You can learn to read Cyrillic in an hour or so. I did it myself. You don't need to speak Russian but you can then identify and spell places. Please do that.
@healtehshit
@healtehshit 5 лет назад
@` Half the letters are already the same. you just gotta learn some of the wierd looking ones and whats their counter letter in english. then your good to go
@johnvictorengland7703
@johnvictorengland7703 5 лет назад
@` It's easy - just learn what phonetic sounds the letters make. I learned the Greek alphabet just through my university physics, math and engineering classes so now I can "read" Greek. Russian is similar enough to Greek to where I can always guess what the words are saying. For an example, in this case I could read that the writing on the building said something like "POLIKLINIKA".
@healtehshit
@healtehshit 5 лет назад
@B. Root thats good to know. didn't knew that
@piranha5211
@piranha5211 5 лет назад
@` You don't learn the entire language in an hour, you just learn the alphabet; around 30 different squiggles, some of which are the same as in the Latin alphabet you already know. You won't actually be able to read (that implies understanding), but you will be able to sound out writing and that usually means that you can look up meanings in Google Translate and figure out place names even without help. This isn't difficult for Cyrillic because it developed from Greek uncial script; Peter the Great also westernized it in the 18th century. Once you know the Russian version, you can quickly learn what differences exist in other languages using a Cyrillic alphabet. Greek is pretty easy too; most of us already know some Greek letters from math. It is harder for languages that use abugidas (consonant+vowel combination units such as Thai), syllabaries (the consonant+vowel unit cannot be split apart; Japanese has two plus logographs), and inconceivable for those that use logographs (Chinese).

I'll give you some Brazil tips: - There's a public phone down the street that says "Oi" in it. That's a Brazilian company - Bradesco is a Brazilian bank, they are all over the country. - License plates have 3 letters and 4 numbers and they are gray (although they've changed recently) - Citroen, Honda, Fiat, Ford, Chevrolet, Renault, Peugeot are super common here Well Park, estacione bem, "estacione bem" can be roughly translated to "park nicely" or "well parked", I wouldn't notice this horrible pun if you didn't mention it.

I even managed to get Chelyabinsk correct, as I think the name of the city is barely readable in Cyrillic as the last word on the plate on the side of the truck that is parked nearby (at least you can kind of see the initial "Ч..." and the "...инск" ending, that is...) 1 - I looked so much for Boulevard Tirou. Charleroi was literally my first thought and the first city i looked at. I even looked at french cities near the border and Luxembourg too. Looked at every major city of Belgium with french named roads. Couldn't find it. Was split up between Charleroi, Mons and Brussels for my final decision, it didn't look as much as a such major city but Brussels had more Boulevards and smaller ones that i could miss so ended up going there. 4825 points. 2 - Found Bunbury literally as i zoomed in for the first time in Australia. Looked for churches in Bunbury but ended up finding it through the Australian Post. 5000 points. 3 - Looking around the south coast of Salvador. Looked better where the direction of the roads correlated. Was looking for Moura (which i thought it was an hotel) and for the bank. Found Tecidos Moura pretty quickly. 5000 points. 4 - No idea whatsoever. Went somewhere in Yukon. 1163 points. 5 - Went for Bulgaria. Completely off xD 593 points Yeah, those last two rounds were rough. 16581 points

I got 21,710 - got the first four rounds dead on (4999 in Belgium, though, which was annoying), but Russia. There’s just too much of it, man. I think I eventually clicked somewhere on the outskirts of Moscow just to get it over with, but I had no idea. Good game! You’ll get 25k one of these days.

As a resident of Madeira, I was kinda happy to see you zoom on it, but what a relief that you finally gave up on that train of thought and went back to Brazil, phew! I was thinking "don't do it, man, don't do it" the whole time.

A tip to distinguish between Ukrainian and Russian: Ukrainian has the letters i, ї, and є (and I mean in cyrillic - if you see a "vein aesthetic clinic", none of those i's matter at all); Russian has э, ъ, and ы, which looks like two letters but is actually one letter (in the scenario that you'll see Ukrainian writing containing ьї - two separate letters btw - you can tell it apart by the dots). Ukrainian is also far more likely to contain the ' symbol inside a word.

Yes, it is very common. The name on the building is Поликлиника (Polyclinic)

first round just guessed paris because of French, had no clue, how the fuck you got that I have no idea second: read .au and saw bunbury and figured it out from there, 5000 points third: saw the brazillian flag down the street and saw Salvador on van, originally thought el Salvador but checked brazil and saw Salvador, guessed round that area and got 4978 4. saw the m and guessed great falls montana, 4292 points. how the fuck you got that is insane 5. stuck it in middle of kazan, Russia and got 2877, got 21938, pretty proud to beat tom with only one perfect score tbh

Salvador is the 4th largest city in Brazil. Seeing the word Salvador along with Portuguese text, the connection should be as immediate as seeing "Manchester" when you're in the UK. I'm glad you finally got it, but if that round were timed you would've been smoked there... BUT THAT MONTANA ROUND!!!! I seriously call hijinks...

I'm kicking myself for giving up on round 1 early. I vaguely remembered Duvel as a Belgian brand and was actually considering Charleroi, but didn't search thoroughly enough and eventually went for Liege. Bummer. I did get Salvador, though, which makes up for most of the disappointment. For me, the standout guess of this round is the one in Missoula. I never would've found that. Absolutely insane.

It's really unfortunate that three years after this got posted the images/places in the challenge are not 100% the same any more and often vital clues are missing or something written is out of focus. Like the picture taken on another day where the car with the citys name on it is missing (3/5).

1- Saw the french writing, didn't know about the beer however I did get Belgian vibes, however i still went France, lol. Went to Lille, so was only 63 miles away, ( how did you find this, so dumb) 4652 points 2- Knew we were in Aussie bc of the website, and driving on the left, but couldn't find 'Bunbury' anywhere. Obvs didn't look hard enough smh. Went in Sydney because of that cool building lol, got 486 points, 50/50 chance of the coasts really! 3- Saw the Spanish/Portuguese writing, and the coast, but nothing else but the 'Salvador' on the van. Might as well go for El Salvador even though I didn't think we were there, what else is there to go by lol. Might as well risk it even though i HIGHLY doubt the google van can even goes there hahaha. Went south of the capital and yeahhhh was 4000 miles off. Did NOT know Salvador was a place in Brazil, 🤷‍♂️ 55 Points! 4- Literally, NO idea here. I'm not good at this, could be america, spain, scandinavia in my head, literally anywhere tbh, had USA vibes so should have with my instinct, just because of the Baseball stadium. Went Spain and got 0 points surprisingly 5- Saw cyrillic writing or whatever its called and didnt want to go Russia, might as well risk it and go somewhere else. No clues as to what city so went near Kiev and got 1.3k points fair to say you beat me tom, you're just fucking dumb good at this, FROM AN 'M'?????????? fuck this game lool

24240 - Kinda wish I'd tried harder on the first round now. 1) I just went for northern France, didn't have a clue. - 4277 2) Easy one. - 5000 3) Searched for agggges. Convinced myself it was central/south America, but Spanish-speaking. Searched the south-east coast of a lot of places. Then remembered there's an area/city called Salvador in Brazil. Took some searching. - 5000 4) Dropped in, thought 'Ooh that looks like Montana'. Span around 'Hey there's that giant M in Missoula' Thanks to a Hank Green video many years ago. - 5000 5) Searched around for a LOT for cities in/around Russia that had trams. Settled on Chelyabinsk because it had the best fit, and loaads of tramways. Then got frustrated and picked somewhere in the north of the city. (Looking at the map afterwards, it's pretty much impossible. The roads are different, and that clinic I kept searching for wasn't there) - 4963

21721 pts. I was quite proud of my rouund and in fact we had similar ones :) 1. 5000. Saw the french writing, the Duvel sign, the run-down buildings, I immediately thought Charleroi or Namur (I am French), found Boulevard Tirou easily from there. 2. 5000. Looked for Bunbury all around the coast... thought just like you at first that it was in Queenland or on the sunshine coast. Took quite some time but easy enough. 3. 5000. Saw "estacione bem" which is portuguese, and Salvador, went for Salvador de bahia and looked for the something-Moura hotel on the south-east coast. 4. 5000. Instantly had that Spokane vibe, but it looked like a smaller town. That with the 'M' that looked like a university logo, I went upstream from Spokane into Montana, stopped at Missoula because it may have been what the M was for and it had mountains all around, and found that perfectly fitting bridge :) 5. 1721. Gutted when there were no real clues to go by... clicked somewhere in the suburbs of Moscow because the tag with "RU" suggested russia at least. Real interesting round altogether !

Having just done the challenge, I'm certain you must have accidentally moved slightly for the Bunbury one. The post office sign is slightly covered from the starting position (which is why I spent an hour scouring through all the Australian towns for correlation), but if I move forward one click, it has the exact view you had
