This world geography lesson focuses on the factors of the Southeast Asia Culture. Settlement of the region, diffusion of religion, colonization, and the effects of independence are featured.
The two theories of the settlement of the Southeast Asia archipelago are explained as is the establishment of rice agriculture in the region.
Three main divisions of Buddhism: Therevada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana are briefly discussed along with how Therevada and Mahayana Buddhism moved into SE Asia. The Khmer Empire's Angwor Wat is examined as well.
The lesson ends with the impact of European colonization which not only created Shell Oil Company, but led to the situation in French Indochina that brought the United States to war and set the conditions for Pol Pot's "Killing Fields".

Thank you for sharing this video. As one of the survivors during the khmer rouge holocaust. I was born into and raised during it. I was not educated. Came to the United states at the age of 14. Went straight to high school with not a word in English. Long story short, for the past few years I've been self educated thru utube. Thank God for utube. I love learning world history. I wish there's more history on khmer empire.

Thanks for sharing this, this is helpful. Regarding to Buddism in South East Asia, Indonesia has also been consisted of several Hindu-Budha kingdoms. In the 7-9th century, the Syailendra dynasty built Borobudur temple, which is a Mahayana Buddist temple: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borobudur

@rueschhoffteaches
@rueschhoffteaches 2 года назад
I skipped that an a whole lot more. One of the difficult decisions is what to discuss and what to skip. Unfortunately, when you are making a video about the culture of a region that was first settled some 25,000 years ago, there is going to be a lot that is skipped. I appreciate that you cared enough to post. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

Interesting I assume this would be an american conception of south east asian to focused on vietnam and its war. Even though one of the reason why american are comfortable of losing in Vietname is because of its success in defeating communist in Indonesia (the third largest outside soviet and china) of course forgetting its role in communist genocide in Indonesia. (Which i wouldn’t blame you, US only declassify some of its record of involvement in 2017..many other still aren’t declassified)
@rueschhoffteaches
@rueschhoffteaches 3 года назад
While I did discuss the Vietnam War, as a teacher of American students I feel it is important to provide information on that conflict as it has had an effect on American foreign policy as well as the relationship that many Americans have with their government. However, I don't think that the main focus of this lesson was on that conflict. I did try to portray an objective discussion of the conflict. I'll concede that the issues in Vietnam are far more complicated and complex than the 3 minutes I had to give in this lesson. There has been some interesting scholarship that discusses not only the assassination of Diem as well as interviews with General Giap that Dr. Moyar was able to have before Giap's death which adds even more complexity to the war. I am aware of the relatively recent revelations of the US role in Indonesia, I did not discuss as the revelations are rather recent and without a great deal of scholarship available on the matter, I made a decision (perhaps erroneously) to not address this in a 14-minute lesson which attempts to provide a general overview of the events that have shaped the culture in Southeast Asia. I hope you can understand. I do appreciate your concern. Thank you for caring enough to post. Mr. Rueschhoff

Why did the Us feel the need to support South Vietnam in the first place?
@rueschhoffteaches
@rueschhoffteaches 2 года назад
The most repeated reason is that the United States believed that communism would spread to Vietnam. The North had attempted to take South Korea in 1950, the Soviets had taken Hungary in 1956, and we just had the Cuban Missile Crisis. American foreign policy at this time was certainly viewed through these red-lensed glasses.

Mahayana Buddhism wasn't originated from China Korea Japan (aka East Asia). Before the 12th century Mahayana was very popular in SEA before got stripped by Theravada spreading from Sri Lanka to Myanmar. And the map you presented is embarrassing outdated, Mahayana Buddhism in the ancient Eastern mainland is proven by newest archaeological and historical evidence, has been attested by numerous historians, to be at first spread from south Vietnam to north via Indian monks, not from China down to Vietnam.

Ben Kiernan in his 2rd newest book "Vietnam" : Buddhism spread to Vietnam (as whole modern geographically country) via Indian monks during the second century, which cites the Records of the Three Kingdoms (Sanquozhi) and newest archaeological data analyzed by Dr. Nishino Noriko

Srilanka also had mahayana and also vajirayana until 1200's when king "Parakramabahu" got all 3 schools (mahayana, theravada and vajirayana) and made them all into one... I recently got to know that inscriptions surrounding Borbudhur have references to monks learning at "Abhayagiri" in Anuradhapura.... I believe Abhayagiriya payed a huge part in that regions mahayana tradition.
