of musicians. The music scene and the quality of the musicians is sort of so-so here. I imagine that is coincidence. Thanks Jen, We love you
@JenniferGlatzhofer
@JenniferGlatzhofer 2 года назад
Thanks for the insight, Phil!! Much appreciated 😁
@joyfulyes
@joyfulyes 2 года назад
I think what comes out of Orlando, apart from whatever degree of musical excellence one sees or doesn't see in its denizens, is the showmanship aspect. VoicePlay is an example of this. The members (Geoff is still one) and their close associates display a whole stable worth of talents, which they put forth without stint, and the results are something very special. Their videos, with the sets, costumes, makeup, camera work, special effects... The vocal arrangements (which are almost all by Geoff and Layne, I believe)... Plus the sheer energy and heart they put forth. The attention to detail in both music and visuals. The willingness to make fools of themselves in the funny bits. And the sense that these are the nice neighbor boys down the street putting together a pageant and having a blast, yet it's so professional where it needs to be. I love that they do a lot of Disney covers. So much variety of material to explore, and all wholesome. Beyond how well any group did on The Sing-Off, I think these guys have devoted themselves to their music ever since and it has paid off. In my mind they now creatively outperform Home Free and Pentatonix, and they just keep growing. And it's seen in Geoff's solo work as well. And I think this whole spirit comes, in large part, from that Orlando and Disney environment and exposure, which he and most of the rest of VoicePlay seem to have had. Sorry, I lost track of whether I was on a VoicePlay or a Geoff video.

He said he chose Home Free to sing with him because, quote, 'They know harmonies.' It was the 50th anniversary re-release of the iconic song. He basically gives each member of Home Free their own verse then joins them for every chorus. Their beatboxer performed non-stop for the *entire 8 minute song without a break.* I heard he almost passed out from that.

Hey Jennifer, your low notes are getting better! When I hear Geoff's low notes I wonder if I should turn in my man-card. ( Yes, even at 70, I still have my man-card). I still want/ not want to see you lip sync Geoff's low note so it looks like you singing it. The only reason I don't want to see it is because then I would have nothing left to live for. Thanks for making my day brighter!

Awesome reaction to this cover! You often are able to illustrate for me vocal techniques I could hear but not really notice for their uniqueness and difficulty. Thank you!

I like how he mixed in the accompaniment and how he mixed his base dives at the end of each verse, but he tends to over dramatize which sometimes diminishes the affect. I loved the original. It was slow and repetitive, but the lyrics made it an iconic narrative tale. This falls short for me until the last 2 verses when he goes into the higher contrast. Loaded with talent, love the use of the different voices but in shying away from the original I think he lost the heart of the song.
