+geo taylor I think more its likely thats she's from one of those twins Abaco and Grand Bahama. Because these are the whites by this video. Greets from less sunny the Netherlands.
+Joeri Groen i'm actually from freeport island myself, or i guess Grand Bahama is the propper term, and theres way more blacks here than there are whites, and he actually missed out alot of islands and alot of info, i figured she was from eleuthera, or abaco, because there white population is probably the highest, but there are white ppl on all of the bahamian islands
+geo taylor cool I've never met a Bahamian. I didn't know that. I tought rich buisnessmen from Europe and the US live in Grand Bahama. I think I might add my own youtube channel about vairious countries. Geography Now is so inspiring for me. Do you know her?
ShockD lol, they had a lot of time on their hands back then, I'm Bahamian and only know a handful of the other islands, albeit they're the most important islands
The boy carrying the conch shells at 6:51 is actually one of my best friends, this photo was taken on exuma at a place called "chat and chill" in 2009, I remember it clearly because I was there. It's funny as hell seeing it here in this video
A lot of tourists see Atlantis as the "Disney world" of the Bahamas. That mega resort look and feel get's a lot of cliche tourists, but some tourists find their way to the other islands to get away from the typical commercial mega resorts found in New Providence/Nassau. -And yes, we get tourists that get mad and complain to us when it rains.
I was a tour guide in Niagara Falls for a long time and always had tourists (mostly from the US) get angry and complain to us whenever the weather was bad.
After watching this I feel like when your gonna get to New Zealand you will call us the Hawaii of Australia. We are not Australia's Hawaii we are Australia's Canada.
Its crazy to see how fast you are improving, the editing is really good and you writing is much better getting more ideas over more clearly in a shorter amount of time. This sounds like I am talking down to you, but I promise i am not. Keep up this awesome work dude.
@@urangames457 So funny to see that comment from 7 years ago, and now the channel has a whole cast of recurring characters. Geography Now out here with a damn extended universe at this piont, but you can tell even back then that Paul has always had a passion for what he does, and it shines through then and still now!
Hey Paul, I just wanted you to know that I've been to Bahrain many times, (Manama is a beautiful city) and If you need me to clarify anything, or if you want me to help add information, you can email me at bennyboy317@gmail.com.
Loraine Codrington lol we get that but they are literally horrendous pronunciations...literally words he can just use plain phonics on he adds a foreign accent to which throws off the name eg. Acklins Island is pronounced just as it is spelled Ak-linz , but he gives a soft c sound and says Ask-Linz or Bimini is Bih-mih-nee but he says Bee-mee-nee
I feel like history teachers should use videos like these to show to students: make it a way for students to be entertain whiles receiving insightful information. Really liked this video!
You briefly mentioned the embassy in Japan. For about a decade, Bahama's ambassador to Japan was actually Sidney Poitier, the world-famous Oscar-winning actor (and sometimes director). He was actually born in Florida, but his family was Bahamian and he was mainly raised in the Bahamas, so he has dual-citizenship.
Having spent about a month this past spring in Freeport, I really hope that Grand Bahama and the rest of the country can overcome Dorian. I'm from Chile and loved the island and the people.
Worth it, but aim for Exumas, preferably South Exumas, just amazing. They have tiny sandspit like islands at the ends of some of the sandbars too, worth putting up a tent and enjoying the night.
erika Campbell so what's stopping you?Come visit our country any time.My name is Sheree Neymour I live on Andros island and as he says its not a slum.Tourist from all over the world choose coming to our island to relax and enjoy nature
erika Campbell if u ride down to Florida u can catch a ferry for about $150 Then that'll take u to Grand Bahama If u don't want to stay there u can't catch a ferry or plane to Abaco Or Nassau for less than 100 bucks If u go to Nassau u can catch a fast ferry just about anywhere and stay in a bonefish lodge (google it) or use airbnb(yh we have dat) I suggest coming in the summer cause that's when regattas happen or coming in the winter for Junkanoo This is a guide from an andros nativ btw
I love the Bahamian accent. To my ears, it's 1/3 Afro-Caribbean lilt, 1/3 British, and 1/3 American Deep South. It's unlike anywhere else in the region.
@@MM-gp9mb Genuinely, as someone from the Bahamas, it's high-pitched and sounds like ignorance, but I do like the African words mixed in with the english.
although this video is old and it is 2019, after the passing of hurricane dorian q devastated this beautiful country. I still have a huge dream of knowing the Bahamas
Great video! Being from The Bahamas I am super happy to see my country being represented - however would have loved if you looked into pronunciation before making the video the way you said Bahamian (you said ba- haa -mean sounds more like bahAmian (really pronounce that middle a )) was incorrect and thats pretty important also the names of islands can be pretty confusing but never hurts to ask for help! All in all though great video glad to see you representing the great 242
My Geography class just made it to the B’s and wanted to send a thank you for allowing them to yell, in class, at the top of their lungs, the Geography NOW song! 😂 🇧🇸 🇧🇭 🇧🇩 ... #LMCHS
@Kj_mast_er There is a lot of stigma against them with them coming in and becoming 25% of our population. Overall a lot of older bahamians have a distaste for them. That's what I meant
I was thinking about starting up a learning channel as well. Pitching ideas off the wall here, but my idea was a channel that would explore the relations between two groups of people throughout history. Basically, I would do videos on the historic relations between the Aboriginals of Australia and the Indonesians, or the relationship between the tribes of Japan and the tribes of Korea and China, or the relationship between France and England throughout history. Just throwing shit at a wall here and seeing what sticks. Does anyone think they'd be interested in such a channel idea? I ask because Geography Now is a recent "learning" channel, and I love it, so I thought I could go into more detail about the conflicts of groups that form the nations today.
You may want to add that Columbus landed on San Salvador (which he named himself) making it the birthplace of the new world. (Granted that it was already inhabited but that's a different argument)
Hey where are you from? How dare you take a few pictures of our island and call it a slum. You owe our people an apology .I think our island can carry you to court for this crappy name
I am very offended by the term slum being used when describing my beautiful island...Andros! Andros is home to some of the most well built housing in the Bahamas...even more so than most of the more developed neighboring islands you spoke of! Obviously you have not traveled here otherwise your information would have been more informative and accurate. Also you have incorrectly pronounced the names of almost every island....
he did say it was incorrect stereotype, also people will mispronounced names if their not native, it not his fault as long as he tries to get it right.
They couldnt withstand Hurricane Dorian, its totally destroyed..i hope and pray that every country helps then now..all those rich and famous people that have homes there should be the first to help.. I pray for the people there..
He sure did...he needs to research by speaking with a Ba-ha-mi-an person and reviewing his data...I'm descendant of Harbour Island etc. and he needs to research more and etc.🇧🇸💯❤
Being a Bahamian and hearing you pronounced some of the words wrong was cute..but most of what you covered is true. Some have other explanations as Bahamians we know that we expect others not to really know unless you hear it from us but great work 😊😊
You’ve got it wrong, I live in The Bahamas myself, the yellow represents the sun . We have pink sand beaches not golden , the blue represents the skies and the seas , and the black represents the color of the people
”Sometimes you just gotta punch somebody in the face to develop a good friendship with them.” Funny that you should mention that, because it *HAS* happened to me. Once in elementary school, this one kid came up to me with a gang of sixth-graders and started attacking me, so, knowing, who the leader was, I literally punched him in the face, and that was the end of that, his gang broke, and he became my underling. True story.
Fun facts (well not fun but whatever) "Andros" is an island in Greece and "Eleuthera" means "the free-one" in greek. Although I have no idea why they would give these names to them... still amazed :D
Robert I Baratheon Eleuthera was named by the Eleutheran adventurers, who were a group of people from Bermuda seeking religious freedom! you can read more about them online
Andros, Bahamas, also, ironically, was the place where many Greek-Bahamians first went to work on the sponge-diving boats. I do know there's a connection - Our Andros was named after the Greek one, but it's been a long time since I've thought about that history.
Good job. I'm impressed. Our country is always being misrepresented, or documented with entirely false information. Aside from a few minor mistakes you did an awesome job! Thank you.
Good luck to the Bahamas in their recovery from Dorian. Hopefully Geography Now showed many people just how unique of a country it is, and that in their greatest time of need, they are worth helping.
Fun fact: If Puerto Rico was a fully independent country, it would be the wealthiest place in Latin America. Although, the Bahamas's wealth is close to that of Puerto Rico's.
As a Bahamian I got too say.....This is all true. Should have talked more on the relations to other Caribbean Nations but you were spot on. Although you mispronounce some of the island names wrong but like I said, you were spot on.
Bimini (Bi as in bin) (mi as in mitt) (ni as in knee), Abaco (A as in at) (ba as in baa) (co as in coat). Aquamarine NOT blue: represents sky and sea, Gold NOT yellow: sun and sand, Black represents the strength of the people Mt Alvernia is only 206ft
Learn to pronounce, Bahamian, Bimini and Abaco etc. The yellow in the flag is for the sun. My mom is from Andros, it is not a slum. I visited every year as a child. I cannot even finish this video.🇧🇸
Oh, Flag is aquamarine, black and gold; not yellow. Bahamas is not richest in caribbean because its not in the caribbean its in the Atlantic ocean. It only belongs to CARICOM for trade purposes. Visitors to the Country are not 80% American. its largely American, Canadian and European. Oh and pronunciations where way off. lol. lIKE Abaco. A- as in Apple, Ba as in Back, Co as in Coco cola.
The Bahamas is in the Caribbean region! Barbados is also in the Atlantic Ocean but considered Caribbean. Guyana is in South America for God's sake! lol
